Jennifer Struck, right, answers student questions at theASTEM event.
ASTEM Overview:
Amy Gookin is full of good ideas. She works as a Research Associate inthe Regulatory Science Group at DuPont Pioneer, and she's also veryactive in Pioneer's Young Professional Network. Last year, she started aSTEM Committee with the goal of outreach. On July 22, Gookin and the STEM Committee hosted the company's firstASTEM Festival. The event brought in high school students with an interestand aptitude for STEM, specifically, students involved in Iowa StateUniversity's precollegiate Science Bound program. She then rallied 45other employees to volunteer. Around 50 Des Moines students signed up tolearn more about what Pioneer STEM professionals do each day. The day's itinerary included hearing from Wendy Srnic, a Research Directorat Pioneer about the importance of STEM education and careers, touringthe automated greenhouse and insectary, eating lunch with Pioneermentors, visiting with Talent Acquisition, participating in a GMO Safety andAcceptance panel, and ending the day touring through Global Breeding andMarker Technologies, Corn Transformation and visiting the Tech Rodeo(featuring interactive stations including robotic programming, softwaredebugging, Raspberry Pi and 3D visualization using Oculus Rift.) Employment Trends and Tips:
"What makes a personstand out [from anotherSTEM candidate] is hisor her interpersonalskills. We trust theuniversities are doingtheir job on the academicside, but the STEMdegree student whocommunicates well withother people and takeson leadership roles ishighly valued" "Right now, we are
searching for people who have a plant science and field background, andwho also have technology and statistics training. With the ever increasingfocus on data, being able to analyze information is a key strength."

Insights from the lunch table: "Anyone can do well in STEM. We're just kids who work hard and roll withthe punches. Everything in school matters. You have to try hard [on being aSTEM standout at her school]."
Esther Ubandigbo, Roosevelt High School "Find a mentor. I was passionate about science and was fortunate to havea lot of supportive mentors. I want these students to have that, too."
Amy Gookin, Research Associate and STEM Committee Organizer "If you have an interest in engineering, start by thinking about how yousolve problems. Be able to talk someone through your method. You canlearn the technology part in school."
Allison Tegtmeier, Continuous Improvement Project Manager "We were chosen for Science Bound in 7th grade. A board looks at you anddecides if you're ready for these types of projects and experiences. Ibelieve anyone could do this, if they work hard enough."
Kimberly De Avila, East High School "G.P.A. is not the first thing we consider. We look for problem solvers, goodthinking skills, and a solid background in science and math. We needpeople who can apply what they learn. "
Tom Lade, Manager of Automation Engineering "I know I want to be an engineer. I know I want to stay in Iowa and be bymy family. Doing well in STEM will help me accomplish these things."
Andres CortezCastillo, North High School "Stick with your goals. A lot of people have a passion in high school, butthey don't follow through. It was a teacher who got me interested, and I hadto balance sports and school." [Boston played basketball at SimpsonCollege]

STEM and Statistics
Huey and Weber Take onStats and Teens
Dr. Maryanne Huey, left front, and Dr. Wendy Huey, top right, spent a week in August withover 20 students and teachers who were all interested in Probability and Statistics.
201516 Iowa STEMEvaluation Report
Each year, an interuniversity consortium from ISU,UI and UNI conduct an independent assessment ofIowa STEM. Each institution takes one of threeparts of the assessment.
The first part, the teacher/leader survey, focuses onhow an educator implements the ScaleUp programin a classroom or informal setting, increasing theawareness of STEM.
The other two tasks focus on students, using IowaTesting Assessment scores in mathematics, science and reading to gauge achievement and astudent questionnaire to measure for increasedinterest in STEM education or careers.
The following graphs show progress betweenScaleUp Students and the general Iowa studentpopulations.

Data is everywhere, and there is more reason than ever to teach studentshow to interpret and use that information. In June, K12 classroom teachersspent two weeks learning how to better integrate probability and statisticsinto their current curriculum.
As a followup, in August, those teachers put their lessons to the test onover 20 high school students. Teachers received a stipend for their time andstudents attended the camp for free. The cost was covered by an NSFgrant that Drake's Dr. Maryanne Huey and Central's Dr. Wendy Webersecured three years ago.
With school starting, the best of the lessons will be integrated throughoutthe participating Iowa schools. "We hope this class deepens teachingcontent, helps teachers gain confidence in statistics, and introduces newcurricular experiences to students," said Huey.
Dr. Huey and Dr. Weber have both coordinated exhibits for SC STEMFestivals. Look for them again this year!
