Introduction to Zee’s Gymnastics Welcome to the Team! We would like to welcome your family to our Competitive Gymnastics Team. Through this team handbook, we hope to give you more insight into how our Competitive program operates and answer most of your questions. First, and foremost, we strive to provide a fantastic gymnastics experience. We are here for the young athletes, many who have hopes and dreams of being the best they can be in life and in the sport of gymnastics. We are here to support that dream. For this dream to become a reality, the gymnasts, parent and coaches must function as a TEAM. After reading this handbook, if you have any questions about the program, please feel free to ask. Competitions Unlike years past, this season we are taking a stand against having to compete on Sundays during church worship times. As part of every competition registration, a statement will be included that will strongly request that our athletes NOT compete on Sunday before 12:30pm, to allow our families time to worship before coming to compete. I expect some competitions to honor our request, while others will simply not be able to comply due to the sheer number of athletes competing over a given weekend. If the competition schedule is not conducive to your worship times, you will be allowed to miss the competition for religious purposes and there will be no negative impact on your athlete. The competition host may require a financial forfeiture.

Training Content To understand what goes into the development of a competitive gymnast, one must understand exactly what it is we are trying to achieve during training. There are four fundamental areas of development which need to be addressed during training:

1. Strength 2. Flexibility 3. Skills 4. Discipline

1. Strength-One aspect of sports is to make difficult activities look easy. This is easier to accomplish if the athlete has the required strength to effectively complete the skills. Strength training also plays a huge role in preventing and reducing injuries. As the gymnast advances in levels and skills, so does the level of strength training. It may appear as the gymnast is simply repeating basic exercises, but over the course of time, repetitions, resistance and range of motion are changed to continue to challenge the gymnast.

2. Flexibility-This is critical to long-term success of all gymnasts. Flexibility adds to the aesthetic appeal during performances, and allows the athlete to easily maneuver new skills that require the flexibility that is learned in the early levels.

3. Skill Development- There are two categories: Basic and New. Basics are like the ABC’s of gymnastics. These basics are used to compose routines and sequences. These basic building blocks of the sport must be refined in order to permit the gymnast to improve their performances. This is why we continually review and drill skills. 4. Discipline-Discipline plays an integral role in training and conditioning. The coaches must constantly keep all athletes focused and training hard to allow them to continually improve their performance.

USA GYMNASTICS (USAG) USA Gymnastics is the national governing body for the sport of gymnastics in the United States. USAG gets its designation from the International Olympic Committee and the International Gymnastics Federation. USA Gymnastics sets the rules and policies that govern gymnastics in this country. Training and selecting the USA Gymnastics Teams for the Olympics and World Championships are just two of the many responsibilities of USA Gymnastics. Competition at USAG sanctioned events is usually very tough and awards are only given to the top gymnasts in each age group. For more information on USA Gymnastics please check out the website at www.usagym.org. Description of USAG Junior Olympic Levels Compulsory: All gymnasts perform the exact same routines. Optional: All gymnasts have their own routines. Levels 4-5-6-7: Compulsory Levels 4, 5, 6 and 7 are progressive in nature, building upon the skills required at the previous level. Competitive opportunities are provided up to and including the USA Gymnastics State Championships. The highest level of competition is at the Regional Championships. Optional Levels 8-10: Levels 8, and 9 have difficulty restrictions, while Level 10 has no restrictions in the skill choice. Composition is evaluated at Levels 8, 9, and 10.

• Level 8 have competitive opportunities up to and including State Championships and Regional Championships.

• Additional competitive opportunities are provided for Levels 9-10, culminating at the Jr. Olympic National Championships.

Our Social Media Outlets ACE Website: www.acegadsden.com Twitter: @ACEofGadsden Facebook: www.facebook.com/ACEofGadsden The ACE Website will be your source for important information regarding Zee’s Gymnastics announcements, calendars, competition information and practice schedules. The website is also used for class registration. We will use Twitter and Facebook as an outlet for exciting announcements, athlete and team “shout-outs,” picture and video posting, last minute updates and even contests throughout the year.

