Punography Of The Month:She was only a whisky-maker, but heloved her still.
Greetings from the Home Office of the National Slovak Society. As summerwinds down this month, the children willbe heading back to the sounds of theschool bells each morning. Wishing all ofour children a very successful school year. Today as I walked into my office, it
was decorated like it was Christmas withlittle lights and banners that read “HappyBirthday”. Linda Strom and Pam Blumstayed after work yesterday to decorateand help make my birthday special. Ihave been blessed to work with such nicepeople over the years, and I appreciateeach and every person very much. Thismonth we celebrate Labor Day on the 4th which signals the end of summer. Wealso celebrate Grandparent’s Day on the10th. Speaking of grandparents, I wantto congratulate Sue and Rudy Ondrejcoon the birth of their newest grandson,Vincent Montalbano, son of Regina andTim. Vincent was born on July 18th, afterthe deadline for the August issue. Also,we just learned that congratulations arein order for Chris and Bob Katricak onthe birth of grandson Chase PatrickBerner, son of Jenny and Josh. Chasewas born August 2nd. All parents, grand-parents, and babies are doing well. Twonew members for the Society! Also thismonth, we will be holding our 6th Annual Septemberfest at the HomeOffice in McMurray, PA. There will be entertainment, vendors and of coursegreat tasting Slovak Food. It will be heldbetween 11 a.m. and 4 p.m. Parking willbe available at our neighbor, Jordan TaxOffice’ s parking lot next door to ourbuilding. Thanks to Bill Linnert, who isalso a member of the society, for the useof his parking lot.
2017 Financial OutlookWe are more than half way through the
year and our steady growth continues in2017. Our model for controlled growth hascontinued to provide strong profits in 2017.People often ask me how is business, andmy response is very good. I go on to explainto them that we have to be careful as tohow much annuity premium we bring ineach year as it affects our surplus and sol-vency ratios. In addition, commissions toour agents who represent us are paid fromour surplus and affect the bottom line ofprofits each year. Speaking of agents, oursales force throughout the country hasgrown to over 1,600 and we are now li-censed in 18 states. Our investment port-folio continues to perform very well, due to the diligent work of our investmentcommittee in conjunction with our assetmanager, AQS. We work hard to make sureour investments are safe and will protectour member’s assets as we provide a fairreturn in interest on their monies.

tional News, you will find a page adver-tising an opportunity for our generalmembership to join us on the agent in-centive trip to Aruba, April 7th-14th,2018. September is Life Insurance AwarenessMonthSeptember is Life Insurance Aware
ness Month (LIAM). This national edu-cation campaign, which is coordinatedby the nonprofit organization Life Happens, is designed to get consumersto take stock of their life insuranceneeds and protect their loved ones withproper insurance planning. Danica Patrick, professional race car
driver and athlete, is the spokespersonfor Life Insurance Awareness Month forthe second year, spreading the mes-sage of financial fitness. She is themost successful LIAM spokesperson todate, and she is back for a second yearto take the campaign to new heights.
Be Fit—With Your Finances, TooHer message is one that will resonate
with everyone: “As a race car driver andathlete, being fit is important to me.But fitness extends to all parts of yourlife, including your finances. And whenit comes to being financially fit, gettinglife insurance is key.” And she speaks candidly about get-
ting life insurance, “If you’ve procrasti-nated getting coverage because youdon’t know where to start, ask for help—that’s what I did. Ask a friend for a re-ferral or give an insurance agent oradvisor a call. Then do what I do. Writeit down on your calendar or to-do list.”Then call your local NSS representativeor Joe Elliott in the Home Office formore information.

As the Beneficiary of an Annuity/IRA – Now What?Every day when someone passes away our claim department gets questions like
this and more. So what is a beneficiary to do? Download and review our claim packet that can be
found on our website: www.nsslife.org under annuities/forms. The packet outlines claim options and tells what forms or information is needed
to process the claim. (i.e.: certified death claim, original certificate/policy or a lostpolicy form). NSS always recommends consulting with your tax advisor to determinethe tax consequences for your particular situation. We do not provide tax or legal advice. Depending on the product (IRA, Roth IRA, non-qualified annuity) there maybe some subtle differences to the beneficiary. If the beneficiary is the spouse of the decedent, they can treat the deceased’s
account as their own, by putting their name on the account and naming their ownbeneficiary; or they can roll over the funds into their own account. Generally speaking, here is a quick guide to the options available to a spouse and to other beneficiaries:
Spouse is beneficiary Non-spouse beneficiary1. Rollover to spouse’s account/continuation 1. Close account by the end of the 5th year2. Select lifetime payments 2. Select lifetime payments3. Lump sum 3. Lump sum
If the beneficiary is a non-person (i.e.: estate, trust, etc.) the proceeds must be paid in a lump sum.
Taxes and Annuities - Generally speaking There are some general guidelines regarding taxes and annuities. As a rule the
taxes on annuities, IRAs and Roth IRAs are all different. On IRAs – all withdrawalsare taxable. On Roth IRAs the principal is returned first and any interest is paid outlast, for qualified withdrawals. To be qualified; the account must be at least fiveyears old and the person must be age 59½ or older. For qualified Roth IRA with-drawals, all interest would be tax-free. On non-qualified annuities; interest alwayscomes out first and is taxable. Any principal is paid out last and is considered a re-turn of capital and not taxed. The federal government (IRS) may charge a 10% earlywithdrawal penalty for monies taken out of an account prior to age 59½. Some ex-ceptions may apply. As always NSS assumes no responsibility for tax or legal advice. You should always consult with your professional advisor to see how it effects yourparticular situation.

