Morgan Living River Festival 2017

Page 5

As I had not entered our boat we decided to give the Morris MO a run weather looked perfect. Stopped at Truro for

a stretch then cut across towards Eudunda, a couple of kilometres after Dutton two kangaroos stood up and watched

us pass. Just out of Eudunda on the Thiele Highway there is a property owned by an obvious Morris - Austin enthu-

siast, the number of vehicles around the house has decreased guess they must be selling a few most would be only

good for spares. Noticed on the old EBA Railway Siding (10kms before Morgan) there is a lady sitting on a seat

next to man standing with his dog waiting for a train, don’t know who put them there a welcome distraction on a

boring section of road. We arrived in Morgan the same time as the Peterborough Car Club, so we parked with them.

This year the festival was celebrating PS Canally’s 110th birthday and PS Marion’s 120th birthday. PS Canally has

had a lot of work done to its hull this year don’t think she will sink again engine restoration has also commenced. PS

Industry had steamed down from Renmark for the celebrations the Industry has the best sounding engine could lis-

ten to it all day. PS Marion and Industry were giving cruises, while the PS Marion was up river a couple of wake

boats tied up in her area despite calls for their owners to return it wasn’t until they were being dragged out of the

way before the owners returned, guess they were in the Pub pity as half of us were hoping the Marion would park on

top of them. As you can tell I am not a wake boat fan.

Putt Putts made regular excursions up and down the river most powered by single cylinder engines. Four or five

clubs had their stationary engines on display that added to the atmosphere. We left early (2ish) to see a couple of

friends across the river before heading home.

The run home was uneventful until between Kapunda and Freeling on a rise the sudden smell of steam had us on the

side of the road, a 4-inch crack across the head had us calling for a tow. Disappointing end to an excellent day’s run

we will be back next year, I have not looked at the Morris yet hope it is only the head.

NAME BADGES At our last committee meeting we discussed the display, or lack there-of, of members name badges. When the club holds is General Meetings at Glan-dore the attendee name Tags are available and should be worn. These also have a number on the back that is easy to remember and shows where the Tag needs to be returned in the case after the meeting concludes. This number should also appear in the sign-in book on entry to the meetings. However, the Meeting Tags can’t leave the club room and so members are encouraged to wear their Green name badge when on club runs. These make it easier when meeting and chatting with peo-ple. If you have lost your badge or never had one see our Treasurer to buy a replacement. Options and prices in the club merchandise advert in the magazine. Its not a big deal but it is much easier for new and established members to meet and talk to someone when they have a name to address people by. If you are like me and have a name memory problem…and who doesn’t…then it’s a convenient way to get to know people. It seems an easy ask and is a real ice-breaker for new members. Maybe leave the badge in your car?

GLENELG CHRISTMAS PAGEANT

We had a fabulous time at the Glenelg Christmas pageant today! 26 November 2017

Unfortunately Betsy (1924 Oakland) decided at the last minute that she didn't want to be in it, but as they say "the show must go on". Great job by all our dancers today and a big thank you to all of our teachers and helpers.

PS...For all the technically minded the vacuum tank stopped functioning.....now a work in progress.

BAY TO BIRDWOOD 2017

24th September was the Bay to Birdwood run for 2017. This year is was for the classic category of vehicles meaning

cars from 1 January 1956 to 31 December 1986. Thus 30 years to 60 years. And there were lots there !

We arrived at the start about 7.45 and already there were many hundreds of cars at the line up.

The concourse cars of course were spectacular and this run was one of the first to feature a new judging class being

Preservation Class. This was quite interesting as it was for cars, listed as entered for judging, that were deemed to

be largely original, authentic in every respect and not restored. Unlike the Concourse D’Elegance the owners did

not need a theme or to dress up to match the car era. First time judging for Classic cars.

The first cars were flagged off at 8.30 as planned. A little earlier than in previous years as the entry level was high

with over 1700 cars present. And a new route was set out with cars travelling up Anzac Highway all the way to West

Terrace, then through the City Centre on Grote and Wakefield Streets to the dreaded Dequetteville Round-About

Then north east on Fullarton to Payneham and Lower North East. All the way to the foot Anstey Hill where we

joined Grad Junction Road for a climb to Houghton and connected to the old route to Birdwood via Inglewood.

