We are very fortunate to have a friend in our sport like Kate Simonds. Her love for and dedication to our sport continue to surface throughout the full breadth of retriever field trials. Kate has presented to the National Retriever Derby Club a truly unique trophy to be awarded to the winner for their possession and proper stewardship until the following year’s competition. At that time, the next National Derby Champion will accept custody for the subsequent year. And so, a new tradition is underway. Now on to the trophy itself. This trophy is comprised of the traditional look of a solid sterling silver, sculpted, retriever jumping through the “D.” The two-tiered base is a granite finish, which is a new look. Together the presentation is a blending of new and tradition, much like the event itself. The retriever was sculpted by Carol Bunyon of Stowe, VT and Brays Island, SC. The entire trophy was designed and constructed by Ferro Jewelers of New York and Stowe,VT.

Dedication of the Inaugural Runningof the National Derby Championship

As the inception of the National Derby Championship developed and took it’s first breath it became clear that the true pioneers of this event were not any of us, but rather those that came before us. Those that introduced us to this compelling sport and showed us the path to take. With this in mind, we would like to dedicate this inaugural event to two individuals. The first being Pete Simonds, who never stopped working for the structure, order, and positive advancement of the sport. For a half century, he set an agenda to keep the sport on a path forward while always holding order and excellence in the highest regard. He worked diligently for 35 years toward that objective. Pete chaired the RAC, was a member of the OFA Board of Directors, until he retired his seat he was the only chair that the Delegates Committee for Field Trials and Hunting Tests had ever had. All of these things were on his desk for more than 30 years. Along with that he was Secretary/Treasurer for the National Retriever Club, president of the National Retriever Club, and a diligent worker and board member of the Labrador Retriever Club. The second inspiration for this project was Swede Anderson. For more than five decades, he worked very hard at competing in the sport, being a respected judge throughout the country, judged two nationals, was the gun captain for the mountain time zone, and a fine ambassador for the spirit and camaraderie that this sport depends on. These things were no easy task from the remoteness of the Rocky Mountains, but he always found a way. As the sun was setting on Swede’s time with all of us, he did not focus on himself and his achievements. Instead he was focused on the future of the health of retriever field trials and particularly the reinvigoration of the derby. He made requests of the Retriever News and the Retriever Advisory Committee a number of times to address these issues. I’m sure that by now you all have an understanding why this inaugural event has a dual dedication. Two men that dedicated themselves to our sport for a half century. Could you choose between them? We certainly couldn’t.

A Word from the Presidentof the National Retriever Derby Club

On behalf of the Board of Directors and the formulation committee, I take great pleasure in welcoming all of you to Sedalia, Missouri for the very first National Derby Championship. It has been approximately 1-1/2 years since the inception of this event. The reality of this event in such a brief time is the result of a lot of hard work by many people, the incredible generosity of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Hayden (our landowners), and the tremendous cooperation of the American Kennel Club and Doug Ljungren.

The original thoughts were of a fast-moving, head-to-head competition of Derby dogs to determine and crown a singular national champion that would earn a recordable title. All of that would be consistent with the other national championships in our sport. Because travel with dogs can be difficult we have made an attempt to locate it as centrally as possible, to minimize inconvenience for the greatest number possible. We hoped that it would encourage more people to participate in retriever field trials, there is some early evidence that it has. Perhaps this will reinvigorate an entry level community to grow in our sport.

The bonus to all of this has been the cooperative effort between the amateurs and professionals to do something together to promote the future health of this sport. The assistance of the PRTA in this endeavor has been of great value, for now and into the future. Mike Lardy and Wayne Curtis in particular have immersed themselves in the thought, strategy,and execution to an extent that deserves all of our thanks. The amateurs that are listed in this catalog are all familiar names and have given freely of themselves in an effort to reach the goal line.

