great and most holy day of Pentecost ten days after Christ’s ascension into heaven.

As with Israel, so it is with the new Is-rael, the Church. The high feast days of Passover (Pascha) and Pentecost sanc-tify time and the life of the Church, no longer with an eye to the Incarnation but with an eye to the second coming of Christ in power and great glory, at the last trumpet, who will send out his an-gels to gather his elect from the four winds, from one end of heaven to the other to enter God’s eternal rest. (Mt. 24:30-31; Heb. 3-4) It is this harvesting of souls at the end of the age to enter God’s eternal rest that is prefigured in the third great feast of Is-rael, the Feast of the Tabernacles (or Booths), when the Israelites dwelt for a week in booths (tents) to remember that their ancestors dwelt in tents when God brought them out of Egypt; and to re-mind them that here on earth they have no lasting city but are spiritually always on the move. In the first two great feasts of Passover and Pentecost the people always had to return home after the festal celebration

to tend the fields. In this last great feast, all the crops have been gathered in and the planting and cultivating for next’s year crops com-pleted. The people can rest and enjoy the festal reli-gious observance without the anxiety of work still to be done back home; to use Christ’s last words on the cross, “It is finished.”(John 19:30) A sign of this feast’s prefig-uring of eternal things is the fact that the week-long feast finishes on the eighth day: “On the first day there shall be a holy convocation. For seven days you shall offer whole burnt offerings to the Lord. Then on the eighth day you shall have a holy convo-cation, and you shall offer whole burnt offerings to the Lord. It is the final day of the festival for you, and you shall do no work on it.” (Lev. 23:36) As the Orthodox Study Bible explains: “That eighth day was a type of the new creation - the day that never ends - the day when all our labors and trials are over. It is the establishment of the eter-nal kingdom of God in its fullness. All is completed. All is renewed. All is at rest. The true New World has begun. It is the fulfillment of the work of Christ for us.” (page 153, footnote to 23:39, para. 2). Saint John the Evangelist corroborates this in his gospel with the first and sec-ond appearances of Jesus to his disciples when they were gathered together for worship on the

be healed?”

(John 5:6)

financially. How much more does this statement apply to the spiritual sicknesses of a community’s mem-bership? As Jesus said to the para-lytic of thirty-eight years and says to each of us, “Do you want to be healed?” (John 5:6) Let me tend to my own soul, feed-ing and watering it with tough love and humility, and weeding out the illnesses of body and soul that we may, before Christ’s return, become imitators of all the saints who in every generation have pleased God and be amongst those of whom Je-sus spoke: “Do you not say, ‘There are yet four months, then comes the harvest?’ I tell you, lift up your eyes and see how the fields are already white for harvest.” (John 4:35)

Lord’s day: “Then, the same day at eve-ning, being the first day of the week … Jesus came and stood in their midst … And again after eight days … Jesus came … and stood in their midst …” (20:19, 26) The first fruits of this final harvesting of souls at the end of the age (Rev. 14:13-16) is commemorated in the first Sunday after Pentecost, better known as the Sun-day of All Saints. The Church’s function until Christ’s second coming is bearing fruit for the kingdom of God. In every generation there have been those who have perfected their love for God and paid the ultimate price for it, martyrdom. After the prototypical martyr Christ, these are the first fruits in every genera-tion of souls harvested for the kingdom and they are reigning with Christ even now. (Rev. 20:4-6) As a community of the Church, let us concentrate on the matters of the Church that matter and let us start with our-selves. As potential first-fruits, the best way each of us can accomplish this is first to tend to my own soul. The minis-tries of the Church function better when I manage and strive to overcome my own peculiar dysfunctions. If I need to apply biblical principles in my daily life, do it. If I need counseling, get it. If I need medications, take them. When idio-syncrasies clash, do what procures the peace and not what exalts my power and control. Each church community always has one or two who tell the priest they are God-sent to save the parish and end up doing the opposite. The Church is at no loss for all of us who want to go out and minister to the world while it is each of us individually that is sick and in need of care. Every-one applies “charity begins at home”