Healthy & Productive Communication General Communication

• Coaches will be available following classes and team practices to answer any questions regarding your athlete, their needs and their individual progress.

• Coaches will not entertain questions regarding specific strategic decisions in a public setting.

• If you or your gymnast would like a better understanding of level placement, team decisions, etc., please email JR Zeringue. We will then set up a meeting with you, your gymnast, JR Zeringue and the athlete’s coach. We keep an open door policy with communication and will attempt to help each parent and gymnast understand every decision in which they are involved.

• It is inappropriate for a gymnast or a parent to approach other gym members about a problem they have with a coach or teammate, regarding personal objections to coaching decisions, or disagreements with an administrative decision. This leads to unnecessary drama and will result in immediate dismissal from our program(s).

• If there is a matter that seems to remain unresolved, or if the gymnast has clearly legitimate concerns that speaking to the coach will not or cannot possibly resolve the matter, please bring the concern directly to JR Zeringue.

Communication with Staff

• The Gymnastics Program, Staff, Gymnasts and Parents are all considered a part of the family. Gymnasts and parents should feel comfortable speaking to the staff freely with any questions and/or concerns. This “open communication” is needed to ensure that there are no oversights within our teams and that situations involving or affecting the gymnast are handled appropriately.

• We strongly encourage that parents have their gymnast speak with coaches directly to remove any feelings of a communication barrier.

• During practices, coaches are needed to coach and instruct the team. Parents should never approach a coach during class or practice. Any issues that arise during a class or practice will be discussed at the end of practice. If an issue is urgent, please have the front desk notify JR Zeringue immediately.

• During competitions, coaches are needed to coach and instruct the team. Parents should never approach a coach with an issue at competitions. Any issues that arise during competition will be promptly addressed the following week. Please email JR Zeringue for prompt resolution.

• While in the gym, verbal communication regarding athletes, parents, classes, etc., should be held in private. Coaches will be available to discuss concerns regarding your athlete and only your athlete.

• We have a strict policy in place stating that Coaches are not available to discuss: • Information regarding other athletes and/or parents. • Coaches who do not coach their athlete. • Decisions made by the Administrative Staff. • Issues that involve any type of comparison of their athlete to another athlete, Coach to

Coach, or Our Program to any other gymnastic training facilities. • If a concern is emotional or heated, we recommend a "cooling period" before contacting

JR Zeringue and/or the Coach. We understand that issues involving a child are very important and require quick resolution; therefore, we want to ensure that the situation is of constructive resolve.

develop a discipline plan that incorporates gym conditioning as part of the process. This helps the gymnasts, the parent and the coach’s development plans.

• Refrain from threatening to quit or pull their child from a team. This is unacceptable parent behavior that will not be tolerated. Any such threats will result in immediate dismissal from the program.

• Understand that the parent viewing area is open as a privilege and not a right. If the viewing area becomes a parent issue, we reserve the right to close the area at any time without prior notice.

Parent Travel Obligations

• Parents are responsible for their gymnast’s activities and behavior at out-of-town events. • Parents must understand that camps and competitions are not vacations. The gymnast’s

time and focus should be fully committed to our program and all related activities throughout the entirety of the event.

• Please note that with all out of town travel events, you must arrive at least 30mins prior to the scheduled event time to ensure proper attire, hair and check-in of all gymnasts.

• If a parent/guardian cannot attend an out of town event, you must arrange for another program parent, or responsible adult, to travel with your gymnast. They will assume responsibility for the gymnast and ensure the gymnast’s adherence to all our rules and policies throughout the entirety of the event.

Illness: Gymnasts are expected to be at practice unless they have a fever, as fever can mean that a gymnast is contagious. Practice participation will be situation-based and at the Coach’s discretion. When absences due to illness perpetually occur, a doctor’s note listing the treatment and length of recovery is required. Continued absences may result in the student not being registered to compete.

