EXPLORE GJÓGV THE ROMANTIC VILLAGE IN EYSTUROY

The village Gjógv is nestled on the outermost north-east-ern tip of Eysturoy, the second largest island in the Faroes.

On our way East we will go for a walk on the bridge connecting the islands Streymoy and Eysturoy, pass the imposing summits of Slættaratindur (882 metres) and Gráfelli (857 metres), the tallest mountains in the archi-pelago, located between the villages of Eiði and Gjógv.

Gjógv is best known for its picturesque scenery dotted with multi-coloured old house built around its vital natural harbour, which lies protected in the gorge that has given the village its name, Gjógv means gorge in Faroese. It is a fitting name; the harbour carved by the sea was the village’s lifeline before the arrival of modern roads.

This is a very small village – approx. 30 people live in Gjógv nowadays, but it attracts many visitors, both for-eigners and locals, who are seduced by its romantic tranquillity. Gjógv is the perfect spot for a leisurly stroll, and we will explore the little village before heading to its charming guesthouse, Gjáargarður, for lunch.

Every Sunday in the period 12.06-21.08 Approx. 5 hours. Included: Bus trip with guide and lunch at Guesthouse Gjáar-garður. Pick up: Hotel Føroyar, Oyggjar- vegur, Tórshavn at 8:50 and Tórshavn Bus terminal at 9:00.

KIRKJUBØUR IS THE HISTORICAL HEART OF THE FAROES.

The little village is located on the south west coast of Strey-moy and offers a stunning view of the islands Hestur and Koltur. In the Middle Ages it was the Faroese Episcopal See, which made it the country’s spiritual and cultural hub.

On this unique excursion we will drive through Tórs- havn, quite possibly the world’s smallest capi-tal, and then up across beautiful mountains, past the village Velbastaður clinging to the steep slopes.

The bus trip will be both scenic and informative. We will visit the enigmatic Magnus Cathedral, built around the year 1300 by Bishop Erlendur, the St. Olaf’s Church and the Kirkjuböargarður estate farmhouse (Roykstovan), a stave house dating back to the turn of the first millenni-um, said to be the world’s oldest inhabited wooden house. To round off the visit, there will be hot drinks and pastries in the atmospheric Roykstovan.

Included in this bus tour is also a guided walk in the old part of Tórshavn.

SCENIC AND HISTORICAL TOUR ON STREYMOY AND EYSTUROY

This tour starts in Tórshavn and heads out along the beautiful mountain road above Tórshavn called Oyggjarvegurin, literally the ‘Island Road,’ and over the Norðradalsskarð mountain pass, from where you can see the islands of Koltur and Hestur. Then we continue to Kollafjørður, which is the longest village in the Faroe Island and is located on Streymoy’s east cost. ‘Fjørður’ means fiord or inlet in Faroese and the village Kol-lafjørður contours the fiord, so it stretches along nearly 10 kilometres, in spite of its small size. The characteris-tic parish church in Kollafjørður dates from 1837.

The tour continues over the bridge that connects Streym-oy and Eysturoy, which is, in fact, the only bridge across the North Atlantic. After crossing we drive past a few small villages on our way to Søldarfjørður, were we will stop for hot drinks and pastries at the cosy 19th century country home “Garðahúsið”. The Village Søldarfjørður is part of a chain of villages stretching along the entire east side of the Skálafjørður inlet on Eysturoy. This tour is both scenic and historical.

Every Wednesday 15.06-24.08 2016

Approx. 5 hours.

Included: Bus trip with guide and hot drinks and pastries at the atmospher-ic Garðahúsið in Søldarfjørður.

EXPLORE SAKSUN THE VILLAGE AT THE BOTTOM OF AN INLET

This tour to Saksun starts in Tórshavn. Saksun is a pic-turesque village at the bottom of what was once an inlet surrounded by steep mountains. The inlet formed a deep tranquil natural harbour. However, a storm blocked it with sand and created the lake you will see below the village instead of the old inlet. You will visit the farm Dúvugarður, which predates the 17th century and offers a glimpse of how the Faroese lived in the old days. Before leaving you will also see the Saksun church built in 1858.

Our next stop will be Hvalvík village. The name means ‘whale bay’ and is located in a valley on Streymoy’s east coast, near another village called Streymnes. You will have a chance to see Hvalvík church, which is the oldest in the Faroe Islands. And we will look out to sea, only 10-20 meters off the shores of Hvalvík you will spot the wreck of an old wooden ship.

On the way back, we will take the high mountain road Oyggjarvegurin for incomparable views.

Every Friday in the period 17.06-26.08

Approx. 4 hours.Deadline for booking: Thursday at 09:00. Included: Bus trip with guide, a visit to Dúvugarður and a sandwich to be enjoyed at Saksun.