Lena Stathakis Tzavaras, of Kennett Square, Pa., formally of Signal Mountain, died on April 9, 2017. She was born on July 28,1920, to Pete and Stavroula Stathakis. She was the seventh of their nine children. Lena was a mischievous child and her high spirited nature made it easy for her to make friends throughout her life. She worked in her father's diner during World War II while her brothers went to war. She met and married Gus Tzavaras in Little Rock in 1947 and moved to Chattanooga. They owned the Greystone Apartments and eventually the Volunteer Luncheon-ette in the Volunteer Building which they had for many years until they retired in 1970. She worked full time in the lunch-eonette as well as raising their two chil-dren, Paula and Peter, which in the 1950's was unusual in that women did not work outside of the home. Lena and Gus were active members of the Greek Orthodox Church where Lena served as choir director for over 50 years as well as being very active in the Greek Ladies Philoptochos Society. She never hesitated to do anything the church needed to be done. She always greeted newcomers from out of town to the church and many of them became a part of our family, as she called them her "adopted children".

She lived with her daughter, son-in-law; and one and only grandchild, Zoe, from when she was two who Lena took great pleasure in “spoiling rotten.” Zoe’s friends took to calling her the Greek name for grandmother, “Yia-yia” and enjoyed her delicious baked goods, colorful language, and joking manner. Even after her affectionately termed kakó korítsi (“bad girl”) became a “damn Yan-kee”, Lena and Zoe enjoyed a close rela-tionship including frequent phone calls, visits to Chattanooga, and some special vacations such as in 1999 when Lena, Joel, Paula and Zoe visited Ellis Island, where Lena’s parents had immigrated through from Greece in the late 1800s. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband; and her siblings, Mary, Nick, George, Louis, Bill and Sam. She is sur-vived by her daughter, Paula (Joel) Rind, of Kennett Square, Pa.; her son, Peter (Sharon) Tzavaras, of Morgantown, W. Va.; her granddaughter, Zoe Rind (Dennis Ryan), of New York, N.Y.; her sister, Janie Terzolas, of Monroe, La.; and her brother, Ted Stathakis, of Salt Lake City, Utah; as well as several nieces and neph-ews. Lena's family would like to thank Kendal at Longwood and Neighborhood Hospice for their compassionate care dur-ing her illness.

Thanks to everyone who assisted in our recent Rummage Sale. It's success was made possible by your hard work. As stated in the General Assembly, we are severely challenged with needed mainte-nance throughout the church. We as a council will strive to make improvements as dollars are available. I elected at the first of the year to take care of the grass cutting in an effort to save this mainte-nance expense. If anyone is willing to as-sist please contact me.

From Parish Council President; John Corum The sound buffers will be installed in the Fellowship Hall within the next 30 days. If you are available to assist in their installation please contact me ([email protected]) or Joey Berk-ley ([email protected].)

The Greek for a Night has tentatively been scheduled for October 28th. Up-dates to follow. Thank you to all for your continued support of our church.

Thank you very much to those who have responded to our request to send in your stewardship cards as a sign of your com-mitment to Christ and His church here in Chattanooga for 2017! In the Old Tes-tament Law, the people of God were de-pended upon for the upkeep of the wor-ship setting and life of the people. With-out the support of you the people, these necessities could not be maintained. We pray that all of us see the bigger picture of what Christ is doing, even in spite of us sometimes, and support Him in the context of his church here in Chatta-nooga. To those of you who have not as yet sent in your cards, please do so. Com-mit also to worship as often as possible and to offer your time and talents for the betterment of this your community. Also, thank you very much to those who contributed to the Friends of the Me-tropolis in 2016. It is my prayer that you will find it in your hearts to support this stewardship ministry as well, however much you may contribute - no amount is too small. His Eminence has no one to look to but his parishes. Please attend to it now so it is out of the way.