Injury: In the event that a gymnast is injured, you should notify your coach immediately. Please update the coach with details concerning the prognosis, recovery time and any change in circumstance affecting their ability to perform.

• Injured Gymnasts must continue with fee payments in full. Depending upon the injury and time of recovery, JR Zeringue will determine what the athlete will be allowed to participate in at practice. This may include weight and strength conditioning based upon the injury.

Unexpected/Family Emergency: Contact JR Zeringue.

The listed fees are only an estimate of the season’s costs. Any additional merchandise, hotel fees and transportation costs are not included. This financial commitment is for a full 12 months. Payment plans can be found at the end of the handbook. If you commit to becoming a member of a team, you are responsible for all costs and fees associated for the season entirely.

Individual Evaluations and Fees

Individual Team Selections Individual evaluations are a very laid-back, low stress evaluation process used for selecting the appropriate competitive level based on USAG rules and regulations. We do not want the gymnast to feel as though they are participating in a stressful “try-out” process or that they are inadequate. We offer a gymnastics program for gymnasts of all ages and skill levels. We will not allow gymnasts who have not met their previous season financial commitment to participate in Team Selection. The Gymnastics Level Selection Process is structured as follows:

• Gymnasts in the compulsory program will be required to show all skills required by USAG for levels 1-7 that are set forth for each of these levels. If a gymnast wants to move up levels they must have the appropriate skills to include 100% completion of the previous level and 95% completion of the next level skills. This move will be at the discretion of Kaleb Zeringue and JR Zeringue.

• Gymnasts may also show skills they are currently working on to move up levels or improve the performance of current skills in their current competitive level.

• After all gymnasts have been evaluated, Kaleb Zeringue and JR Zeringue will assign the appropriate competitive level to each gymnast or appropriate practice class for non-competitive gymnast.

• Gymnasts will be sized for the practice clothes in April and payment will be billed in May. Competition attire and warmup payment will be billed in August. These items are a custom-made design and take at least 10 weeks to arrive. We must order these by the beginning of August to have them in time for the first competition.. Items will not be ordered if they have not been paid for or a payment plan set up with Kelley Zeringue.

Quitting the Sport If you decide that this sport is not for you and you wish to quit, you must first meet face to face with Coach Kaleb and Coach JR. This meeting is not optional and may or may not be attended by

the parents. Parents will be financially responsible for fees in full that have already been paid out on your behalf. These fees are expected to be paid in accordance with the assigned payment schedule.

Grips, Rips and Nutrition

Grips It is the coach’s discretion when a gymnasts starts to wear grips. Please make sure your gymnast is checking their grips periodically: they can be dangerous if they are worn out. Gymnasts are permitted to come to practice early to break in grips. When the coach decides the gymnast needs to purchase grips they can be purchased from http://www.ten-o.com. The grips must have a dowel and can either be velcro or buckle closure. Treatment of Rips Gymnasts should expect to get rips on their hands from working on the bars. Here are some treatment methods that the gymnast can do at home to help heal and prevent rips. 1. Before going to bed the gymnast should put ointment on the rip (Neosporin, Preparation H,

Cumarindine), followed by a band-aid and a sock or glove over the hand. They should keep this on while sleeping to keep the moisture in.

2. Hand lotion, Vitamin E or Aloe Vera can also help heal a rip. 3. Trimming calluses is also recommended. Younger gymnasts may need help with this. 4. The gymnasts should not come to practice with band-aids or tape on their rips. Nutrition As in any competitive sport, nutrition is a major contributor to performance. Zee’s has contracted with a Certified Sports Nutritionist to provide education to our gymnasts as well as our parents. We will host nutrition presentations regularly and expect everyone to attend and gain the valuable knowledge. These presentations are provided at NO Cost to your family.
