Week of September 3, 2017
SUNDAY ADULT CLASSES (9:15-10:15 A.M.)
REJOICE IN THE LORD: PAUL’S LETTER TO THE PHILIPPIANS led by Pastor Heckert in the
cafeteria. This week join us for Study Five - Rejoice in the Lord Always (4:2-23). Philippians is called
The Epistle of Joy. Paul’s obvious joy as he thought of and wrote to his friends there is part of it - but
his classic encouragement to rejoice in the Lord always in this section underscores it. He points to an
outlook at life and the pursuit of what is good as a source of great blessing. He thanks them for the gifts
they had sent to help him in his mission - and teaches what he had learned about the secret of
contentment.
A LONGER LOOK AT THE LESSONS moderated by Grace Gillespie in the fellowship hall. This
group discusses the Bible lessons (pericopes) which are read in church each Sunday. You are invited
every Sunday, but will not be lost if you miss a Sunday. This is a casual class with lots of interaction.
We pray for each other and care for each other. Join us in the fellowship hall, today and every Sunday.
KATHARINA & MARTIN LUTHER led by Eunice Maurer and Judy Nixon in the school library.
We will not be meeting this week, but will conclude our study next Sunday, September 10. How did this
most unlikely, most radical union between a runaway nun and a renegade monk come to be? How did
Martin Luther, the monk, and Katharina von Bora, the nun, come to wed in the first place? Come learn
about Katharina in our new Reformation Book Club series.
SUNDAY SCHOOL (9:15-10:15 A.M.)
Classes meet in the sanctuary following Fellowship Time for the Sunday school opening and will then
proceed to the following rooms:
Preschool through 8th grade in the parish center (lower level classrooms)
High school in the conference room
WEEKDAY BIBLE STUDIES
CONFESSIONS BIBLE STUDY led by Pastor Barton on Mondays 7-8 p.m. in the fellowship hall.
We will not be meeting on Monday, September 4 or 11, but will resume on Monday, September 18 with
a new study of a part of the Lutheran Confessions: The Power and Primacy of the Pope. We’ll consider
the role of the Pope in the Roman Catholic Church and our own view of church structure and power,
based on Scripture. New people are always welcome to join this study, (though we would encourage
women to consider attending the regular Ladies LifeLight Bible Study which meets at the same time on
Mondays or on Tuesday mornings). Contact Pastor Barton for details at: [email protected].
COFFEE CLUB led by Pastor French on Thursdays 7:00-7:45 a.m. in the conference room.
MEN’S BIBLE BREAKFAST led by Pastor Barton on Fridays 6:00-7:00 a.m. at the Downtowner
Restaurant. You can come for coffee or breakfast at 6:00 a.m. or just for the Bible study on the
Scripture lessons for the coming Sunday which begins about 6:25 a.m.

to give His life as a ransom for many (Matthew 18:1-20). In next week’s broadcast on September 10,
Dr. Gregory Seltz speaks on the topic, “Who’s the Greatest?” The Lutheran Hour is heard every week

