Dear Donors, Dear Friends and Supporters,
Being alone in a room with bare walls is a very frightening experience. The walls become blank
canvases, upon which children, adolescents and even adults may impose their fears. As we know,
visual art has a profound effect on the human psyche and makes a positive impact on the
emotional state of patients, residents, caregivers and staff. Helping to direct their thoughts to
more soothing associations is a useful adjunct to the healing process and to well-being in general.
Since 2008 we have been building collaborative partnerships with local institutions all over
Europe. Bringing together healthcare institutions, academic institutions, schools, artists, local
communities and generous donors, we work toward our vision of a world in which illness,
accidents and difficult circumstances become a less traumatic and fearful experience thanks to
a reassuring and welcoming atmosphere.
Thanks to our generous donors, in 2017 we have been able to complete therapeutic murals in 18
wards (with 85% of follow-up projects) across 4 countries, bringing us to a total of 160 projects
in 14 countries, and brightening the lives of 3.1 million children, adolescents and adults since
our creation.
The artists created each time bespoke projects, to meet the needs of patients, residents and staff
members. For example we created gigantic murals and pictogrammes to support the integration
and well-being of residents living in the largest refugee centre in Switzerland. We also used
magnetic paint to make our paintings more interactive and make sure they served as storytelling
tools in a home for polyhandicapped adults.
Finally, we continued our efforts to engage the next generation and local community in our
mission through our Kids4Kids Programme, our Corporate Social Responsibility Programme and
some local events such as Celebrate Childhood or the American International Club of Geneva
Thanksgiving Dinner.
As we move forward to 2018 and beyond, we are proud of what we have accomplished in 2017
and excited about the future. We remain very grateful to the energetic team for their
commitment with all projects. Our deepest gratitude and admiration go to the artists for their
talent, dedication and enthusiasm.

LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT
Our mission: brightening lives
Clinical environment in any type of healthcare centre can provoke fear and disarray among patients and
residents. Our vision is a world in which illness, accidents and aging become a less traumatic and
fearful experience thanks to an institution’s reassuring and welcoming atmosphere.
We use music and art to improve healing and promote well-being, in social and medical institutions
where children or adults spend time away from home.
Our impact: increasing well-being
Over 650 scientific publications and years of experience have shown that the environment has a huge
impact on patients’ recovery and wellbeing. Through our paintings we help to:
Our methodology: bespoke projects
Our team of artists paint therapeutic murals based on the principles of art therapy and evidence-
based design in hospitals, special needs institutions, orphanages, psychiatric centres and nursing
homes. This improves the well-being of the patients, residents, families and staff.
We always work in close collaboration with the staff of the chosen institution to create a project fully
adapted to their needs. The result is a tailored-made project achieved in a quick, efficient and cost-
effective manner.
Brighten and improve working conditions (reported by 100% of staff): a welcoming
environment has a positive influence on the treatment of patients and wellbeing of the staff
(their motivation is increased, there is less running and shouting).
Reduce anxiety (reported by 89% of patients, families and staff): a soothing atmosphere
brings comfort to patients and their families (patients are less agitated, children cry less).
Encourage interaction (reported by 96% of staff) and improve communication (reported
by 91% of families): caregivers use the murals as a storytelling tool to engage with the
patients, communicate, stimulate, orient, and explain any planned activities (children are
distracted during treatments, older patients are stimulated).

“The project makes a significant contribution to create a pleasant atmosphere in our hospital, in which
patients, family members and staff feel a sense of well-being. The children, families and we ourselves
delight every day in your beautiful murals! They are a true gem in our children’s hospital.”

“The murals create a reassuring environment, which reduces the anxiety of the patients and allows them to forget for a moment the reason of their disarray, as a sort of magic thought, these murals are a vector of
well-being. We found that the paintings on the walls encourages conversations and interaction, exerting a positive ambience also on the caregivers.
The transformation of the Day Care Centre helps everyone feel less stressed.”

are particularly pleased with one mural where a group of giraffes, pictured side by side as in a film sequence,
are drinking radiocontrast agent and illustrate the contrast agent's journey through the body. This always

fear. Soft colours create a soothing atmosphere
while murals bring smiles to children and adults
alike with their humour and tenderness.

