2 | YMCA OF DELAWARE 2016 IMPACT REPORT • WWW.YMCADE.ORG
Dear Friends,
At the Y, strengthening community is our cause. Through our focus on youth development, healthy living and social responsibility, we embrace and nurture the promise that lies in all of us. The Y gives children, families and individuals the support and resources they need to be more healthy, confident, connected and secure.
In 2016, we hit several significant milestones in our work: • A new YMCA site opened in the Middletown Community on January 1st.
• The Brandywine Y expansion project was approved and will break ground in May.
• We deepened our commitment to reducing the achievement gap through strategic partnerships.
• Critical initiatives including Take on Summer for teens and Harnessing Inclusion were scaled to multiple Y locations across the state.
Each year, more than 100,000 people of all ages and from all walks of life, turn to one of our nine locations in the state of Delaware for programs that nurture the potential of children and teens, improve health and well-being and empower people to give back and support neighbors. Our child care, leadership, athletic and camp programs give kids safe places to help them realize who they are and what they can achieve. Our fitness, sports, recreation and enrichment programs improve health and well-being. Our social services, volunteerism, giving and advocacy programs enable people to develop the skills, abilities and mindsets they need to live their best lives.
As a nonprofit organization, this is our commitment and we count on the generosity of our members and partners to help us continue our vital work.
Yours in service,
Jack Beeson, Board Chairman
Deborah Bagatta-Bowles, Chief Executive Officer

OUR MISSIONThe YMCA of Delaware is an association of people of all ages, ethnic groups and religious affiliations that strives to cultivate the human potential, self-esteem, and dignity of all people. Our organization exists to develop and practice the Christian principles of love, caring, inclusiveness, justice and peace... and to enrich the emotional, physical and social life of all individuals, families and our community.

The Y believes that all children deserve the opportunity to discover who they are and what they can achieve. Our Youth Development programs are designed to nurture the potential of future generations by cultivating values, skills, and relationships. At the Y, our children have the chance to flourish in programs which provide opportunities for self-expression, socialization, and continuous learning - all leading to positive behaviors, better health and educational achievement. In 2016, we served more than 30,000 children and teens from across the state.
YOUTH DEVELOPMENT
NURTURING THE POTENTIAL OF EVERY CHILD AND TEEN
NARROWING THE ACHIEVEMENT GAP In an effort to combat the Achievement Gap, the YMCA of Delaware ensures all children, regardless of their ability to pay, have access to quality after school care and summer day camp programs. By hosting after school “school-based” programs and after school “center-based” programs at many of our facilities, the Y of Delaware is able to provide homework help and academic enrichment including daily literacy and math education as well as natural science exploration.
YMCA summer camps ensure educational opportunities are available to campers year round. Through the Y’s partnership with the Summer Learning Collaborative and Reading is Fundamental Program, we have seen significant gains in campers’ learning and reading retention at our Walnut Street YMCA. In addition, the Bear-Glasgow Y started a camp library in collaboration with their spring scholastic book fair. The Western Y hosted a Summer Learning Loss Prevention Camp, and the Sussex Y offered a Summer Reading Program to all campers which provided 135 minutes of assigned reading time each week.
SUMMER CAMP - A SAFE PLACE TO LEARN, GROW AND THRIVE Overnight, day or specialty camps at the Y share one thing - they are about discovery. Kids have the opportunity to explore nature, find new talents, try new activities, gain independence, and make lasting friendships and memories. In 2016, our camps continued to bustle with different activities as we served more than 5,000 youth. Highlights included: installing “Wet Willie” - the 150 foot long water slide at Camp Tockwogh, implementing additional activities like a new archery program at our Dover branch, exposing more children to camp by allowing older campers to bring a “Friday Guest” to the Brandywine Y’s Hanby Outdoor Center, and providing 1 in 3 campers with financial assistance to attend Summer Camp.
BUILDING FUTURE LEADERS Through various YMCA of Delaware youth initiatives including Black Achievers, Youth in Government, Teen Leaders Clubs, Counselors in Training, camp and summer leadership programs, thousands of youth were empowered to strive for greatness. For example, in 2016, we saw growth in our Youth and Government program; participation increased for our Model Legislative and Judicial Conference from 145 delegates in 2015 to 171 delegates in 2016 which marks the largest Delaware Youth in Government Conference to date. Additionally, our student delegates attended six separate national and local YMCA conferences in 2016. The Black Achievers Program continued its 28th year of helping teens graduate from high school and attend college. Students met weekly for various activities including SAT prep, mentoring opportunities and multi-state college tours.
As a young teenager, Nicole Kennedy was painfully shy. She suffered from anxiety in social situations which stopped her from doing a lot of the things that she wanted to do. In sixth grade, Nicole found the YMCA’s Youth in Government (YIG), a mock-legislative program that helps teens develop confidence, practice leadership and learn civic responsibility. Thanks to a scholarship through the Y’s financial assistance program, Nicole was able to join Youth In Government. She quickly started to gain confidence in herself and began to grow as a person and student. Nicole is no longer the timid teenager afraid to speak in public. She now enjoys leading delegations of her peers and discussing policies that could one day shape Delaware’s future.
NICOLE
I am now more empowered than ever to share my ideas. Because of Youth in Government, I found my voice. ”

