LETTER FROM THE CHIEF OPERATING OFFICER

The Foundation was founded to provide financial assistance to those in need during a crisis situation. During 2016, the Foundation provided more than $48,000 to assist 21 employees and their families who faced unforeseen challenges like rebuilding their homes after fires and flooding or faced home foreclosure. We feel fortunate that through the Foundation we were able to help employees who unexpectedly found themselves in a crisis.

While the Foundation was formed to provide financial assistance, it has evolved to provide much more. We awarded two scholarships last year through the Jean Srnecz Memorial Scholarship Fund. The Foundation also supports charities and our employees who volunteer by providing matching grants. Grants awarded last year helped raise money and awareness for charities including Hope Cancer Ministries and Food Bank of Northern Nevada. The Foundation also provided school supplies to in-need students, not only helping them prepare for the year but also boosting their self-esteem by showing the students they were worth investing in.

Meals for our neighbors in need, scholarships for students and Christmas gifts for families impacted by a loved one’s battle with cancer. These were among the items that the Baker & Taylor Foundation provided to our employees and communities last year thanks to your generosity.

More than 600 contributors donated $60,530 to the Foundation and scholarship fund in 2016 – an incredible effort. Thank you for your contributions that help our employees and communities. I am proud of your generosity.

GEORGE COE, CHIEF OPERATING OFFICER

REAL PEOPLE, REAL STORIES.Imagine this…

You’re a single mom with three children and you find out you have cancer. You start your treatments but have to stop working due to the effects of the treatments. All this is going on and Christmas is right around the corner and you have no way to purchase presents for your kids. What can you do?

In cooperation with the Baker & Taylor Foundation’s Group Support Program, the Retail Team at the B&T Charlotte location came to the rescue by partnering with Hope Cancer Ministry’s Tree of Hope Event. This involved providing the entire Christmas for the whole family. Toys, clothes, shoes, hats and Christmas dinner for the family were all provided to make this as joyous an occasion as possible given the circumstances.

The mother, Theresa, was blown away by the generosity of the Baker & Taylor Team. Her living room went from empty to overflowing with gifts the week before Christmas. Over 30 Baker & Taylor employees participated in Hope Cancer Ministry events in 2016. In total Hope Cancer Ministries enriched the Christmas of 80 families this year including 78 children.

“I’ve been really impressed with how our employees have rallied around families that are hurting to make a tremendous impact.” said Dan Johnson, Senior Vice President of IT. In addition to the Gifts of Hope event we had a number of employees participate in the annual Bid for Hope Jazz Concert and Silent Auction held at the Ballantyne Hotel. We also had a group that ran in the annual Kate’s Race for Hope 5k. The Baker & Taylor team faired very well with the following awards:

Brad Lucas – 3rd Place Mens Overall

Jennifer Gambrell – 2nd Place Age Group

Matt Johnson (Dan’s Son) – 3rd Place Age Group

Andy Cane – 2nd Place Age Group.

On behalf of the children, families and seniors served by the Food Bank of Northern Nevada, we would like to extend our heartfelt and sincere gratitude and appreciation for your generous support totaling $1,000.00 in 2016.

Your investment in the fight against hunger makes a huge difference in the lives of the people we serve. Because of your generosity and compassion, children’s eyes light up with excitement when they see strawberries come off the truck at Mobile Harvest, families with little to no food budget are able to get the staple food items they need, and struggling veterans no longer need to choose between heating their house and eating because they receive the food they desperately need.

YOU make a significant difference in the lives of our neighbors in need.

We are proud to say that with your partnership in 2016, we provided nearly 13.3 million pounds of food (half of which was nutritious, fresh produce) throughout northern Nevada and the eastern California Sierra through our 140 partner agencies and our own direct service programs, such as Mobile Harvest and Kids Cafe.

Thank you for continuing to support your Food Bank. We hope we can count on your donation again in 2017.

Together we can solve hunger,

Cherie Jamason, President and CEO

Thank you! Words cannot express our gratitude for your generous gift to the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS) Georgia Chapter of $1,500.00 on Nov. 3, 2016. With your ongoing support, we’re able to fund the most promising blood cancer research. Here is some of the progress we’re making together:

• Thanks to supporters like you, LLS is the largest private funder of blood cancer research in the world, having invested more than $1 billion since our founding in 1949.

• We are seeing better outcomes with new treatments like Ibrutinib.

• We’re on the threshold of amazing breakthroughs including matching patients with precise treatments for their leukemia.

