HOMESCHOOL OR CYBER?
Many families have found the Pennsylvania Cyber Charter School to be
the best of all choices, with their child safe at home, peace of mind from
standards-based courses taught by state-certified teachers, and parental
involvement.
CARLY
When the Ickes family moved to Altoona, they
considered homeschooling, mainly because Carly
had a bad experience in her last classroom school,
damaging her self-confidence and academic
progress. However, traditional homeschooling
“was out of the question because my husband and
I couldn’t give Carly our undivided attention,” Mrs.
Ickes said.
“The first year in PA Cyber’s blended classes was
a little challenging, but we pushed through. This
year in virtual classes she has done extremely well. She enjoys her teachers
and all the friends she has made. They helped her regain the confidence she
lost through the bad experience.”
LAURA
As she engaged in competitive horse riding, Laura Collins became frustrated
that few after-school daylight hours remained in which to ride. She begged
her mom, Jean, to homeschool her so she would have more time to work with
horses.
16
Pennsylvania
“I entertained the idea but was afraid I couldn’t
do a good job,” Jean said. It seemed the best
option for Laura to continue her education
while cultivating her passion. “I chose the school
because it had been around the longest of online
schools that I knew of.”
Laura enrolled in sixth grade. It has proven a good
choice, both academically and career-wise.
LUKAS AND NATHAN
In 2010, when Lukas and Nathan
were nationally ranked on the
BMX racing circuit, Mike and Jen
Halahan realized attending a
classroom school was not going
to work for their boys. To compete
on the national level requires
extensive travel time.
“PA Cyber has been amazing for
us,” said Mike, their dad, mentor
and de facto manager. “The boys
are doing well in school, and their
riding and industry involvement
continues to progress. PA Cyber
affords them the flexibility to
meet their demanding schedule
of travel and performances.”
PA Cyber enjoyed a close working relationship with homeschool families when
it opened in 2000, and still does today. Visit www.pacyber.org

Encouraging a love of learning in bright students
The Johns Hopkins Center for Talented Youth knows
bright kids. CTY has more than 35 years of experience
challenging students with advanced academic talent
to reach their full potential and pursue their love
of learning through our summer, online, and family
programs.
CTY offers online accelerated, honors, AP, and college
level courses taught by expert instructors. CTY’s Online Programs are open to
academically advanced students in grades pre-K through 12 who meet admissions
requirements. Our challenging courses include mathematics, science, computer
science, world languages, critical reading, and writing. They’re designed to deepen
knowledge, strengthen critical-thinking and problem-solving skills, and prepare
students for future learning. Enrichment courses are also offered in such subjects
as cryptography, chess, competitive math, music theory, and web design.
Our expert instructors understand the needs of bright students. Each student
works under the guidance of an instructor who gives feedback, encouragement,
and evaluation via email, phone, web-based discussion forums, and virtual
classrooms. The course offers students homework, assessments, and evaluations
to help instructors gauge what and how they are learning and where they
might need extra challenge or help. “Our instructors provide feedback at every
step of the way,” explains
Joseph Cutrone, Ph.D., CTY
senior program manager for
mathematics. “If students
don’t understand the answer
they got to a math problem or
are confused about a concept,
their instructor is always
available for an email or a
private tutoring session.”

The brightest students are best served when given the chance to learn without
limits. By taking courses designed around their advanced academic abilities—
not their age—students can truly explore their interests at a pace that fits their
abilities.
Math, computer science, and most science courses are offered in an individually
paced format that provides the flexibility students need to pursue their
coursework while balancing busy schedules. Writing, world languages, and AP
courses other than mathematics are offered in a session-based format that often
allows students to interact with online peers, says Katherine Thurlow, CTY program
manager for critical reading and grammar.
CTY Online students form a community of learners from around the world. In
session-based courses, students often have opportunities to connect with other
students who share their interests in online classrooms and through written
discussions. “They have classmates with whom they can discuss their opinions and
ideas,” Thurlow says. “They learn from each other.”
CTY is accredited for students in grades K-12 by the Middle States Association of
Colleges and Schools.
Go to cty.jhu.edu/start for more information about enrolling your bright student in CTY.

The Golisano Children’s Museum of Naples has a variety of classes
available for families looking to supplement their home school curricu-
lum. These hands-on programs foster curiosity and discovery in support
of what students are learning at home. Weekly classes are offered for
children ages 5 to 12. Class meets on Tuesdays from 10:00 am to 11:00
am for children in grades K-2 and from 11:15 am to 12:15 pm for children
in grades 3-6. Each month features a four week unit of study. Past units
have focused on the topics of bugs and botany, circuitry, and the basics of
science. While learning about bugs children dissected a grasshopper and
discovered that its internal anatomy is similar to ours. When studying cir-
cuitry, children designed their own working flashlight. While studying the
basics of science, children learned why precise measurements help lead to
accurate results. In future units, children will study simple machines, their
senses, and engineering. While themes are all science based, we incorpo-
rate age appropriate literacy, math, geography, and history skills into the
lessons.
For learners under five, we feature our Mini-Wonders series of work-
shops. These workshops provide our toddler friends a safe space to
experience what it’s like being in a group learning environment. On the
second Thursday of the month join us for Toddler-rific, a morning of tod-
dler themed activities included with your admission. All other Thursdays,
the workshop meets from 10:15 to 11:00 am for art, literacy, science, and/
or math lessons. Past workshops featured Van Gogh inspired sunflower
painting, mathematical growing patterns from Marsupial Sue Presents
The Runaway Pancake, and outer-space themed Yoga. Future workshops
include sculptural self-portraits, tinkering with engineering skills, and
working together to make a robot. For information regarding upcoming
programs, workshops, and pricing please visit www.cmon.org.

Spanish by the Month is an innovative, year-long Spanish curriculum designed for home educators who want to capitalize on the tremendous benefits of their children learning the Spanish language. This new curriculum breaks through the barrier of having to know Spanish in order to teach it. Its genius yet simple design empowers parents to teach Spanish to their children with no prior knowledge. The thematic design makes it conducive to speaking Spanish during day-to-day activities right from the start!
The series of twelve lesson plan books and CDs are organized by month and designed to teach children ages 2-10. Begin with the current month’s lesson and continue on. There is minimal preparation thanks to step-by-step instructions, numerous resources and pronunciation and teaching CDs.
Hear what people are saying about Spanish by the Month curriculum:
“As a mom who has never studied Spanish, I can’t believe how easy it is to use. The lesson plans tell me exactly what to do and the CDs do most of the teaching for me! My children and I LOVE the games, songs, colorful visuals and fun activities. I get to learn with my children and we are already speaking Spanish during our daily activities together because the vocabulary is so practical. This curriculum has made Spanish come alive for our family!”
Carrie Homeschool Parent, Minnesota
“Thank you for mailing Spanish In May to our five locations. The teachers love them and our children are really learning a lot! We especially like the pronunciation of the Spanish words in the books. I think a lot of people pronounce words incorrectly and this helps! Thank you for this awesome curriculum and we are looking forward to receiving all 12 months!”