The YMCA of Delaware is the largest nonprofit provider of healthy living programs in the state, supporting families and individuals of all shapes, sizes, ages and abilities in their goals of living a healthy life. Our evidence-based programs, including Diabetes Prevention and Healthy Weight and Your Child, utilize best practices and work to prevent chronic diseases. Each branch of the YMCA serves a unique group of members from their respective communities and intentionally reduces barriers to access by providing financial assistance to those who qualify.
HEALTHY LIVING
IMPROVING THE HEALTH AND WELL-BEING OF OUR STATE
DIABETES PREVENTION PROGRAM - FIGHTING CHRONIC DISEASE Our evidence-based Diabetes Prevention Program continues to be recognized nationally as a leader in helping those at high risk adopt a healthy lifestyle while reducing their chances of developing type 2 diabetes. In 2016, our Diabetes Prevention coaches hosted 27 classes and supported 220 individuals on their journey to reduce body weight, increase physical activity and adopt healthier eating habits.
HEALTHY WEIGHT AND YOUR CHILD - PREVENTING CHILDHOOD OBESITY The YMCA of Delaware continues to play a key role in the fight against childhood obesity. This epidemic puts youth at a greater risk for bone and joint problems, sleep apnea, and social and psychological problems such as stigmatization and poor self-esteem. Healthy Weight and Your Child is a 12-month evidence-based program that empowers 7 – 13 year olds, with the support of their families, to reach a healthy weight and live a healthier lifestyle. In 2016, 35 families successfully completed this program.
A HEALTHY HABIT Over the course of the year, we continued to provide more exercise options, classes and trainings for members of all ages. Some of the new classes offered included: Aerial Yoga, Chair YOGA, Heated Yoga, Family Yoga, Kids Cardio Fitness, Aqua Boot Camp, Aqua “Back At It”, and POUND. We added new fitness equipment including spin bikes and we installed “The Queenax” multi-functional training equipment for small group classes.
We continued to expand The Y for All – Harnessing Inclusion Program by installing adaptive fitness equipment in another branch. In addition to the Bear-Glasgow Y, the suspension system is now installed over treadmills at the Dover Y as well as in the movement studio. We continue to focus on welcoming persons with disabilities into a community fitness setting, and through our partnerships with EPIC and the University of Delaware, we were able to serve more than 30 individuals who have disabilities.

The Healthy Weight and Your Child program has had many success stories including Chanel, 13 years old, and her mother Kisha, from Bear, Delaware. Together, Chanel and Kisha have worked to lead a healthier life and lose weight.
Chanel said, “The YMCA program really challenged us to see what foods we had in our home. In the morning we make it a priority to wake up and eat a healthy breakfast, and we have learned how to prepare a meal plan for lunch and dinner. Over time and by making changes in our physical activity, we have really noticed a big difference in our energy overall.”
Chanel’s mother, Kisha said, “When we go places or eat out, she holds me accountable now.”
Thanks to their dedication and the Healthy Weight and Your Child program, Chanel and Kisha are living healthier lives.

The YMCA of Delaware is an inclusive organization open to all. The Y believes that in a diverse world we are stronger when we are inclusive, when our doors are open to all, and when everyone has the opportunity to learn, grow, and thrive. The Y focuses on volunteerism, advocacy, and social services to do our part in strengthening our communities. With our Open Doors Financial Assistance Program, we enable every child, family, and individual to become a member of the Y or participate in our programs.
SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY
GIVING BACK AND PROVIDING SUPPORT TO OUR NEIGHBORS
OPEN DOORS - PROVIDING OPPORTUNITY Our Open Doors Financial Assistance program provided more than $5.2 million in financial assistance to children, youth, adults, seniors and families in our communities so anyone can participate in Y programs or receive the benefits of a membership regardless of their ability to pay. These individuals would not have the opportunity to experience the Y without the support from donors who make it possible through our Annual Campaign.
WATER WISE - SAVING LIVES ONE SWIM LESSON AT A TIME The YMCA of Delaware’s Water Wise program started in 2008 as a way to help young people in Wilmington learn about water safety. Since that time, the program has expanded to not only include safety around water education, but also swim lessons that run year-round for students at several schools throughout the state. Over the last few years, the program has continued to grow and 2016 was another impactful year with more than 2,400 youth served.
BACK ON TRACK - PROVIDING SECOND CHANCES In cooperation with the Delaware Division of Youth Rehabilitative Services, our Back on Track program continues to serve youth adjudicated to Level II probation. Over the last year, we have successfully helped get 278 youth back on track. Participants organized and attended suicide prevention training and completed 50 community service projects last year, including helping the Food Bank of Delaware and the Southbridge Summer Neighborhood Program.
HOUSING - CREATING PATHS TO SELF-SUFFICIENCY Our Central Y’s resident’s program continues to offer housing to men 18 years of age and older. Through partnerships and grants, we are able to provide housing for 300 men who are in transition, are low wage workers and/or are veterans. In fact, the Central Y is the largest provider of housing for veterans in the State of Delaware.

Ronnie served in the Marines for 16 years with four active service tours in Iraq and Afghanistan. Fighting on the front lines, he laid his life on the line while disabling explosive devices in active war zones. Ronnie lost close friends, witnessed tragedies, and struggled to stay close with his loved ones while fighting for our country’s freedom.
When Ronnie retired from the military, he returned home to Dover to build a better life with his family. His time abroad was not easy; his relationship with his wife had become strained and the country he had defended had changed over the 16 years he spent overseas.
Ronnie and his wife joined the Y to get their daughters involved in swim team, and they discovered a place where the whole family could connect and learn to lead healthier lives.
As a recipient of financial assistance, a part of the Y’s commitment to our armed forces, Ronnie and his family now use the Y regularly.
RONNIE
The YMCA helped bring me and my family closer together - it saved my family. ”
