2017 Holiday Programs on 88.9WCVE Richmond Public Radio Throughout December, join our classical, jazz, blues, world and folk music hosts for a wide range of holiday pieces, day and night, some familiar and some less so, but all pleasantly situated for the season. Here are some our special broadcasts: With Heart and Voice Featuring choral and organ music of longing, expectation, and anticipation for the Advent journey. December 3 at 10 pm With Heart and Voice More music of preparation and anticipation during Advent with host Peter DuBois. December 10 at 10 pm Candles Burning Brightly Host Mindy Ratner explores Hanukkah through foods, traditional activities, and plenty of music. December 11 at 8 pm Hanukkah Lights 2017 All-new Hanukkah stories hosted by Susan Stamberg and Murray Horwitz. A perennial NPR favorite! December 11 at 9 pm Slavic Wonders Christmas with the Rose Ensemble A stunning celebration of the season. Hear soaring soprano lines to the signature Slavic sound of rumbling basses. December 17 at 8 pm A Mexican Baroque Christmas with the Rose Ensemble Two centuries of Christmas dances and songs from the great cathedrals of Puebla and Mexico City. December 17 at 9 pm With Heart and Voice Peter DuBois shares great choral and organ music in anticipation of Christmas. December 17 at 10 pm Central Virginia Wind Symphony’s Holiday Program, directed by WCVE’s own Mike Goldberg In its 13th season, the ensemble is composed of the most talented musicians from 25 area high schools. Daniel. December 20 at 1 pm Handel’s Messiah Host George Maida brings you the annual airing of Handel’s masterpiece on the life of Christ. December 22 at 10 pm Christmassy, Wintery Sound of Swing Seasonal pieces not frequently heard, even around the holidays, from host Steve Clark. December 23 at 12 pm Holiday World Music Show Songs depicting the Sephardic Jewish experience, Cajun Christmas Carols, and a Ukrainian Bell Carol. Plus, hear “Eight Little Candles,” sung in Hebrew by NPR’s Ari Shapiro, as well as what constituted a Christmas song by Mexican composer Esqivel, a Latin Spike Jones. Just for kicks, we'll check out Holiday Dub Carols.
