CONTENTSGIRL UP ANNUAL LEADERSHIP SUMMIT | JULY 2016

2 0 1 6 G I R L U P L E A D E R S H I P S U M M I T 3

This year’s Girl Up Leadership Summit is going to be our biggest yet, and I for one am super excited to share it with all of you. More than 275 passionate girl advocates are attending this year- our biggest turnout ever. We have two jam-packed days of programming, and on Wednesday, Girl Up supporters will be meeting with more Members of Congress than in any year past!

What makes the Leadership Summit unique is that it is the only “by girls, for girls” summit. You’ll be hearing from a number of incredible girls this year- such as Marley Dias, an 11 year old social activist; Abhilasha Damor, a peer educator with UNFPA India; and Girl Up Club Leaders from around the world.

These girl voices are at the heart of Girl Up’s “by girls, for girls” mission. Because who better to help you find your voice and use it to change the world, than girls just like you?

But while inspiration is great, impact is even better. In honor of our 5th Leadership Summit, here is my list of the Top 5 impacts the summit has had over the years:

5. Club Growth - The number of girls who have left the summit inspired to join a Girl Up Club - or start their own- shows just how powerful inspiration can be when it is turned into action.

4. Learning from the Best - Whether it is a UN leader, congressional staffer or a media maven, summit attendees always leave these discussions with new tips and tricks they can implement to strengthen their own advocacy.

3. Making Connections - A Skype conversation with a girl from Ethiopia or hearing directly from a girl advocate in Guatemala, the summit has served as a unique opportunity to learn about life for girls in other countries directly from these girls, without ever stamping a passport.

2. FLOTUS - When First Lady Michelle Obama wants to come speak at your Leadership Summit, you know you are truly making waves! Her participation made it clear that the world is paying attention to what all of you girls do.

1. Girls Count Act - You learned the skills and talking points you needed to advocate to ensure girls everywhere were counted. Then on Lobby Day you stormed Capitol Hill: and the bill became law. I can’t think of a more perfect example of the power of girls!

These are some important impacts, but I know we have even more in store this year! As you get ready to start your 2016 Leadership Summit experience here are some suggestions:

• Listen, take notes and don’t be afraid to ask questions. The speakers and workshop leaders are here so you

can learn from them. Don’t be shy!

• Think big. Throughout the summit, think about how you can take what you’re learning and use it to further your

Girl Up experience. Then when you get back home… do it!

• Stop and take it all in. Seriously, the Leadership Summit is a one-of-a-kind experience. Take selfies, tweet,

snap, scribble in your program. Just make sure you remember the fun.

Well, what are you waiting for? Stop reading this and go enjoy the 2016 Girl Up Leadership Summit!

High five,

Melissa H. Kilby

#ILookLikeAnEngineer - Oceanic Suite A

Girls are rarely encouraged to pursue math and science; in college lecture halls, males vastly outnumber female engineering students. Step into the shoes of one of the few top female engineers in the corporate sector and learn what it’s like for women in the STEAM workforce.

Stacey DelVecchio, Additive Manufacturing Chief Engineer, Caterpillar, Inc.

Grace Wong and Imani Brooks, Teen Advisors, Girl Up

Declare Your Ambition: Why We Need More Women in Office and How to Get There

In this workshop, we’ll use the banana as a canvas for creativity and re-imagine what it means to eat. Part cooking class, part art studio, together we’ll learn how to use food as a material for self-expression and transform everyday life into a buffet of invention!

Emilie Baltz, Food Artist & Designer, School of Doodle
