PRESIDENT’S REPORT

WARA

Dene LawrenceCity of South Perth

On behalf of the WA Rangers Association, I am very pleased to welcome everyone to our 2016 Professional Development Conference. This includes all our delegates, sponsors and guests.

It has been another busy year for the WARA Committee. I would sincerely like to thank the Committee and Life Members for their dedication, and commitment to WARA. The achievements by our association over the last year have been significant, but I am looking forward to what 2017 will bring. I would like to congratulate everyone’s efforts and thank everyone that has helped out and supported WARA over the last year and thank all members for their ongoing support.

I would like to thank Dave White, Dee Rohan, Sharna Merritt, Matt Bowen and the rest of the committee for all their hard work and dedication over the last year and especially with the planning for the conference.

I’m also proud to showcase the Associations newsletter, which is being sent out to all local government Ranger departments within Western Australia. I hope that you not only gain valuable insights from the newsletters content, but I invite all Rangers in WA to use this newsletter as a forum to share the vast levels of industry experience which this great state contains. I would like to thank Michal Lowenhoff for all his hard work with the publications. To make your contribution or submit your suggestions for ongoing publications, please email the Association at: [email protected] – We need your help to continue to grow with the newsletter.

The efforts achieved by the committee have helped WARA to continue to be recognised as the peak Local Government Ranger Services industry body across Australia and overseas. This is often displayed through the requests received by WARA for advice, opinions and guidance from members, government departments, media and the public. Whenever an opportunity arises through the media or corresponding with state government, the Committee will endeavour to voice the opinion of WARA members on relevant issues. I would also like to welcome the new members that have joined WARA recently. I believe they will benefit greatly from the support network that WARA has created and I encourage all members to consider nominating for a position on the general or a zone committee. It is very rewarding to work with people that are enthusiastic and a make a contribution towards the development of Local Government Ranger Services in Western Australia. New people joining the committee will help the current generation of members continue to build on what the founding members of WARA set out to achieve. Dene LawrencePresident

RANGER & RANGER TEAM OF THE YEAR AWARDSThe Ranger and Ranger Team of the year awards have been created to acknowledge exemplary work conducted within our industry. Although not well known externally, performing the duties of a Ranger in any jurisdiction requires a broad skill set, community focus, passion and a willingness to serve others for the greater good. It is because of this unique role and the wide range of skills required to perform in often unfavourable conditions, that the Association wish to recognise one person and one team each year who have been show to provide the highest standard of service to their community as seen by their peers.

2015 RANGER OF THE YEARThe West Australian Rangers Association would like congratulate to the 2015 Ranger of the year; Craig Walker, Shire of Halls Creek

Big congratulations to Craig Walker from the Shire of Halls Creek who won this presti-gious award. Craig has been employed with the Shire of Halls Creek for the past four years. During that time he has remained an asset to the Shire, commencing in the role of Ranger and later advancing to Senior Ranger.

Craig was nominated by his CEO Rodger Kerr-Newell who is very proud of all Craig has achieved for the Shire of Halls Creek and is very grateful to have him as part of the team. The below is some comments taken from Craig’s nomination from CEO Rodger Kerr-Newell; Craig is often known to go beyond his core duties to assist locals in his own time. Craig has stepped up and taken a lead in bush fire control for the region and also arranges and completes mosquito fogging within the Shire. Craig has also been involved with the recent dog de-sexing program and assisted with the running of a volunteer led Dog show during NAIDOC which he used the opportunity to promote dog health. Craig is a strong character within the Shire of Halls Creek and retains the respect of his colleagues and community members alike.

On behalf of WARA, Congratulations again Craig!

Also congratulations to the other finalists;• Antonia Tardivel-Jones from the City of Joondalup &• Debbie Papps from the Shire of Toodyay

2015 RANGER TEAM OF THE YEAR A congratulations goes out to the Town of Bassendean Rangers for taking out the 2015 Ranger Team of the Year award. The team consists of Sharna Merritt, Mark Bettridge, Carol Grazier and Matt Bowen.

The Town of Bassendean were nominated by their CEO; Robert Jarvis and the Director Operational Services; Simon Stewert-Dawkins for exceptional level of service. The Towns application was also endorsed by the Officer in Charge at Kiara Police Station who is always impressed with their personal levels of commitment to the community of Bassendean along with the collective willingness to provide assistance to his officers. The Towns Rangers have worked hard to improve the image and reputation of Rangers in general. The Town regularly receives compliments, encouragement and positive feedback relating to the Rangers and the service they provide.

On behalf of WARA, Congratulations again to the Town of Bassendean!

Also congratulations to the Shire of Wyndham East Kimberley for being a finalist.

Is your income protected? Most people insure their car and house but many forget to insure their greatest asset - their income.

Consider your current lifestyle and how this would change if you no longer had an income.

Over 60%1 of Australians will be disabled for more than one month during their working life. Income Protection cover protects you in these circumstances by providing an income if you are unable to work temporarily or permanently through illness, injury or accident.
