The school motto is “We Care”. Our belief is that we need to develop a broad range of skills to prepare our students for life. We believe that the following are essential:

Lifelong learners

Able to communicate in different languages

Good Digital Citizens

Cognitively prepared for complex tasks

Politically, culturally and socially aware The focus is on providing learning opportunities that will allow students to achieve their potential. This is done in a caring environment that respects the rights of all members and recognises that children are our prime consideration. Baldivis is transitioning from a semi-rural community to a large Urban School (759 students enrolled at the end of 2017) located 45 kilometres from Perth. In the last seven years, the population of the district has changed from rural small scale farming activities to more intensive land use and urbanisation. This brings new and exciting challenges for the school as it grows.

Greenleas Estate, Baldivis Parks, One71 Estate, Edge, Chase, Baldivis North and other sub divisions are growing rapidly – the developments on the eastern side of Baldivis Road will ensure that enrolments will steadily increase. Steady enrolments, while putting pressure on the infrastructure of our school, have been satisfactorily managed with a welcoming and inclusive attitude dominant within the school culture. Baldivis Primary School has a rich history serving the local community since 1924. The present site was established with a building program that began in 1979. Since that date further infrastructure has been added with the latest permanent buildings completed in 2011. Numerous Transportable classes have been added to cater for the growth in student numbers. Our programs are enhanced through collaboration with allied health professionals including school support staff, School Psychologist, School Nurse, Speech and Occupational Therapists. Specialist programs in Physical Education, Visual Arts, Music, German, Science and Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden Project are part of the students’ learning program. Technology is a key feature of the school embedded across all learning areas.

The school ethos of ‘We Care’ is innate in the values of the school. In our ever changing world the social and emotional well-being needs of our students is a priority and is demonstrated through mindfulness programs, community events and inclusivity. We highly value our relations with our wider and culturally rich community. The School Board meets regularly to monitor and review the Business Plan. The Parent and Citizens Association is an active part of the school community. The parent body continues to provide funding for the provision of additional school facilities and academic resources for all students. As an Independent Public School, Baldivis Primary School continues to build on our traditions and grow together with our community. ICSEA: (Index of Community social disadvantage) The average school ICSEA is 1000. Baldivis Primary School has an ICSEA of 995. In August 2017, Mr Reece Whitby our local MP invited the Minister of Education the Honourable Ms Sue Ellery to accompany him on a visit to our school. Mr Whitby had previously attended our technologies evening for parents and was keen for the minister to see the program in action. She was able to observe our students using recently purchased IPads. The IPads were purchased as part of the government funding for schools. They visited Mrs Richardson’s pre-primary classroom where Mr Bickley and some of our Year 6 students were engaged in peer tutoring. The students were engaged in a variety of rotational activities. The minister was impressed by what she saw. The minister also met with our German Language teacher Ms Helen Kuehs who introduced her to our recent winner of the Side by Side competition in which we won prizes at a state level.

A key initiative in 2017 was to ensure that Baldivis Primary School was well placed to provide both staff and

students the skills they required for success in learning for Digital Technologies and STEM.

At the beginning of 2017 we had the wireless infill updated. This provided infrastructure for an extra 16+

WAPs (Wireless Access Points) for the school to use wireless technology such as iPads. We purchased a

MDM (Mobile Device Management) system, Zuludesk, to manage our exiting iPads and the 40 extra iPads

we added to the school. With the Technologies curriculum implementation in 2018, we focussed several

professional learning sessions in school to inform staff of the new curriculum and reporting requirements of

the two new subjects: Digital technologies, and Design and Technologies. Baldivis PS hosted the southern

region Design and Technologies professional learning and an Apple PL.

Key staff were identified as ‘Lead Teachers’ and provided professional learning opportunities to implement

across the school. Several staff attended PL at Apple after hours, learning about the integration of iPads

and various educational apps. We ran termly STEM Challenge Nights where parents and students were

invited to our Big Red Shed to engage in a fun STEM challenge, promoting the importance of STEM and

technologies education to our parent community. A focus on girls in technology was supported with

incursions by Robogals (coding robots) and a mums and daughters coding night.

We created links with the local secondary college; taking students across to engage in a coding session. A

$40 000 grant from the new government allowed us to update our technology equipment with a focus on

lower school technology. We purchased several robots/coding equipment, iPad trolleys and iPads, STEM

equipment allowing students to engage in problem solving activities. We had successful year with a strong

focus on staff professional development.

