Preconference Ticketed Events

Annual AETA and CETA/ACTE Golf Tournament

The 2017 golf tournament will take place at Celebration Golf Club on Thursday, October 26.

At Celebration Golf Club, it’s all about you! Since opening for play in 1996, Orlando golf hasn’t been the same. Celebration Golf Club believes there is a difference between “playing” a golf course and “experiencing” the game of golf on a course that was inspired by its Old World legacy.

This course was the final one to be co- designed by the renowned masters of golf course architecture, Robert Trent Jones Senior and Junior.

In designing Celebration Golf Club their combined talents created a course unlike any other in the nation. It’s lush, almost like a natural park, with undulating swells and topography. This course is reflective of the very best of every course Robert Trent Jones Senior and Junior have created around the world.

Dr. Daniela Demetrio Daniela Demetrio received her DVM degree in 1999 and her master of science degree (animal reproduction) in 2006 from the Sao Paulo State University, FMVZ-UNESP, Brazil. Her passion for bovine embryo production started in 2000 when she learned to flush cows and transfer embryos while working under the tutelage of Dr. Jose Renato Chiari, one of the first veterinarians who started to apply embryo transfer commercially in Brazil. She joined his embryo transfer practice, SAMVET Embrioes, in 2001. Her first exposure to in vitro embryo production was in 2002 during a four-month training course at the National Livestock Breeding Center in Fukushima, Japan. In 2003 IVF became a part of her practice. Demetrio received the award for Best Research Study in Applied Science from the Brazilian Embryo Transfer Association (SBTE) in 2006 for her work comparing AI and ET in lactating Holstein cows. In 2007 she moved to Riverdale, California, with her husband to run the embryo transfer program and set up an IVF laboratory for Ruann and Maddox Dairies, where approximately 7000 Holstein in vivo and in vitro embryos are produced per year for in-house use and to be exported worldwide.

Dr. Glenn Engelland

Dr. Peter Hansen

Peter J. Hansen is a distinguished professor and L.E. “Red” Larson Professor of Animal Sciences at the University of Florida. His research focuses on the biology of pregnancy and embryonic survival and development of methods to improve fertility and assisted reproductive technologies in livestock (particularly dairy cattle). Particular emphasis is placed on elucidating effects of elevated temperature on pregnancy, characterizing the nature of maternal control of early embryonic development, and identifying genes controlling embryonic survival and fertility. In addition, work is underway to develop methods to improve dairy cow fertility during heat stress and to increase profitable uses of embryo transfer. Hansen received the BS in agricultural sciences from the University of Illinois in 1978, where he was first exposed to animal reproduction by Chuck Graves and Phil Dziuk. He completed graduate school with Ed Hauser in the Endocrinology-Reproductive Physiology Program at the University of Wisconsin (MS, 1980; PhD, 1983), did a postdoc in the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at the University of Florida from 1983 to 1984 with Mike Roberts and Fuller Bazer, and spent a sabbatical leave at the University of Guelph in 1993 with Allan King. Hansen joined the faculty at Florida as an assistant professor in the College of Veterinary Medicine in 1984 and transferred to the Dairy Science Department (now Department of Animal Sciences) in 1986. Hansen has published over 270 peer-reviewed research papers and mentored 40 graduate students, 13 postdoctoral fellows, and 40 visiting scientists. His research has been funded by USDA, NIH, BARD, and the Southeast Milk Check-Off Program. He is a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), the American Dairy Science Association (ADSA), and the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science. Among his awards are the Physiology and Endocrinology Award from the American Society of Animal Science (2002); Pharmacia & Upjohn Physiology Award (1997) and Land O’Lakes Award (2010) from ADSA; the Trainee Mentoring Award (2010) and Research Award (2014) from the Society for the Study of Reproduction; 2012 Mentor of the Year Award from the Morulas Student Organization of the International Embryo Technology Society (IETS); and the J. Dr. Francisco Peñagarciano Francisco Peñagaricano is assistant professor of statistical and quantitative genetics and genomics in the Department of Animal Sciences at the University of Florida. Peñagaricano is originally from Uruguay, where he received two BS degrees, one in biology and another in biochemistry, and also a MS degree in animal quantitative genetics, all from Universidad de la República. He continued his graduate studies at the University of Wisconsin– Madison, where he gained a MS in statistics and a PhD in animal science. His research program focuses on the development and application of statistical and computational methods for the analysis of phenotypic and molecular data in livestock species. He also conducts an extension program focused on educating dairy and livestock producers and allied industries about practical and economically important aspects of genetic and genomic selection.

Dr. Ky Pohler Ky received a BS in Animal Science from Texas A&M University, and an MS and PhD in Animal Science from University of Missouri. During his time at University of Missouri, Ky worked on developing prediction models of embryonic mortality and pregnancy loss in cattle. Ky is currently a faculty member at the University of Tennessee in the Department of Animal Science. Ky’s research interest are focused around understanding the physiological and molecular mechanisms that control reproductive efficiency in cattle. More specifically, his lab is interested in the mechanisms that lead to embryonic and fetal mortality in cattle and development of management strategies to overcome these losses. Embryonic mortality can be classified into early (< d 28 of gestation) or late (> d 28 of gestation), depending on the exact timing at which it occurs during gestation. Reports of high fertilization rates after a single insemination (~90%), followed by pregnancy rates of 60 to 70% on d 28 in cows indicate that early embryonic mortality may be 20 to 30% in beef cows. Documented causes of early embryonic mortality range from genetic abnormalities to uterine-embryo asynchrony to failure of maternal recognition of pregnancy and this has been an area of intense investigation. Late embryonic mortality (> d 28 of gestation) has been reported in both beef/dairy cattle and may vary from 3.2 to 42.7%. Currently, there is very little known about the causes of late embryonic mortality. However, Silke et al. (2002) suggested that the economic consequences of each unit of late embryonic mortality are greater than that of early mortality. Along with the increased economic consequences, late embryonic mortality is becoming more evident in both the beef and dairy industries based on the shift to early pregnancy diagnosis (~d28-35 of gestation).

In an effort to understand reproductive efficiency in cattle Ky’s labs primary research focuses are:

1. Elucidate the physiological and molecular mechanisms associated with fertility in cattle, primarily late embryonic mortality using in vivo prediction models which are based on pregnancy associated glycoproteins or PAGs

2. Develop in vivo models to predict and study early embryonic mortality using exosomal-derived microRNAs 3. Develop management strategies that can increase reproductive efficiency in cattle.

Dr. Thomas Spencer

Tom Spencer is a professor in the Division of Animal Sciences and Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology and Women’s Health at the University of Missouri in Columbia. The long-term goal of his research program is to discover and understand key physiological and genetic mechanisms regulating development and function of the uterus and placenta and translate that knowledge into improvement of fertility in domestic animals and humans. His research in reproductive and developmental biology uses a number of different animal models (sheep, beef cattle, dairy cattle, mice) as well as human tissues. Broadly, current discovery foci of the program include understanding (1) cellular and molecular mechanisms regulating gland development and function in the uterus using genetically engineered mice and sheep; (2) genetic pathways regulating fertility in beef cattle, dairy cattle, mice, and humans; and (3) physiological pathways regulating pregnancy recognition and establishment using cattle, sheep, and mice.
