n The FIU men’s basketball team closes out its second road trip to Texas in the past three weeks, on Saturday, Jan. 25, when the Panthers visit The Super Pit in Denton, Texas, to face North Texas ... Game time is set for 6 p.m. ET and can be seen on CUSA.tv with Dave Barnett and Hank Dickenson calling the action.

n FIU looks to get its momentum back after a stretch where it won three-out-of-six games from Dec. 19 to Jan. 11 ... The Panthers have currently dropped three of their last four con-tests.

n Brian Beard, Jr. and Trejon Jacob scored 22 points apiece on Thursday night, however, Rice still handed the Panthers a tough 73-64 loss at Tudor Fieldhouse ... Beard, Jr. and Jacob accounted for 44 of FIU’s 64 points against the Owls.

n Beard, Jr. leads the Panthers in scoring, averaging 15.7 points-per-game ... He leads five players - three active - in double figures in the scoring column for FIU, along with Tre-jon Jacob (15.5 ppg) and Eric Lockett (13.9 ppg) who are second and third, respectively ... Willy Nunez, Jr. and Josh Stamps round out the double-digit scorers with a 12.7 and 12.0 point-per-game averages, respectively.


n Named the eighth head basketball coach at FIU on April 16, 2013.n Picked up his first win as the head coach at FIU with a 66-58 victory over Kennesaw State on Nov. 10, 2013. The win also marked the 100th-career victory for Evans.n During the 2015-16 season, Evans continued to watch over the development of All-Conference USA second team member - and NABC All-District honoree - Adrian Diaz, one of the top defenders in C-USA. Diaz would become the all-time leader in blocked shots at FIU during his senior campaign. In addition, junior college transfer, Donte McGill rose to be one of the top offensive players in the league averaging 16.1 points-per-game, good enough for eighth in C-USA.n During the 2014-15 campaign, Evans saw two of his players earn All-Conference USA honors. Dennis Mavin earned second team honors while Adrian Diaz was named to the All-C-USA Defensive Team. Diaz finished the year as the league leader in blocked shots per game (3.0 bpg), and was sixth in NCAA Division I in total blocked shots (99) and seventh in blocked shots per game. n In his first season at the helm, led FIU to a 15-win season. FIU picked up a big 72-61 victory over cross-state rival and 2012 Sweet Sixteen squad Florida Gulf Coast on Dec. 7 at FIU Arena. FIU earned seven Conference USA wins in its inaugural season in the league, including two victories over rival Florida Atlantic.n Coached Tymell Murphy to a Second-Team All-C-USA honor for his play during the 2013-14 season. Murphy finished the year averaging 16.6 points-per-game (No. 4 in the conference) on 58.6 percent shooting from the floor (No. 4 in the conference; No. 18 nationally).n During his time with the Spartans, Evans amassed a 99-94 record, including back-to-back, 20-win seasons (26-10 in 2011-12 & 21-12 in 2012-13).n During the 2012-13 season, led Norfolk State to an undefeated Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference regular season mark (16-0) en route to being named the MEAC Coach of the Year and the team’s second-straight post-season berth with an automatic bid to the 2013 National Invitation Tournament (NIT).n Was finalist for the Ben Jobe Award for the 2012-13 campaign, presented to the top minority coach in Division I basketball. He was also named a finalist for the Hugh Durham Award, presented to the top mid-major coach in Division I, and the Jim Phelan Award, presented to the top Division I coach.n In 2011-12, took the Spartans to new heights with the program’s first-ever Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) title and perhaps the biggest upset in NCAA Tournament history. In the 2012 NCAA Tourna-ment, the Evans-led Spartans knocked off the No. 2 seed Missouri Tigers, 86-84, becoming the fifth No. 15 seed (at the time) to defeat a No. 2 seed.