I must recognize a few in particular. John Stracka has given of himself in ways that defy convention for human investment in a hobby. My very good friend of many decades, Dennis Bath, has once again strapped on the gloves and answered the bell to go a few rounds with our traditionally very supportive sponsors. Loren and Carol Morehouse, along with their Kansas City Retriever Club, have put in a Herculean effort to insure the success of this inaugural event. Tina Styan and her team at Retriever News have worked very hard to pick up all the balls that I have dropped and keep this train on the tracks. I must once again thank Bob and Barbara Hayden for displaying their support and love for our sport in so

many ways. I would be remiss if I did not thank my wife Martha for her ongoing support in many ways and her continued tolerance of me.

Now it is time to look forward to the event itself. We have a premier facility, as fine a panel of judges as our sport could offer, and a very fine field of young dogs. All of this should provide for a very entertaining event. Sit back, fasten your seatbelt, and enjoy the competition. We trust that you will be as enthusiastic as we are. Enjoy your stay here in Sedalia, appreciate the grounds, and try to not overlook the excitement and anticipation of these fine young teams of dogs and handlers.

National Derby Championship Rotation Order

The starting dog’s number will be drawn at the General Meeting the day previous to the beginning of the trial. Each rotation segment is determined by dividing the number of contestant dogs listed in the catalog by a figure of four (4). The rotation numbers will be announced prior to adjourning the General Meeting. Beginning with the starting dog selected during the meeting, this division determines the dogs that start each successive rotation, where a rotation may include more than one series. If any of the numbers are not listed in the callbacks, the next higher number will start. Unequal divisions shall be rounded up to nearest whole number. By example, dog 20 starts a 75-dog trial. The rotational division would be;75 divided by 4 = 19 dogs in the rotation where the rotation would beExample: 75 Actual (#) ______Dogs Entered / 4 = 19: Dogs Entered / 4 = ______

4th – 2 (= 58+19) 4th – _____Following the fourth rotation, the rotation returns to the starting dog of the trial (20), excluding that dog, and beginning with dog 21, or the first working dog after 21, five (5) working dogs (dogs listed on the callbacks) are counted and the sixth dog would start the fifth rotation.Rotation for the remaining series of the trial will be, beginning with the dog that started the previous series and excluding that dog, counting five working dogs and the sixth dog would start.No dog will start any completed series more than once. If the rotation landed on a dog that had previously started a completed series, that dog would be skipped unless all remaining dogs had already started a series and then the dog that was the first to start a series of the remaining dogs in the trial would be starting dog. The Field Trial Marshal will administer and interpret this procedure in conjunction with the Field Trial Committee.

Field Trial Etiquette1. Please stay in the area designated by the officials.2. While dogs are being tested, either on land or in the water, please

silence cell phone use, refrain from loud talking or other noises, also from unnecessary motions; all may be distracting and may seriously interfere with the dog work.

3. Do not applaud until the dog has completed the test, and is leaving the line.

4. Please cooperate with those responsible for the proper conduct of this championship stake, especially with respect to the handling of traffic.

5. Please show your appreciation for the hospitality extended to us. Help keep the grounds clean and NO SMOKING outside your vehicle.

6. The National Retriever Derby Club promotes and expects ethical behavior by all participants at our annual event. When training, attending the trial itself, or attending the many activities around the trial, always think first of sportsmanship, etiquette and the good of the sport. The showcasing of the finest our sport has to offer is the true reason we have assembled. That standard should never be violated or compromised.

YOUR COOPERATION IS APPRECIATEDThis is the Inaugural National Derby Championship Trial. It is conducted by the National Retriever Derby Club, Inc., under license from the American Kennel Club, Inc.Qualification for the 2017 NRDC Championship will be five or more Derby points, as recorded by Entry Express and verified by Retriever News. (5 points for 1st place, 3 points for 2nd place, 2 points for 3rd place and 1 point for 4th place.) The qualification period is recorded as all Derby points earned while under age two, which qualify for the Retriever News National Derby List. Any dog under age two on the start date of the first series of the event with the requisite five points verified may enter the event.

The Championship event will be managed such that we are completing the trial within five days in no less than eight series and not more than ten series. National Derby Championship Stake includes at least eight tests or series equally divided between those on land and those on water. At this trial the judges will place only the winning dog, which is thereby entitled to the official designation, “National Derby Champion of 2017.”