Our highly successful German Languages program continues to be recognised throughout the state. Students from years one to six learn German through a variety of ways including puppetry, music and drama. The children are fortunate have Ms Helen Kuehs as their teacher. She is actively involved in the German Language teachers’ community. Ms Kuehs is president of the Teachers’ Association of German in WA (TAGWA) and vice-president of the Modern Languages Teachers’ Association of WA (MLTAWA). She represents our school at many professional learning events in Western Australia and interstate and presents on various topics including Coding in the Languages Classroom and The Kitchen Garden and Language Learning. Ms Kuehs is an excellent advocate for the Languages learning area and was actively involved in the Languages in the Mainstream project funded by the Office of Multicultural Interests. Ms Kuehs has been on the Teacher Development School SIDE team developing resources and professional learning for teachers to assist in the implementation of the new K-10 Western Australian Curriculum: Languages. Many languages teachers also come to watch Ms Kuehs work to benefit from her expertise. She has supervised prac teachers from the LEAP program run by the Department of Education. Ms Kuehs has also been involved in supporting the Baldivis Cell schools establish their Languages programs in preparation for the mandated implementation of Year 3 languages classes in 2018.

As part of Languages Week 2017 Baldivs Primary School students participated in the Side By Side Competition and won state prizes. Students had to demonstrate their ability to hold a conversation in German for a set amount of time and make it sound as natural as possible. Students were presented with their prizes and a school trophy at the official ceremony at the Office of Multicultural Interests. Students were also congratulated on their results by the Minister of Education, Ms Sue Ellery.

Baldivis Primary School hosted the German Primary Day Out this year and 300 students from various primary schools participated in the activity day themed Draussen im Garten (Outside in the Garden). Using the school kitchen garden and the Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL) approach students rotated through a variety of tasks learning about insects, plants, food, growing food, gardening and much more, all in German.

There was a high participation rate in the annual DAS German Exam and our students scored highly in the primary category.

Year five students participated in the interschool event Kino an der Uni (Cinema at UWA) where they viewed a German children’s film, with English subtitles, followed by activities at the UWA campus. This was a very successful event with positive feedback from students and parents.

The German breakfast is always a highlight at the end of the year with the top 30 German language students invited to attend.

Annual participation in the Harmony Day and NAIDOC celebrations develops inclusivity, tolerance and strengthens intercultural understandings and is an important part of our Languages program.

The use of technology has a high priority in the Languages lessons. The German program integrates STEM subjects with Language learning, in particular, by coding with Bee Bots, Blue Bots and Scratch, and using the school kitchen garden. Baldivis Primary School uses LanguageNut, an internet based language learning program, to complement face to face lessons. Ipads are used for online dictionaries and research, and creating eBooks and short films to enhance learning.

Parents again strongly supported our Learning Journey Evening during Term 3 2017. All classrooms were open displaying student work. Students were the tour directors of their learning taking parents, family and friends on a journey that took them to their own classrooms, the Art & Music Area, to the German room to experience a different culture, the Undercover Area where they were able to demonstrate the physical education skill.. They also had the opportunity to view engaging displays and some exciting Science experiments. Staff and students embraced the Learning Journey. Students selected and planned what they would show their visitors practicing their oral language skills and answering the many questions that were posed to them. Parents enjoyed the opportunity to look at their children’s work in every learning area. Parent feedback was extremely positive both to their children and the school. Many classroom had parents complete “Two Stars and A Wish” for their child. Examples of feedback are: “My daughter was so proud to be able to show me all her work.” “It was great to see all my son’s work displayed. You often don’t see what they do in Music, Art, German and Science at home.” “What a great way to see your child’s work. It was great to hear my son describe what he did when we were looking at his work.” For the first time Baldivis PS organised a Colour Fun Run. The weather was a bit cold and windy but we still had a great day. It was fantastic to see so many children and adults covered in colour and having so much fun. Many parents supported the school by coming along and volunteering their time for the whole day. We were fortunate to have George and Aaron from Singleton Volunteer Bush Fire Brigade there all day and keeping the water flowing on the slippery slide and squirting anyone that came into their range even the principal Ms O’Neill. The school raised close to $7000.00. A huge thanks goes to our Physical Education teacher Janelle Marangon and office staff Karen Deane & Jodie Billingham for all their hard work before and on the day to make this event so successful.

In 2017 the 41ST Baldivis Country Fair was held. For the first time the Baldivis Country Fair was held on the school grounds. The Fair is our flagship fundraising event for the year. It is the major fund raiser for the school and a terrific promotion of the Baldivis Community. School Staff members traditionally support the P&C by giving up a day to help at the Fair. It was a bumper Fair with amusement rides, side show alley, show bags, food trucks, free kids activities and live entertainment all day including Super Heroes on stage. Our P&C do an amazing job. The Baldivis Auction is an annual fundraising event run the P&C in conjunction our school patron and auctioneer Mr Paul Lyons. The wide community bring goods to be auctioned and the school gets a small percentage of the sale price. It is a great community event that people from all over WA attend.

The Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Gardens continued to develop during 2017.With the community support of Bunnings Port Kennedy, who donated seeds, raised garden beds and a small greenhouse, our students planted, nurtured, and harvested a plentiful supply of vegetable and some fruit. Parents helped in the cleaning up of the gardens, after the summer holiday; preparing the gardens for students for the new year. The SAKG program is a vehicle to teach the entire curriculum from mathematics to literacy, technology to science. The German language program with the guidance of Frau Kuehs, focused the gardens as an integrated part of their language learning with the lower primary year groups. The SAKG works hand in hand with our Big Red Shed cooking program. Students learned about cooking skills through the cycle of planting to cooking. Even though our SAKG program is focused on Year 4 and 5 students, many other year groups took advantage of the amazing gardens and kitchen, to develop their curriculum skills and knowledge. 2017 has built the foundations for a more focused program in 2018, with the view to creating an outside area of the Big Red Shed for classes to enjoy and use.

In recognition of the many varied areas of talent and interest our students, we at Baldivis Primary School offer an number of opportunities for students to achieve and have success. One of these areas is our school choir. Students in years five and six are given the opportunity to join the choir to primarily learn to perform and sing in both unison and harmony but also to work cooperatively as a team. The choir consists of approximately 100 students and they rehearse once a week during school hours under the direction of our specialist music teacher. Within the choir there are opportunities for students sing solo and as part of small group, become part of the instrumental accompaniment, dance and act.

The choir performs at a number of venues and event each year such as Harmony Week, NAIDOC Week, Book Week, ANZAC ceremony, South Metropolitan Sing Fest, Baldivis Community Fair and WAGSMS.

Our school choir has been performing at the WA Government Schools Concert Series since 1998. As a school we have been committed to ensuring government schools in our area have the opportunity to perform at WAGSMS concerts. Our administration team recognises the benefits for students and our school community in having students work towards performing at a high level for WAGSMS concerts and as such have been running the concerts at Mandurah Performing Arts Centre for the past 10 years. Our music specialist teacher has worked with the WAGSMS committee to help produce a video to encourage public schools to get involved in these concerts to give their own students the opportunity to perform these high level concerts. The quality of our Baldivis Primary School Choir’s performances has been applauded and recognised by not only our school community but by the broader community and WAGSMS committee members.

2017 saw the beginning of our Combined Schools Concert Band. Our music specialist, Diana Triscari recognised the need to begin a concert band to give relevance for SIMS students and external music students to practise and learn to play their instruments. In collaboration with Clare McLaughlin from Tuart Rise Primary School and Ken Ellis, a parent at Baldivis Primary, Mrs Triscari established the band to assist the students with developing their skills and music for performances. Rehearsals take place at Baldivis Primary School after school on Tuesday afternoons.

The band began in fourth term with 21 year five and six students playing woodwind, brass, percussion and keyboard. After only eight rehearsals they performed for captivated audiences at Tuart Rise and Baldivis Primary schools and at an afternoon tea for parents and friends. Such was the success of the band that year seven students from Baldivis Secondary College and Mother Teresa have opted to continue playing with our Combined Schools Band as leaders for younger students. 2018 will see the development of the band to include approximately thirty year five students in term three and the possibility of students from other primary schools in the area. Plans for 2018 include performances for all primary schools in our area, an evening concert for families and a performance at the Baldivis retirement home.

Moorditij Koolongkas In 2017 the “Moorditij Koolongkas” cultural group was formed which included all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students at Baldivis Primary School. This group was formed to support and develop relationships between these students who range in age from kindergarten up to year 6 across the school. Through the establishment of this group, parents, families and local Aboriginal elders were welcomed into our school to share cultural knowledge with our students. With the support of two staff members, the group helped to plan and run events on NAIDOC day which included cooking kangaroo stew and damper for students to taste test and cultural face painting. At the Baldivis Country Fair, the group performed the Acknowledgement to Country on stage which was a first for our school. The group also travelled to Rockingham as a group to attend the official NAIDOC celebrations where they shared in singing and listened to local elders speak about the importance of NAIDOC celebrations. This group will continue to meet regularly in 2018 to plan for upcoming cultural events and to help develop cultural awareness across our school.