There were cars galore. However the glorious spring weather was kind to us with moderate temperatures and blue

skies making it a very enjoyable, albeit busy, drive to Birdwood. Some congestion at the West Terrace Turn. A small

heart stopping moment on the Anstey Hill climb when, on rounding a bend in the “fast” lane under heavy accelera-

tion to find an air cooled Fiat (I Think) had failed and blocked the lane with 4 cars already banked up. An unfortu-

nate place to have to find a roadside shelter for them I think being in a cutting with no shoulder.

Other than that it was a nice ride to Birdwood. By the time we arrived (some 80 minutes I think delayed from the

8.30 start until we could move off) we were relegated to the back paddock which I was hoping to avoid as there had

been significant rain the days before and I thought may be boggy. However, all was sound underfoot.

We had a good look around at the huge range of automotive metal on display. Just wonderful. Many cars had trav-

elled from interstate. We wandered over to the judging enclosure to watch the last few minutes of the judging.

Down to the final 5 Concours D’Elegance cars and the final 5 Preservation Class cars. I noted that one of the preser-

vation contenders was a very nice UK car but, in respect of originality and authenticity I noted it had had some work

done as the chrome trims were from an earlier series. Still a nice car. It did not take the trophy but was an impres-

sive close finisher. The Preservation Class winner was a delightful (and huge) Pontiac Bonneville 2 door coupe.

The final Concours D’Elegance winner a simply magnificent 1967 Bathurst Monaro presented better than original show room with some really original accessories…like a Bathurst Steel Esky, Sales Brochures, Colour selector pam-phlets and some advertising posters. A very worthy winner that just pipped an equally original XU1 Torana 2 Door to the line. Shane Conry

AAA MEMORIAL RUN DECEMBER 2017

The weather was perfect for our run, which had the interesting title of “Visiting Multicultural Places of Worship”.

I drove our 1969 MGB, and without a Navigator, I was a bit apprehensive about being able to find my way around Adelaide, and answer quiz questions. I needn’t have worried, as I was partnered with well known Rally Navigator and Raconteur Chris Gray !

Our first stop was the Holy Cross Catholic Church on Goodwood Road, where we had to record what was on the spire.

We then turned right into Greenhill Road, and answered a question regarding the Russian Orthodox Church, then on to Unley Road and South Terrace, then on to Halifax Street, where we correctly identified the Saint John the Evangelist Church.

We then passed the Kent Town Uniting Church on Fullarton Road and the Mormon Temple on Lower Portrush Road. We cruised almost the entire length of Regency Road, heading West, where we passed the Al Kahli Mosque, then turned left into Cheltenham Parade, viewing the Jehovah Witness building. It was then a left turn into Port Road, where we observed the Saint Margaret’s Anglican and the Serbian Orthodox churches.

Nearing the end of our ride [ and thinking of the B-B-Q to come], we visited the Saint Patrick “Italian” Catholic Church in Grote Street, then into Franklin Street, where we found the Greek Orthodox church of the Archangels Michael and Gabriel. That was the end of the run [ so I thought ], so we headed back to the clubrooms for lunch. As we handed in our run-sheets, I discov-ered that “someone” had not seen the 4th page containing a list of questions to be completed ? Oh well, there went the prize ???

Seriously, my thanks to Chris for a most entertaining drive, to Coral and David for their always great novelty run, and to Ed and his helpers back at the clubrooms, for another great lunch.

Best Wishes to all for a safe festive season and a prosperous 2018.

John Sommers.

General Information SA AIRCRAFT MUSEUM

This run was the first run for my 1929 Buick and all went well.

The run route was an easy drive and we got a few green lights which was even better. The

weather was great and i don't think anyone got left behind.

The Aircraft Museum was very interesting and it covered South Australian history with

aircraft, either donated or on loan as was the case with the F1-11 which was on loan from

the RAAF.

I thought the new hangar was the perfect shed size and was my ultimate dream. A few peo-

ple mentioned they could make use of the workshop and all the equipment and tools. In all

a great facility which has a growing collection.

The lunch at the Anchor was excellent and they did a good job getting us all fed in a

reasonable time.