On a sunny Saturday, Yiayia’s Attic Rummage Sale and Sunday School Bake Sale came to an end the last weekend in April. It successfully raised over $1300.00 for the church. The Rummage Sale Committee would like to extend it’s thanks to all who helped make this event a success, filled with fellowship, love, devotion and care.

Thank you to all who gave their time, treasure and talent. There were so many families who donated, some anonymously. A very special thank you to Mrs. Ann Fox and to Mr. Pedro Campa for pricing most of the little treasures. Thank you to Mrs. Theodora Sayne for donating a beautiful collection of Cookie Jars and trinkets that many people admired and acquired. Thank you to Tom and Sandy Allen for a large collection of rare books that everyone enjoyed. Thank you to all the women and men who donated their valuable time and fellowship throughout this process, notably the Rice family, the Taylor family, the Sundheim family, the Kosmidis family, the Zotos family, the

Pagnani’s, the Gulas family, Melony Dunsmore and Mrs. Stephanie Richter, Ron and Connie Lee and many others.

Alice Pavelski, from 3rd Grade Sunday School, volunteered to run the table and sell baked goods. She made cookies and cupcakes for it and she would like to thank the church for allowing this spe-cial blessing. Thank you to Mrs. Jessica Bikas, Mrs. Barbara Harmon, Mrs. Donna Mousourakis and Mrs. Chrisi Hopper for also donating their time and talent to the Sunday School Bake Sale. It was super yummy and enjoyed by many! It also helped raise $187.00 for Sunday School!

Mr. Joey Berkley and Dr. Mike Mena had a running bet on who could sell the tire. The winner won some cookies. Dr. Mena won! We had several couples come and tour the church as well during and after the Rummage Sale, which is a wonderful thing to share our beautiful and unique faith with the Chattanooga Community. Thank you to Mr. Nick Harmon, Mr. Ron Lee, Mr. Austin Mar-tin, Mrs. Theodora Rice and her son Amon, Mr. Anthony Pavelski and many others who volunteered that day. The Rummage Sale Committee would also like to thank Father Stavros Ballas and Mr. John Corum for your guidance and leadership throughout this process. It was a blessing to work with you both.

ANNUNCIATION GREEK ORTHODOX

CHURCH OF CHATTANOOGA

What man is he that desireth life, and loveth many days, that he may see good? Keep thy tongue from evil, and thy lips from speaking guile. Depart from evil, and do good; seek peace, and pursue it. The eyes of the LORD are upon the righteous, and his ears are open unto their cry. The face of the LORD is against them that do evil, to cut off the remembrance of them from the earth. The righteous cry, and the LORD heareth, and delivereth them out of all their troubles. The LORD is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart; and saveth such as be of a contrite spirit. Many are the afflictions of the righteous: but the LORD delivereth him out of them all. He keepeth all his bones: not one of them is broken. Evil shall slay the wicked: and they that hate the righteous shall be desolate. The LORD redeemeth the soul of his servants: and none of them that trust in him shall be desolate.

I will bless the LORD at all times: his praise shall continually be in my mouth. My soul shall make her boast in the LORD: the humble shall hear thereof, and be glad. O magnify the LORD with me, and let us exalt his name together. I sought the LORD, and he heard me, and delivered me from all my fears. They looked unto him, and were lightened: and their faces were not ashamed. This poor man cried, and the LORD heard him, and saved him out of all his troubles. The angel of the LORD encampeth round about them that fear him, and delivereth them.

O taste and see that the LORD is good: blessed is the man that trusteth in him. O fear the LORD, ye his saints: for there is no want to them that fear him. The young lions do lack, and suffer hunger: but they that seek the LORD shall not want any good thing. Come, ye children, hearken unto me: I will teach you the fear of the LORD.