LAST TIME OUT AGAINST NORTH TEXASn FIU snapped its four-game losing streak with a 90-71 win over North Texas on Feb. 11, 2017, in Miami ... Elmo Ste-phen paced the way for the Panthers with a career-high 34 points and a career-best 12 points for his first collegiate dou-ble-double ... LAST TIME OUTn Trejon Jacob and Brian Beard, Jr. combined for 44 of FIU’s 64 points, but that wasn’t enough as the Panthers dropped a tough 73-64 loss to Rice on Jan. 25, in Houston.

n The first 10 minutes of the game proved to be a game of runs ... The Panthers scored the first six points of the game before the Owls retaliated with the next eight to take the lead ... FIU then netted the next five points to regain the advan-tage, 11-8 on a Jacob trey at 11:45 ... Rice took the lead and held it for the remainder of the first half with 6:06 left, pushing it to as many as seven points, 27-20, with 3:26 left before the break ... The Panthers shot just 35.5 percent (11-for-31) in the first stanza, including a dismal 2-for-11 from behind the three-point arc.

n Rice continued to hold the advantage early on in the sec-ond half until FIU used an 8-0 run to take a 45-44 lead on a baseline driving dunk by Michael Douglas with 13:36 left in the game ... The Panthers got the lead to as many as four points in the final 20 minutes of play, but the Owls’ 45.5 percent shooting from behind the three-point arc in the sec-ond half, including three timely three-point shots in the final seven-plus minutes, did FIU in.

n On the night, the Panthers shot just 36.2 percent from the field, including 27.3 percent from three-point range ... FIU, which has had troubles from the free-throw line this season, hit 72.7 percent (8-for-11) from the charity stripe, it’s second-best percentage of the year, and its second-straight game hitting better than 70 percent from the line ... LEARNING ON THE JOBn With only six players returning from last year’s roster (including Jay Harvey who missed the season with a foot injury), the Panthers return just 23.8 percent of the minutes played during the 2016-17 campaign ... FIUGAMENOTESn The Stetson game came one game - and five days - be-fore the Panthers dropped a 95-87 triple-overtime affair to Elon in the first game of the Black & Gold Shootout in Mil-waukee on Nov. 17 ... FIU led the Phoenix by 13, 61-48, with just 7:29 left in regulation.

n FIU also dropped a tough two-point decision, 87-85, at North Florida on Dec. 13 in Jacksonville, and dropped a 71-66 overtime affair at home to Middle Tennessee on Jan. 4.

n Most recently, FIU was handed a tough 72-68 loss at UTEP on Jan. 13 ... The Panthers had their opportunities, however could not overcome a 46.7 percent (14-for-30) ef-fort from the charity stripe.

OT WOESn FIU hasn’t had much luck in overtime games during the past two-plus seasons ... The Panthers are 0-11 in their last 11 extra session games, with all 11 taking place since the beginning of the 2015-16 season, and 3-15 in their last 18 overtime games.

A LOOK AT THE 2017-18 NON-CON SCHEDULEn FIU’s 31-game schedule features 16 homes games at Ocean Bank Convocation Center, with eight of those games coming against non-conference foes ... In addition, FIU will once again take on non-conference in-state rivals Stetson, USF, North Florida and Florida Gulf Coast, and will play in the Black & Gold Shootout hosted by the University of Wis-consin Milwaukee ... ISAIAH BANKS NOTESn Is averaging 2.4 points- and 1.3 rebounds-per-game.

n Had the best game of his short collegiate career on Nov. 17 against Elon, netting a career-high 17 points and grab-bing a career-best five rebounds.

n Scored 10 points on 5-for-7 shooting (71.4 percent) from the field against Florida National on Nov. 29.

n Banks is known for his backboard-shattering dunk that made him an Internet sensation in January 2017 ... The play was ESPN Sportscenter’s No. 1 Play of the Day on January 11, in addition to the No. 2 Dunk of the Year - second only to Spartanburg (S.C.) Day School’s Zion Williamson - and the No. 9 Play of the Year by MaxPreps.