• Thanks to LLS co-pay many patients can afford the medications they need.

You’re a vital part of the team, providing the financial fuel that makes progress possible. Together, we are moving the “someday” of finding cures and more effective treatments a lot closer to today. Thank you for helping us save lives.

Gratefully,

Piper Medcalf, Executive Director

I just wanted to thank you and your team for providing school supplies and bookbags for the cookout. It was so wonderful to have that as an incentive. Thank you for your efforts and continued support. We are so grateful!

Sincerely,

Rebekah

A team from our Finance department, along with sponsorship from F3 Foundation, raised funds to purchase book bags and school supplies for the Bull Dogs Matters afterschool program at AG Middle School, sponsored by Cross Roads Corporation. The B&T Foundation provided a matching grant to assist in this project.

IN OUR EIGHTH YEAR AND STILL GROWING...The Baker & Taylor Foundation was founded in 2009 to provide financial assistance to those in need during a crisis situation. Whether it means helping a family recover from a tragedy or supporting employee volunteer initiatives, the nonprofit Baker & Taylor Foundation is committed to assisting our employee base and the local communities we serve.

In addition, we have given 13 college scholarships through the Jean Srnecz Memorial Scholarship Fund to deserving students of Baker & Taylor employees.

The B&T Foundation has one specific goal: to demonstrate our compassion and concern for others through giving to those who need assistance due to a crisis. Examples of situations where the Foundation may provide financial assistance include (but are not limited to): loss of home due to a natural disaster or fire; escalating bills for unexpected illnesses; or unforeseen financial distress due to no fault of your own.

The Baker & Taylor Foundation remains committed to all of our employees. Not just those suffering from personal crisis, but those employees who donate their time for worthy volunteer activities and support other nonprofit organizations. Through the B&T Foundation’s efforts, we have been able to positively impact hundreds of our employees over the past eight years. With your ongoing support, we will continue to support our Mission of providing individuals in crisis with assistance for today and hope for tomorrow.

JEAN SRNECZ SCHOLARSHIP

Jean Srnecz was among the passengers of Continental flight 3407, which crashed Feb. 12, 2009, outside Buffalo, N.Y. Jean, who was traveling to see family, was the senior vice president of merchandising at Baker & Taylor and a long-standing director of the Book Industry Study Group (BISG). Jean spent more than 30 years at Baker & Taylor, serving in a number of key roles. For many in the publishing industry, she was the public face of Baker & Taylor. To many inside Baker & Taylor, she was a respected colleague and dear friend. She believed passionately in contributing to the development of our industry and it was this belief that led her to be active in BISG, the Educational Paperback Association and other industry groups. Jean loved books and learning.

The Baker & Taylor Foundation, a nonprofit organization led by Baker & Taylor, established a college scholarship in Jean’s name to annually support the education of a child of a Baker & Taylor employee. This continues to be a wonderful and meaningful way to honor her memory.

ERIN ANDERSON Daughter of Jan Anderson, Sales Manager

Erin plans to pursue a degree in nursing or sports medicine from Brigham Young University in the fall. Throughout high school, Erin was a competitive cross-country runner. An injury sustained in her junior year piqued her interest in health and medicine. “I developed greater empathy for injured athletes, gratitude for health and awareness in exemplifying team spirit,” noted Erin.

BROOKE GRAVITT Daughter of Tracy Gravitt, Training Manager

Brooke plans to study nursing in the fall at the University of North Georgia. She decided nursing was the career for her after participating in a work-study program in a local emergency room during high school. Brooke explained, “As a nurse I believe that even during those bad times it will be rewarding just knowing I did everything I could to make someone comfortable during their illness.”

SCHOLARSHIP WINNERS

In 2009, The Baker & Taylor Foundation established an annual college scholarship in honor of former colleague, Jean Srnecz, to support the higher education of Baker & Taylor employees’ children. This year, Baker & Taylor is pleased to announce it awarded two college scholarships.

The recipients, Erin Anderson and Brooke Gravitt, each received a $3,000 scholarship. These are the 12th and 13th Jean Srnecz Scholarships given to date.

“Each year it is wonderful to pause and remember Jean by recognizing the children of Baker & Taylor employees who have a desire to learn and grow,” said George Coe, Chief Operating Officer of Baker & Taylor/Follett School Solutions. “Our winners this year represent a spirit and commitment Jean would have admired and we are pleased to award these scholarships to Erin and Brooke.”
