State of Play: Brief highlight on urban environmental data in African cities Experience from AEO 2016
What needs to happen Institutional set-up and capacity Coherence and alignment with SDGs Using tech advances for data
collection and analysis
African Cities face serious environmental risks but there is limited subnational data to inform policy and investment
Many cities will see their urban expansion taking place on the same watersheds used to supply them with fresh water. This may reduce their water provisions. More detailed research is required to further analyze the resulting socio-economic risk.

There have been few economic analyses of mangroves in Africa. Yet in many places they are threatened by infrastructure (e.g. Ports) as well as urban expansion taking place without taking their services in coastal protection into account.
We need to understand how biodiversity and ecosystem service assets fair against development pressures such as agriculture, mining, infrastructure plans, and demographic trends and urbanization