BRIAN BEARD, JR. NOTESn Beard, Jr. leads the team, and is 11th in Conference USA in scoring, averaging 15.7 points-per-game, and leads the Panthers in assists dishing out 5.4 per-contest, good enough for fifth in C-USA (through games of Jan. 25) ... He has scored in double figures in 19-consecutive games played, after netting just five points against Florida Memorial in the season-opener on Nov. 10.

n Is tops in Conference USA, and is third in the nation (through Jan. 25), in steals-per-game, averaging 3.1 per-contest.

n Established a career-high for handouts with nine against UAB on Jan. 6, surpassing his previous best of eight set two games prior against Florida Atlantic on Dec. 30.

n Fell one assist shy of equaling his career-high when he dished out eight assists at UTSA on Jan. 11 and then again on Jan. 20 against Charlotte.

n Had 10 points at UTSA on Jan. 11 ... Was 3-for-6 (50.0 percent) from the field, including an impressive 66.7 percent (2-for-3) from behind the three-point arc, and a perfect 2-for-2 from the free-throw line ... Also had four rebounds and tied his career-high with three steals.

HASSAN HUSSEIN NOTESn Is averaging 6.6 points-per-game, good enough for sixth on the team in scoring, and third in rebounding, grabbing 3.8 boards-per-contest.

n Has shot 50 percent or better from the field in nine of FIU’s 21 games this season, and 60 percent or better in six games, including a 75 percent night (3-for-4) against Middle Tennessee on Jan. 4 ... Also had a 70 percent effort (7-for-10) against James Madison on Dec. 16 ... In addition, he shot better that 60 percent or better against Concordia-St. Paul (66.7 percent) on Nov. 19, USF (62.5 percent) on Dec. 11, North Florida (66.7 percent) on Dec. 13, and at UTEP (60.0 percent) on Jan. 13.

n Is shooting 47.6 percent (49-for-103) from the field in his last 14 games.

n Had a career-high 19 points at UTEP on Jan. 13, to go along with a career-best nine rebounds, falling one board shy of his first career double-double ... Was 9-for-15 (60.0 percent) from the field against the Miners.

THE PANTHERS SHED A LITTLE LIGHT DURING A DIFFICULT TIMEn The men’s basketball team visited and spent time with about 100 special needs evacuees that were housed on FIU’s cam-pus due to Hurricane Irma. The evacuees were from the decimated parts of the U.S. Virgin Islands, and were dialysis patients from the areas hardest hit by the hurricane. The players also had a chance to meet and speak with President Luis Guillermo Solís of Costa Rica (inset) who was also visiting with evacuees.


n Poured in a team-high 18 points, and a team-high six rebounds against North Florida on Dec. 13 ... Shot 66.7 per-cent (8-for-12) from the field and a perfect 2-for-2 from the free-throw line ... Also recorded a career-high three steals.

n Hussein had 13 points at USF on Dec. 11 ... Shot 62.5 percent (5-for-8) from the floor, and 75.0 percent (3-for-4) from the charity stripe.

n Has started in every game this season after only getting the starting nod twice during his collegiate career prior to this year.

n Enjoyed his first full season with FIU, during the 2016-17 campaign, after playing in just 14 games his first two years due to injury … Saw time in 23 games, getting the start in one game.

TREJON JACOB NOTESn Second on the team in scoring, and is 13th in Conference USA (through Jan. 25), averaging 15.5 points-per-game, and is second in rebounding, grabbing 4.5 boards-per-con-test.

n He is shooting 44.1 percent (116-for-263) from the field ... Has shot better than 46 percent from the field in 11 of his 21 games with FIU, and 50 percent or better 10 times, in-cluding a career-high 62.5 percent (10-for-16) against South Alabama on Dec. 2.

n Has shot over 50 percent from the field in six of the last 12 games for the Panthers.

n Had a record-setting night against Florida Gulf Coast, on Dec. 19, pouring in a career-high - and men’s Ocean Bank Convocation Center record 38 points on 13-for-19 (68.4 percent) shooting from the field, including 7-for-11 (63.6 percent) from behind the three-point arc, and 5-for-11 (45.5 percent) from the free-throw line ... n Recorded the fifth 20-point game of his FIU career on Jan. 25, with a 22-point effort at Rice ... Also had eight re-bounds against the Owls, falling one shy of equaling his career-high.

n Hit on 54.5 percent (6-for-11) of his shots from the field, including 50.0 percent (4-for-8) from behind the three-point arc, en route to his 16 points in the Panthers’ win over Char-lotte on Jan. 20.
