quotes from american girlsWhen the Girl Up campaign went out to talk with American girls ages 10-18, here are someof the things they had to say about what they think of their sisters in other countries:

While sisters in other countries might marry earlier, have no access to healthcare orfresh water and have higher rates of homelessness, we are still very similar.Ami, 10th grade

Girls in the United States have a lot going on. But at the same time, we are eating ameal every night. If you think about it, some girls would like to trade places in order to

have a roof over their heads. Natasha, 6th gradeIt makes me feel important because we can make a difference in the lives of girlsfrom developing countries. It makes me feel liketogetherwe can change theworld. Jacinta, 8th grade

e u t utu .Its easy to get overwhelmed by classes, homework and after-school activities. Goingto school can sometimes feel like a chore. But, not all girls have the chance to go toschool. And in many countries, more than halfof girls must drop out to take care of householdobligations before they get to the 6th grade.

a t t v t v .In developing countries, girls often cannot afford visits to see adoctor or need to travel long distances to reach a clinic. As a result, health problemsget worse and their lives are at risk.

k u .Girls, living in poverty, in many developing countries often face wide-spread violence.

eeping them safe from harm is a major concern. Girls start working and doingchores at a young age to help support their families. In some areas of the world, girlstravel up to 15 hours each day getting water from far and distant locations and do nothave the shelter of their homes or school to keep them safe.

g t xt t .While its not always easy to speak up and stand out, in the United States you haveequal rights and can do so when you are ready. In many developing countries girlsare not valued and not treated equally. However, if given support, opportunitiesand resources, girls can make a positive impact on the lives of their family, theircommunity and our world.

g u t.A few major milestones for girls in the United States include receiving a birthcerti cate and drivers license or a state issued identi cationor I card at sixteen. In many developing countries, girls do not have birth certi cates to mark their birth oridenti cation cards to prove their age. This means that in the eyes of their governments, they do not exist, cannot be protected and are not eligible to receive services.

ATS AN H NS. For many families, a goator pair of hens is a valuable source of food andincome. Goats milk and eggs can be eaten at home orsold at market. $5 can go toward the purchase of goats andhens that will allow families to keep their daughters from needing to work and help

them stay in school.$5 c h k g h t sC AN WAT . In Ethiopia, at least 80 percent of girls above the age of 15 are involvedin fetching water. Women and girls often spend time caring for children and otherhousehold members who fall sick from diseases related to poor water quality. $5 helpsbuild water wells in local communities that bring clean water closer to home.

UTIN ICA CH C -UP. In Guatemala, it is often dif cult for girls in rural areasto travel to or afford a routine visit to a doctor. $5 can help more girls get a check-upfrom a professional medical provider and learn about nutrition and health basics whenthey turn 12 years old.

    $5 c h g b m lI C NT S. Girl centers and girls clubs provide a safe place in communities for

girls to come together, meet with female mentors and learn important life, leadershipand job skills. $5 can help support girl centers in more communities.

An awareness campaign is a thoughtful andplanned effort to let others know aboutsomething of interest or concern. Its through theuse of media and the sharing of information thatthe public learns about an issue. For example, you have seen and heard ads about how smokingis not good for your health or about the importanceof using seatbelts or wearing helmets.

preparing your messageLaShana used her poem to help deliver her message. Other creative ways toget the word out are through stories, songs, dance, artwork, playsor justwriting it out simply in an easy-to-remember waylike Give High FivesGirlUp. (These short types of messages can be called slogans.)

For a slogan, think about a message that could t on a wristband or a pin!ont forget that products like t-shirts, tote bags and water bottles are great

ways to both spread your message and give you something to sell. You can getsuch items from Girl Up and sell or raf e them for a pro t. Check out the coolstuff at GirlUp.org.

    > Use a clear and aTTenTion grabbing headlineInstead of Holding a Girl Up Fundraising Event, try Uniting Girls to Change the World.

    > inTrodUcTory paragraphUse the Five Ws of Who, What, When, Where and Why. Tell the most importantinformation and make an interesting statement to get the reader to want to readmore.

    > ne T 1-2 paragraphsWrite more information and include quotes from yourself (remember to write in thethird person) and from other people involved with the event or cause. Write themost important information and quotes rst.

Answer these questions and youll have your story to share. (You can send it to the Girl UpWeb site at GirlUp.org or to [email protected].)

h :Have a friend be the interviewer and record you giving your responses. You might even post the interview on the Web, on the Girl Up blog, or your Facebook page.
