Welcome to ABJ2016 E3!
EXPLORE EMPOWER ENGAGE It is with great pleasure we welcome you to beautiful Seattle for the 2016 Society of Women Engineers ABJ2016 Region Conference. Pacific Northwest Section, Region A – Golden West Region, Region B – Sonora Region and Region J Northwest Star jointly present E3, EXPLORE, EMPOWER ENGAGE. We have a great conference planned for you with various tours of the city, breakout sessions and career fair. We are thrilled to host over 800 engineers for this conference. It is an amazing turn out from our western regions and welcome guests from across the country. We hope you enjoy what we have planned for you!
We kick the weekend off Friday evening with our opening reception and for those brave enough, a tour of the Seattle underground. On Saturday, there are over 50 presentations, panels and poster sessions to choose from and many companies and exhibitors to visit in our all day career fair. This weekend, we want you to EXPLORE the many wonders of the world through the eyes of your peers, EMPOWER you and the people around you to reach for the stars, and ENGAGE yourself in being the best person you know you are.
We have three dynamite keynote speakers you will not want to miss. Penny Wirsing, Director of Strategic Initiatives, Society of Women Engineers, will speak at breakfast. Deb Limb, Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer, CRISTA Ministries, will address us at lunch and Karen Bradford, Chief of Staff for the Office of the Director at NASA Ames Research Center, will wrap-up a very full day at the dinner and region awards banquet. For anyone new to SWE, be sure to check out the SWE town hall meeting to have your SWE questions answered then join your region meeting on Sunday to engage and become involved or observe and learn. There is something for everyone.
If you were fortunate to arrive a few days early or plan to stay a day or two following the conference, we hope you will have had a chance to participate in ABJ2016 tours or find the time to explore Seattle before you head home. Seattle is an eclectic community with open-air markets, a giant ferris wheel, museums, ferry rides, shopping, wineries, distilleries, theatre, and much, much more. Another great opportunity we have for you is to join the Pacific Northwest Section outreach program for middle school girls scheduled Sunday afternoon following the region meetings as a volunteer. Perhaps you will be the catalyst to empower these young girls in their exploration of engineering through your engagement with them.
Whether you came to EXPLORE your life's opportunities, EMPOWER yourself through knowledge or ENGAGE with newfound friends, ABJ2016 E3 has something for you! From all of us on the planning team and all the volunteers, we wish you a wonderful conference experience and a fabulous stay in Seattle!

Greetings SWE Members, Guests, and Sponsors, We’d like to personally welcome each and every one of you to the 2016 Joint Regions Conference and Career Fair in Seattle, Washington! On behalf of the Goldenwest Region (Region A), the Northwest Star Region (Region J), and the Sonora Region (Region B), thank you for joining us for an outstanding weekend of networking, professional development, and personal growth. We are very excited to host you this weekend and hope you enjoy the fantastic keynote speakers, exciting tours, and inspiring breakout sessions that the conference planning committee have lined up. We hope your experience at our conference will encourage you in your career or studies, as well as within SWE. Take this opportunity to explore the world of engineering and expand your knowledge of it through our conference programming. Support and empower the next generation of scientists and engineers by participating in our Sunday afternoon outreach event, and help us celebrate and empower each other as we recognize each region’s awards recipients. Remember to engage as you meet new people from outside your university, your company, and your home region. We would like to extend our thanks to the members of the Joint Regions Conference planning team and to the Pacific Northwest Section for their dedication to bringing this event to life. Without the time and energy that these individuals contributed, this conference would not have been possible. As you meet them and the rest of the volunteers this weekend, please join us and extend your thanks. The weekend schedule is quite full and we’d like to give you an idea of what you can look forward to over the next few days. After fantastic technical and local area tours Thursday and Friday, we are officially starting the conference with an Opening Reception at the Marriott. Join us for networking fun and delicious hors d'oeuvres! Saturday begins with our State of SWE Keynote breakfast, followed by more than 50 sessions throughout the day on topics varying from technical to professional development to SWE development, and outreach. Don’t miss our second keynote, Deborah Limb, at lunch! Additionally, a career fair will take place throughout the day. The career fair is open to both students and professionals. No matter what your current place is in the engineering industry, you can always benefit from stopping by the company booths, learning about what they have to offer, and expanding your network. Please extend your thanks to all of our wonderful sponsors for their support of the Society of Women Engineers. Their continued support of SWE’s mission allows us to continually advance. Saturday will finish with our final keynote address, given by Karen Bradford, the Chief of Staff of the NASA Ames Research Center, and the presentation of awards for all three regions. As the conference winds down on Sunday, don’t forget to participate in your Region Council meetings in the morning and the fantastic Outreach event that is planned in the afternoon! We’d like to thank you for joining us and bringing your energy, excitement, and expertise to the conference. We look forward to meeting many of you this weekend and working with you going forward. Thank you again for your continued support of SWE. Enjoy the conference and the beautiful city of Seattle! Sincerely,
Brittney Elko Rachel Morford Wendy Jenkins Goldenwest Region Governor Sonora Region Governor Northwest Star Region Governor

Penny Wirsing has held management positions within
ExxonMobil for more than 20 years, leading diverse groups in
areas ranging from program management and budgeting to
environmental compliance. She is currently an environmental
manager at the Torrance Refinery near Los Angeles.
She has been actively involved with SWE, holding numerous
positions at the section, region, and Society levels since joining
more than 25 years ago. Penny chaired the conference
programming board from FY05 through FY09, spearheading
some of the strategic changes that took the conference from
an attendance of 3,200 to nearly 6,000 over that time. She was
an inaugural member of the senate, led the senate’s contingency
reserve task force in FY10 and the reserve task force the
following year; and served as chair of the finance committee in
FY12. As Society treasurer in FY13-14, she was instrumental
in streamlining the financial reporting and developing a three-
year budget to align with SWE’s strategic plan. A senior life
member, Penny was named a SWE Fellow in 2007.
Penny earned a civil engineering degree from Michigan State
University and an MBA from the University of Washington. She
is active in her community and chairs the board of directors for a

Dinner Keynote Presentation Explore---Where? Engage—Who? Empower—How? Let’s Discuss!!!!
Saturday, February 20th, 6:00 pm
Karen Bradford
Chief of Staff for the Office of the Center Director at NASA Ames Research Center
Karen Bradford has been a civil servant for over 20 years.
According to Karen, "NASA is not just about Ames, or America.
It's about taking everyone on the next step in exploration and
discovery. To be even a small part of this human story is
phenomenal." As a member of the Center's executive team,
she is responsible for coordinating the many tasks of the
Center Director's office. She joined Ames in October 2000,
when her husband retired from the military and she was
transferred from the Navy Public Works Center in Pearl Harbor,
HI. As a wife who has moved often during her husband's
military career, she always found "starting over" to be a
challenge, moving from one duty station to the next meant she
would have to prove herself all over again. One day she
realized that all that moving is why she knows the travel rules
for moving troops around the world. Her military-life
experiences have given her a diverse set of skills that she has
used in a variety of ways.