Hello, my name is Fran Blazek. Iam the Marketing Representative forNSS Life Pre-Need Insurance inPennsylvania and Ohio for the lastsix years. My job consists of visitingFuneral Homes to promote and explain our Pre-need Insuranceproducts. I have the opportunity to
meet the compassionate and loving people who are there atthe time of need when someone loses a loved one. I sign upthe funeral home to use NSS as a Pre-need provider for theirfamilies. On a personal note I have been married for 22 years to an
amazing man and my soul mate, Dave Blazek. We love to travel, golf, and have date nights at the movies. But my greatest joyin life is spending time with our 5 children, their spouses, and 8 grandchildren. I have been blessed beyond words.

Fraternalist of the Year Award
Jill Grover, 2017 Fraternalist of the Year receives a plaque from BillKnoll, President of Assembly 123 at her recognition dinner.
Family Does MatterIt is essential that life insurance agents believe in the
company they represent and in the policies they present, and that policy holders have confidence in their agents! I am so fortunate to represent such a reputable life insurance company as NSS Life, with all members of anadministration and staff who truly support and assist usagents. Agents and policy holders can count on receivingany information they request and answers to questionsthey ask with a simple phone call to the number 1-800-488-1890, the last four digits representing the year NSSLife began, 1890! I believe 127 years of experiencespeaks for itself. The NSS theme "Family Matters" is significant for
policy holders and agents alike. Family members call me when they are blessed with a new child and wish topurchase a "20 Year Payment Whole Life Policy" like thatof their other children. They appreciate that the youngerthe age, the less expensive, and that the rate remains thesame throughout those 20 years. They like the generous"guaranteed" cash values and illustrated "current" projected dividend values. Most parents or grandparentsare proud and pleased to initiate a policy with all of theseadvantages, but in addition provides contests to encour-age participation and monetary prizes for Art, Poetry, Photography, and Christmas Ornaments. Finally, NSS provides financial help to college bound members with the$500.00 per year scholarship for each offour years for a total of $2000.00. In addition, NSS Life offers many other policies including whole life, term, and annuities for young and adult alike. Pictured are a few of the many Northwest-ern PA families who have joined NSS and, with me as their agent found that theFamily Matters indeed.
The Weaver FamilyL-R Colton, Hayden, Sandy (mother) Kolee, and John (father). All three children re-ceived PVR Scholarships. Both Sandy &John liked the policies enough to purchasethem for themselves.

Congratulations to Alisa Christensen
Assembly 586 congratulates another brainy PVR Scholarship recipient this month! Alisa Lane Christensen graduated fromBartlett High School in the top 25 of her graduating class of600+ students, achieving a 4.67 average with straight A’s allfour years! In addition to the NSS PVR, Alisa earned scholarships from
Illinois State University, where she will attend, another fromLombard IL Citizens Police Academy, one from her high school’sFine Arts Boosters and another from the elementary school sheattended. As we said a few months back, Alisa was employed asa math instructor at Mathnasium while still in high school. Here’s a little fact about Alisa’s great-grandparents, Anna
Antol, nee Placko and George Antol, who were both born inKošariská in the former Austro-Hungarian Empire, now Slovakia. Both were baptized by Pavol Štefánik, Lutheran pastor and fatherof Slovakia's national hero, Milan Rastislav Štefánik. Štefánik organized and led resistance to Austro-Hungary and ImperialGermany during World War I as a General of the French Armyand was on his way to becoming the first president of the newly-formed republic of Czechoslovakia at war’s end when the Italianmilitary plane he was piloting homeward crashed under mysteri-ous circumstances. Everyone aboard was killed. The village of Košariská now houses a very popular museum
in the hero’s childhood home, the parsonage in front of theLutheran church. Alisa’s great-grandma used to tell her familyabout attending the hero’s funeral in her village as a teenagerand also the dedication of his memorial before she made thetrip to America.
Rhianna, Alisa and Tyler; Christensen sisters: Future (we’repretty confident,) Present and Past PVR Scholarship Recipients!
