TEAM BUDGET The total value of the materials used must not exceed $150US.

TIME LIMIT Complete the Presentation (including setup) in 8 minutes or less.

APPROACHING THE CHALLENGE This Challenge can be solved on many levels, ranging from the simple to the complex.

Focus on solving this Challenge based on the intent in which it was designed. All Challenge requirements must be met unless otherwise stated using the terms “should” or “may.” If you find the details of the Challenge unclear, we encourage you to ask for a Team Clarification. (See Rules of the Road.) Remember – if it doesn’t say you can’t, then you can.

SOLVING THE CHALLENGE The information in the following materials is binding on all teams.

Your team must read and follow this Challenge in its entirety, the Rules of the Road resource for teams, and all Published Clarifications (online at DestinationImagination.org).

THE CENTRAL CHALLENGE

A. THE STORY

1. Create and present a story that features an Attraction operating in an Unlikely Location.

2. For this Challenge, the Unlikely Location may be any place, real or imaginary, where amusement park attractions are not usually found. A real or imaginary carnival, festival, arcade, theme park or amusement park is NOT a valid Unlikely Location.

3. The story may be set in multiple locations, but only one will earn points for the Unlikely Location.

4. The Attraction must be in the Unlikely Location during all or part of the Presentation.

5. The story must show the impact of the Attraction, including its operation, on the Unlikely Location.

6. The story may be set in any time period(s): past, present or future.

B. THE ATTRACTION

1. Research and explore Scientific Concepts used in the operation of amusement park attractions. These attractions may be rides, games, shows, concessions or other activities that are typically found in an amusement park.

2. Design and build an Attraction that operates live during the 8-minute Presentation. Dramatic simulations and pre-recorded demonstrations do NOT meet the requirements for the Attraction.

3. For this Challenge, the Attraction is any team-created device that operates using at least 3 Scientific Concepts during the Presentation.

4. For this Challenge, a Scientific Concept is one or more rules and/or natural laws that describe an action or mechanical process.

5. Select two of the Scientific Concepts from Table 1.

6. Your team may choose the third Scientific Concept from Table 1, or you may choose a different Scientific Concept not found in the Table. The third Scientific Concept may be from physics, mathematics, computer science, chemistry, biology or any other scientific field.

7. Your team may use more than 3 Scientific Concepts during the operation of the Attraction. However, only the 3 Scientific Concepts listed on the Tournament Data Form will be scored in IV.B.2.

Table 1: Scientific Concepts for the Attraction

Aerodynamics Angular Momentum Buoyancy

Electricity Kinetic Energy Lever/Leverage

Magnetism Newton’s Laws of Motion Optics

Oscillation Pneumatics/Hydraulics Thermodynamics

8. For each Scientific Concept chosen from Table 1, your team may use one or more of the rules or laws of that Scientific Concept in the operation of the Attraction. In either case, it will only count as one of your team’s 3 Scientific Concepts used in the operation of the Attraction.

9. If your team chooses one rule or law that can be considered to be part of multiple Scientific Concepts, it will only count as one of your team’s 3 Scientific Concepts used in the operation of the Attraction.

10. At the tournament, your team should be prepared to share your research about the Scientific Concepts with the Appraisers. Questions about the validity of your team’s chosen Scientific Concepts will not be answered in the Clarification process.

11. All parts of the Attraction should work together but are not required to be physically connected to each other.

12. Team members may operate, power, ride, play or otherwise interact with the Attraction. However, a team member cannot be any part of the Attraction.

13. The operation of the Attraction should be clearly observable from 25ft (7.62m) away.

C. TECHNICAL INNOVATION AND TECHNICAL DESIGN OF THE ATTRACTION

1. Your team will earn points for Technical Innovation and Technical Design based on all methods and Scientific Concepts actually used or attempted during the Presentation to operate the Attraction.

2. If the Attraction fails to operate successfully, your team may still earn points for the Technical Innovation and the Technical Design of the methods and Scientific Concepts used in the attempt to operate the Attraction. Your team’s score for Technical Design may be affected.

3. Design and build all parts of the Attraction using your own ideas and skills. Your team may incorporate commercially produced items, but for scoring, Appraisers will only consider your team’s changes and/or additions to those items.

4. An Attraction that uses less direct team member involvement may earn more points for Technical Innovation and Technical Design than methods that have more direct team member involvement.

Page 5: 2017-2018 scientific

D. THE UNLIKELY LOCATION

1. During the Presentation, visibly and audibly represent the Unlikely Location.

2. The visual representation may include set pieces, props, backdrops, scenery and/or any other visual elements your team chooses to portray the Unlikely Location.

3. The auditory representation may include any sounds your team uses to portray the Unlikely Location.

4. If your team chooses a location that is not a valid Unlikely Location, your team will earn 0 points for IV.A.3, IV.B.1, IV.C.1, IV.C.2, IV.C.3 and IV.C.4. (See I.A.2.)

5. If the Attraction is not located in the Unlikely Location at some point during the 8-minute Presentation, your team will earn 0 points for IV.A.3 and IV.B.1.

6. If the Attraction does not operate successfully in the Unlikely Location, your team will earn 0 points for IV.B.1.

TEAM CHOICE ELEMENTSA. Present TWO creations that show off your team’s interests, skills, areas of strength, and talents.

Your team may create anything it wishes, including props, music, technical gadgets, costumes, physical actions, etc.

B. Each Team Choice Element should have a meaningful connection to your team’s Central Challenge solution and must be presented as part of the 8-minute Presentation.

C. A Team Choice Element may not be a specific item that is required in the Central Challenge that is already being evaluated. A Team Choice Element MAY be a single unique PART of a required item, as long as it can be evaluated as a stand-alone item. Both Team Choice Elements may be presented at the same time ONLY IF both can be easily identified and scored separately. Examples of these can be found in Rules of the Road.

D. Each Team Choice Element will be evaluated in three ways: for creativity and originality, for quality, workmanship or effort that is evident, and for integration into the Presentation.

AT THE TOURNAMENT

A. Presentation Area: The minimum required size is 8ft x 10ft (2.44m x 3.05m). Your team may use any additional space that tournament officials designate as available, but your team should be prepared to present your solution in the minimum space. The Presentation Area will be a large space with a hard floor, such as wood, linoleum, concrete or very short-napped carpet. Your team should be prepared to deal with a variety of floor surfaces. A single 3-prong electrical outlet will be provided at the edge of each Presentation Area for your team’s use.

B. Forms: Your team will need to bring your completed Expense Report, Declaration of Independence and Tournament Data Forms to the tournament. (See Rules of the Road for the Expense Report and Declaration of Independence. Tournament Data Forms can be found at the end of this Challenge.)

C. Identification Sign: Your team will provide a freestanding sign displaying your team name, Team Number, school/organization and level. The purpose of the sign is to identify your team to the Appraisers. (See Rules of the Road, Team Identification Sign.)

D. Instant Challenge: At a tournament, your team will solve one Instant Challenge in addition to showcasing your Team Challenge solution. Instant Challenges are kept secret until the day of the tournament. (See Rules of the Road.) Because Instant Challenge is worth 25% of a team’s overall score at a tournament, teams often practice different types of Instant Challenges throughout the season. (See Roadmap.)