GENERAL ANNOUNCEMENTS
PURDUE STUDENTS: A warm welcome to any and all Purdue students joining us for worship today!
We are elated to have you, and pray God’s richest blessings to you as you begin this new school year!
We’d like to keep you updated on things going on here at St. James, and as such, please be sure to
include your e-mail address when you sign the fellowship pad! We look forward to worshiping our
Lord Jesus with you again soon!
LIFE THOUGHTS IN THE CHURCH YEAR: Life Thoughts are designed to help pastors and
congregations see the church year through the lens of the sanctity of human life; they are based on the
appointed readings from Lutheran Service Book. September 3 – Like Peter, the world imitates Satan in
talking or acting as if some situations even Jesus shouldn’t redeem (Matthew 16:21-23). Though we
often allow this or even agree, still the Lord God does not forget or forsake us (Jeremiah 15:15, 20-21).
Indeed, He lifts up the lowly (Romans 12:16), because His vengeance has been repaid against our
crucified Savior instead (Romans 12:19). His forgiving goodness overcomes every evil, even sins
against life. Lord God of Hosts, by Your words let us bring rejoicing to those who weep. Amen.
CHOIR CALLOUT: The Lutheran Church has, since her birth, been called “the singing church.”
Luther himself had a very high esteem for music and church hymns. “Music is an outstanding gift of
God and next to theology.” [What Luther Says, Plass, CPH, p.979] Luther wrote many hymns in
German, restoring the music of the church to the people (much like he did with his German translation
of the Scriptures). We invite you to join in the heritage of our church as we prepare for the 500th
anniversary of the Reformation! Choir rehearsals will be held on Thursday evenings in the music
room (top of the stairs/west of the sanctuary). Our Bell choir meets at 5:30 and Adult Choir at 6:30. We
encourage all talents, high school age and older, to join us! It is good to give thanks to the Lord, to sing
praises to your name, O Most High! (Psalm 92:1)
ONE-TIME CHANGE OF DATE FOR FRIDAY FUN NIGHT: September’s First Friday Fun Night
will be happening on September 8 and is fun for ALL ages with cards, games, sports and food! Come
one, come all to the gym at 6:00 p.m.
LUTHERANISM 101/ABOVE ALL ELSE: Beginning on Sunday, September 10 during the
education hour, Pastor Heckert will start a new adult information (new member) class in the fellowship
hall (east of the sanctuary). Above All Else will introduce you to Christian doctrine as revealed by God
through Scripture. It explains the essentials of our faith: what the Church believes and what it means
to live “in Christ.” If you would like to brush up on your fundamentals of the faith and meet some
potential new members, we would love to have you join us! If you know of someone you would like the
church to send an invitation, please pass their information along to Nola in the church office (Mon-Fri
8:00a-5:00p) or give it to a pastor or one of the elders today.
NOAH: Beginning on Sunday, September 10 during the education hour, Pastor French will start a
new adult Bible study in the cafeteria (west of the sanctuary). The biblical account of Noah and the
Flood is one in which water is literally all over the place. What are we to make of this water story?
What message does it send about how God chooses to use water? Does it have any relation to the
Church today? These are the types of questions we will ask of the story in Genesis 6-9, a story that is
full of warning and consolation.
YOU ARE CORDIALLY INVITED: An Open House is being given for Judie Watts in celebration of
her 80th birthday. Please join us to wish her the best in the fellowship hall on Sunday, September 10
between 1:00 & 4:00 p.m.
LADIES LIFELIGHT BIBLE STUDIES - STARTING SEPTEMBER 11 & 12: Please reserve a
spot by September 5 by signing up in the welcome center (west lobby) so that study guides can be
ordered before the first classes begin.
Ruth/Esther led by Barb Kirkpatrick on Mondays from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. – Conference Room.
Contemporary issues were also faced by devout believers long ago. One of only two books of the Bible
named after a woman, the Book of Ruth tells the story of a young widow and her widowed mother-in-
law who must rely on a kinsman-redeemer. Although written some 3,000 years ago, the story of Ruth,
Naomi, and Boaz is a story of love and faithfulness. Through their lives, we see the greater drama of a
loving and faithful God providing His people with a greater Kinsman-Redeemer: Ruth’s descendant, our
Savior, Jesus Christ. The Book of Esther tells the tale of the young, beautiful Jewish girl, who by God’s
gracious providence became queen of Persia. With Mordecai, her protective and loving cousin, Esther
saves her people by exposing a cruel plot to exterminate the Jews remaining in Persia, who chose not to
return to the Promised Land. While God’s name does not appear in this book, He is the main character.
Working behind the scenes, God inspires faith in His gracious promises and enables His children to
accomplish extra-ordinary things on behalf of their neighbor.
Daniel led by Jan Harris on Tuesdays from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. – Conference Room.
The theme is God’s sovereignty. “The Most High God is sovereign over the kingdoms of men” (5:21).
Daniel’s life is nothing but a fine clear mirror; in it we see the conflict and victory of faith. He was
exalted in the world. God’s grace appears in Daniel through several Messianic prophets.

you tackle, at every moment in life, in whatever situation you find yourself, you have a calling, a
vocation. You get to bless people. You get to show God’s love. You get to elevate the conversation,
change the perspective, and bring dignity into a difficult world. You get to live in the life that He gifts
you with, love meant for you, love meant for all.” Rev. Dr. Gregory Seltz, The Lutheran Hour speaker
STEWARDSHIP GENEROSITY THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK: Matthew 16:26 – “For what will
it profit a man if he gains the whole world and forfeits his life?” He who dies with the most toys … is
dead. But the one who trusts in the Lord, even though he dies, yet shall he live. We live out our trust
in the Lord by faithfully fulfilling the roles God has given us to play in home, church, and society as
loving, generous people. Those who don’t know the Lord are afraid to be generous because they think
that what they give away is lost to them. But we who know the Lord know that the things of this world
become true blessings when they are used for God’s Kingdom.
$ FINANCIAL NEWS FROM MINDY SCHLOTMAN $
Let me give you a little update on the Sewer Project that was completed recently. I have finally received
some invoices toward this project. Brenneco, the plumbing company we chose, has been working with
us and are so kind since they are also on their own church boards and know how the financials can
become a challenge at times. The total invoice was $15,900 for the project, and I am aware of $2,490
we have received in donations toward the project. (Keep in mind I asked for folks to increase their
offering by $75 so I would not be aware of the majority of the donations!) We have received a $10,000
donation toward the project! I would like to say “THANK YOU” to all of you for helping us out and
keeping us moving ahead.