“It is proven by psychologists that the murals reduce the anxiety of the children, but they also help the parents
a lot. Hospitals are not pleasant places for anyone. (...) If you are placing an IV in a child or you need to give
them a test that scares them, it helps a lot to distract them with the paintings on the walls.”

Engagement Service and Action (MYP)
Young students created welcoming messages for refugees.
"I want to make the children's lives lighten up" said Oliver (Year 7).
Further we transformed pillars at La Grande Boissière Campus so that they become an interactive and educational
canvas for the kids arousing curiosity and imagination.
We have been engaging students as part of their Service in Action programmes for 3 years.
Through this programme, children and adolescents develop their creativity, team spirit and empathy byreflecting on what being hospitalised and then creating tools (activity booklets, door signs, etc.) to brighten thelives of patients/residents of social and medical institutions. The programme takes them from the initialreflection to implementation in local institutions. This Kids4Kids programme has been received with greatenthusiasm, and will continue in 2018!
To honour and thank the students we organised ‘Anouk Awards’ in presence of their art teachers and thedirectors of the various beneficiary institutions (Clair Bois-Chambésy, Hospice général and Fondation Officiellede la Jeunesse).

“Both parents and nurses report that the music programme is used daily over many months with each child and always has the

Judith Wieland, Head Nurse at University Children Hospital, Zurich
This Music Listening Programme was created with Dr. Petra Kern, music therapist, in 2012. It has been used inthe Paediatric Rehabilitation Centre of the Children’s Hospital in Zurich since 2013 for patients with severephysical and mental disabilities (such as severe cerebral palsy or trauma).
Nurses use the programme to calm the patients during
pain or other troubled episodes, for example dystonia,
muscle spasms, general pain. It is also used to help
patients fall asleep during wakeful nights, and to get up
in the morning, so as not to miss their physical therapy
sessions.
Parents welcome the programme and look forward to
using it with their children. It provides an enjoyable
activity to share, and can be structured into the day and
helps to relieve the feeling of powerlessness.

CORPORATE SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY
Trafigura employees raced the 180km circumference of Lake Leman
during Cyclotour. The money raised was matched by Trafigura
Foundation. The funds allowed us to create murals and create a sense of
welcome in the largest refugee centre in Switzerland (see Hospice
général, Geneva, p. 8).
La Vaudoise co-sponsored two projects towards the well-being of
hospitalised children in the town and institution of their choosing (see
Inselspital, Bern, p. 7 and p. 15).

We work with companies to create tailor-made programmes fitting their goals.
We organise Community Days for companies: these fun and purposeful
days focus on empathy and creativity and allow employees to produce art
which complements our therapeutic murals in local medical institutions,
and has a positive impact on patients’ recovery and well-being.
“I liked very much painting with colours. It was relaxing and I was happy with my result. I hope that the pictures will help to adorn hospitals and bring the children some colour and joy.”
“Thanks, I can imagine that these small things can really make a difference, I was happy to participate!”

We believe in engaging local communities to create social impact through art.
How Anouk Foundation fits into the community
We create community-engaged art: working
directly with the community we create tailor-
made projects in close collaboration with the
artists, the staff (doctors, nurses, educators) and
the patients.
We have 9 years’ experience working with 75
local institutions all over Europe; we build
strong partnerships bringing together healthcare
institutions, academic institutions, schools,
community centres, artists and local
communities, to work together creatively on
common goals, mobilise action, develop
solutions and bring about positive impact.
Celebrating Childhood
Engaging the local community
Our Celebrate Childhood event took place on the 8th of March in Geneva.
All proceeds went towards two upcoming local projects in a children's emergency home in collaboration
with Fondation Officielle de la Jeunesse; and at an Accomodation Centre for refugees, in partnership
with Hospice général.
This year the American International Club of Geneva invited us to their Thanksgiving Dinner and soirée
and chose Anouk Foundation as a recipient for their silent auction. We are extremely grateful for this
opportunity to present our work to the AIC members and the funds they raised to support our local
projects.
