Enrollment is open to international graduate students, international research students, special research students and special auditors at Osaka University.(※Students who enroll in JA classes cannot take this course.)You can select from classes that fit your personal needs and Japanese proficiency.However, you can only choose one level. You cannot register classes that extend over two levels.Classes are non-credit.In cases in which the number of students wishing to take the class is greater than the class capacity, students will be prioritized as given below. Registration Procedure3“Choose a level by checking your Japanese”1

Access CIEE website (http://ciee.osaka-u.ac.jp) to

find “Japanese Level check” banner and click it.

Read the Notes on the first page of the Level Check

and click “Read me” on the bottom of the page.

Read carefully “Osaka University International Student Center

International Student Japanese Language Program Guidelines”

and click “Accept”.

Click “Start”.

Read carefully “Process for Japanese Proficiency Level” and

click “Go to the next page”.

Click the name of the levels to open the descriptions of the

levels. Read them carefully and select one level

to give yourself a try.

If you think the level fits you after reading the level

description, proceed to the questions starting from the

next page.

When you complete answering all the questions asked,

proceed to the result page to find whether the level is suitable

for you.

If the notes on the results page recommend you to take the

current level, type in your name and student ID in the boxes

below and click the “print” button to download a PDF file

including the results with your name and student ID.

Print out the PDF.

Bring the hard copy of the PDF file to the first class.

Attend the first Japanese class to decide your class3① After you have chosen classes check the time and venue of the classes on the timetable on the

CIEE website.

Registration on KOAN website4①

Access“KOAN” portal website (https://koan.osaka-u.ac.jp/).

Log in with your Osaka University Personal ID, not a

student ID, and password which are supposed to be

provided by the Osaka University.

Access KOAN user manual page

(https://koan.osaka-u.ac.jp/portal/manual/student/man/j/

g-kidou.htm) to learn how to use it.

Click “home” button to check whether the registration

procedures are successful. If you find the name of the

class in your timetable on the home page, it means that

the procedure have completed successful.

Choose (supposed) classes by reading syllabus2①②③④

Find the “syllabus” banner on the CIEE website and click it.

Select the level you have been recommended.

Read the syllabus of classes which you are interested in.

You can only choose the classes from the level which are recommended to you by the level

check result.

※Note that you can take only one level at a time. Follow the recommendation of the Japanese Level Check. If you register the classes in different levels they are both rejected.

※Note that this registration procedure is preliminary. You may not be accepted depending on the number of students enrolled.

※If you do not know your Osaka University Personal ID, please contact your department office.

※If you are a total beginner you do not have to take the check. You are supposed to take level 100 classes. Proceed to 3.

※Try one other level by clicking the button on the right hand of the notes on the results page if they suggest you to.

Attendance is an important factor in any of the classes, and attending classesthroughout the semester is a prerequisite. All classes require that students prepare for classes and review class material.Some classes require students to take short tests, quizzes, or give presentations.During the first class, guidance will be provided concerning such matters as the classcontent and grading. It is important that students attend this first class and make afinal decision as to whether or not to enroll.If for some unavoidable reason you have to drop the course during the semester,please contact the following email address: [email protected] must attend both sessions for classes that meet twice a week (JB).

One should register through the KOAN homepage.Students learn academic Japanese with which they conduct their research in the graduate schools.Classes are held at Suita Campus during 4th (14:40-16:10) or 5th period (16:20-17:50).You may earn two credits for attaining the prescribed grade in each subject per semester and these credits are included in the “Advanced Education in the Liberal Arts”.The level of Japanese proficiency is correspondent to Level 600 and 700 with our Japanese Proficiency Level Check.

Intensive Japanese Language Course (IJLC) ★

General Description

This course is intended for Graduate Students and Japanese Government (MEXT) Scholarship Students (international research students) who are planning to continue their education on to graduate school, and allows them to intensively learn Japanese necessary for research activities. Graduate students and research students at Osaka University may also apply. All applicants are considered on a space-available basis.Short-term Exchange Students are not able to apply for this program.

Level2The level of Japanese of this course ranges from Introductory to Intermediate (100 – 300). Before you apply, access the homepage of the Center for International Education and Exchange (http://ciee.osaka-u.ac.jp) and conduct the Japanese Proficiency Level Check. Students who take the course will be divided into three classes according to their level of Japanese based on their preliminary interview and placement test. Classes have lessons intensively every day, and therefore participants will not be able to take part in the seminars of their research laboratories throughout the day on weekdays.

In order to attend the course, you must apply in-advance. Specific application processes and deadlines differ for each faculty, therefore we advice you to contact the international student administrator in your faculty for details.