FOURTEENTH SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOST
September 10, 2017
Ezekiel 33:7–9
Romans 13:1–10
Matthew 18:1–20
Living as Humble Little Children of the Father
True greatness is not self-sufficient strength, but humility like that of a little child. The
greatness of childlike faith receives all good things as gracious gifts from our Father in heaven.
Apart from such faith, “you will never enter the kingdom of heaven,” but whoever is humbled
like a little child will be “the greatest in the kingdom of heaven” (Matthew 18:3–4). Though in
our sin we deserve to be “drowned in the depth of the sea” (Matthew 18:6), we have instead
been drowned (“buried”) with Christ in Baptism and then raised to the new, humble life of a
child of God. The Lord sends His watchman to warn us with a word from His mouth, in order
that we may not die in our iniquity, but be turned from our pride and selfishness to live (Ezekiel
33:7–9). Thus, we live in humility and faith before God as well as in love for our neighbor,
which “is the fulfilling of the law” (Romans 13:10). In the reverent fear of God, we do no harm
to our neighbor, but we “pay to all what is owed to them” (Romans 13:7) and we “owe no one
anything, except to love each other” (Romans 13:8).
SCHOOL NEWS FROM JAKE ROGERS
With God as our foundation, we educate & equip for service, for Christ,
the mind, heart, and spirit of today’s 21st Century learner.
SCHOOL THEME FOR 2017-2018: Act Justly. Love Mercy. Walk Humbly. (Micah 6:8)
For 166 years of ministry at St. James Lutheran School, our focus has and will always remain on us
teaching about a changeless Christ (our Rock) to a changing world. It is a constant theme for our school
and all Lutheran schools around the world. No matter what happens in our own lives or our world, we
rejoice that our hope is secure in Jesus Christ through His death on the Cross and resurrection. God calls
us to live out our school theme daily: to do what is right, to show love and mercy toward one other, and
to recognize that everything is a gift from God!

Rachel Meyer serves the Lord through The Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod (LCMS) as a missionary in Uganda. She teaches at a Lutheran primary school and supports the development of a continuing education program for the teachers. Rachel is also involved with the life and activities of a local congregation, giving her the wonderful opportunity to build relationships and share the Gospel with the local people.
Rachel’s hometown is Milwaukee, Wis. She received bachelor’s degrees in music education and elementary education from Concordia
University Chicago, River Forest, and a master’s degree in education with a specialization in elementary reading and literacy from Walden University. Before serving in Uganda, Rachel taught 2nd grade at Grace Lutheran School, Modesto, Calif. (2004-2008) and 4th grade at St. Paul’s Lutheran School, Bourbonnais, Ill. (2008-2014). She also taught general music to kindergarten through eighth grade at both schools. In addition, she served as a missionary teacher at Concordia English Language Academy, Chiayi, Taiwan (2014-2017).
Rachel’s previous mission service includes serving as a vacation Bible school teacher in Seoul, South Korea (July 2002), serving on a medical mission team in Honduras (July 2013), being a volunteer child care provider at Concordia Children’s Services in Manila, Philippines (Feb. 2015), and serving as a volunteer missionary with the LCMS’ Project 24 in Rongo, Kenya (Feb. 2016). In her free time, Rachel enjoys hiking, reading, music and spending time with family and friends.
Pray for Rachel as she serves in Uganda. Ask God to give her strength as she transitions to life in Uganda and learns the language and the culture. Pray that as she strives to understand the people of Uganda that God gives her opportunities to build relationships where she can share the love of Jesus. Pray for guidance and strength as Rachel builds her support network. Pray that the Holy Spirit works in the hearts of Rachel’s students, her coworkers and their families. Ask God to continue to grow Rachel in her faith and give her wisdom and encouragement to humbly share Christ’s love in word and deed. Pray that God’s name is glorified in all that Rachel does and says. Let us give thanks that Rachel is serving God’s children in this part of the world.