Kapa Haka – Te Roopū Whakatururanga The school’s Kapa Haka group continued to gain momentum. Lead by parents it teaches the Maori culture, beliefs and way of life to our students. They meet once a week after school, at the school and perform at school and community events. Originally the our Kapa Haka group only included students who attend Baldivis PS but in 2017 the group expanded to include other students in the Baldivis Network of Schools. The group put on an amazing performance at WAGSMS and continues to grow both popularity and performances.

Other Groups The school’s facilities are also used by other local cultural groups these including the Cook Island Community Dance and Drumming group and the Samoan Penina Dance Group. The school hosted the following cultural incursions during 2017: Salaka – African Drum Beat Salaka means “to share” in the Ga language of Ghana This is a dynamic show that brought the magical sounds of Africa alive in a brilliant performance of drumming, dancing and singing. Salaka is about sharing the traditional African culture through music and sharing the unique stories behind the dances. Students got a hands on experience with the instruments and were involved in dancing and singing.

Wadumbah Dance Group The Wadumbah Dance Group came to Baldivis PS as part of our NAIDOC celebrations. They shared the Noongar culture with us our school community. They performed different dances dealing with different parts of Noongar country, Dreaming stories, animals and traditions. These include funny animal dances like the Emu dance, which depicts the story of this long legged bird. The men really look like the Emu when they morph and change into that creature. The didgeridoo player matches the movements of the Emu with deep rumblings and high-pitched squawks. Students and staff had the opportunity to be part of the singing and dancing. Papa Galak – German Puppet Performance Our students were able to partake in this international performance. It was a wonderful performance of puppetry, music, dance and comedy using the German Language. The students were highly involved in the performance with the music and puppets.

The Lonely Dino was the culmination of a book project between Baldivis Primary School and Kiddyinks. Students from a year 4 and 5 class were invited to write a book based on the theme of ‘resilience’. Produced as part of Serenity Press’s Kiddyinks program, Bailey McDougall’s story was chosen from over forty submitted and Anderson Gray was chosen to illustrate the story after her drawing ability impressed the Serenity Press team. Serenity Press’ co-director, Monique Mulligan was captivated with Bailey’s story: ‘Aimed at four to eight year olds, this story made me smile and is written from the heart’, “it’s a funny story about a lonely dinosaur who wants someone to help her build a ladder, but even when everyone says no, she doesn’t give up. It has a lovely message about resilience, which is what we were looking for. Wanting to give the students a real life experience, the school organised a book launch in collaboration with Rockingham City Library. Over 100 adults and the two classes of students attended the book launch where Bailey recited the book and students were presented with certificates and displayed their stories. The Lonely Dino was launched in paper and hard back and also presented at the Rockingham Book Fair as part of Serenity Press’s stand later in the year. The school sold over 100 copies of the book.

Our ninety Year 6 students went to Forrest Edge Camp Waroona for a 3 day camp in July. The camp offered a variety of activities and challenges that required the students develop new skills and call on old skills to complete challenges successfully. On their return they were tired, excited and happy campers. The children spoke enthusiastically about their 3 day camp and the challenges and team building activities they had participated in while at camp. The weather was favourable (most of the time) and added to their enthusiasm to make the most of the opportunities and activities. Enthusiastic staff members once again supported our students at camp and we thank them for their organisation and participation. Many Primary Schools no longer take children on camp as the staff aren’t willing to give up their own time – we are very lucky that the staff here work extra hard to provide the students with so many exceptional experiences.

As the year came to an end and Christmas was on the horizon our Defence Children within the school prepared care packages to send to our troops. The packages will hopefully reach the troops in time for Christmas in the Middle East, East Timor and The Solomon Islands. Within the packages we also remembered to send special packages to the Australian Explosive Detection Dogs. We wrote letters and messages thanking them for all their dedication and bravery. A stamped addressed envelope was also packed so hopefully we will get some replies!

The School Development Plan 2017 included strategic and operational plans which outlined student achievement improvement targets and specified areas for improvement and how the improvement would be measured. It included both academic and non-academic focus areas. Judgements were made about the effectiveness of key strategies with staff involved in reviewing plans, targets and data. Operational plans detailed implementation strategies in key operational areas with the whole staff involved in ongoing self-assessment of these strategies as they applied to different areas of the school. Learning Area plans were structured around a twelve month cycle of review, development and implementation. Staff worked collaboratively in teams to review curriculum areas and used classroom and whole school data and assessment to review student achievements and performance. In second semester all operational and strategic plans were reviewed at staff meetings and also with the school Board to enable a review of the effectiveness of the schools performance in preparation for the 2016 planning cycle. Evidence based reflection and feedback from staff including curriculum leaders provided clear direction and continuity for the Focus Areas the new plan.
