Life as a Sec 4/5 Student
Challenges
• Did not do well for Sec 3 EOY. Feel demoralised and unmotivated.
• Topics in each subject are getting more difficult
How to Overcome
• Revisit Sec 3 work during revision in Term 1. Schedule one or two consultations with teachers to iron out problems and rebuild confidence.
• In class, remain focused and ensure that at least 80% of lesson is captured. Ask questions in class to clarify doubts to prevent snowball effect. Keep up with homework. Practice makes perfect.
Life as a Sec 4/5 Student
Challenges
• Coming home late after CCA. Feeling too fatigued and have insufficient time for homework.
• Exams are coming. Too many subjects to study. Too many topics for each subject to study. Don’t know where to start.
How to Overcome
• Prioritise which homework needs to be submitted first. Make use of time after lunch, before CCA to complete “due soon” homework with CCA mates/classmates.
• Revising 1hr a day from day 1 is the best habit to have. 3 weeks prior to MYE and Prelims, draw up a timetable. Allocate TWO sessions of 2hrs studying daily and ONE rest day.
Life as a Sec 4/5 Student
Challenges
• Did not do well for MYE/Prelims. Stressed out that will not do well for O Levels.
• Simply no motivation to start studying even till Term 3.
How to Overcome
• Recognise and accept the problem (did not study hard; brain block; sick; etc.) Start a new study plan by using a time table. The important thing is to feel “in control”. Speak with FT/YH if necessary.
• Work on goal setting. Which school/course is preferred? What is the EMB3 requirement? Remember that improvement in results need to be slow and steady. No one can shave 10 points off in 3 weeks! Sacrificing 3 months to study now = comfort for the next 3 decades!
