awarded its fi rst 8(a) contract for $173,000.00. The following
year, the company was awarded additional projects totaling
over $1.5 M with Fort Huachuca. They are currently
in negotiations with several fi rms for government
contracting partnerships.
“Advanced thought and planning is imperative to business success. It is also important to know what to look for and expect when going through the SDVOSB and 8(a) application processes. We found the AZSBDC/PTAC assistance critical to our success.” —Edward O. Willis

When Juan Castillo, Sr. came to this country almost 20
years ago, he got a job as a welder making $7 per hour.
Thirteen years later, he approached his son with his dream
to start his own business. After being in business for a
while, JC Welding contacted the SBDC for assistance. The
owners wanted to grow. They had many opportunities to
obtain government work, but had no idea where or how to
begin to obtain these types of contracts. The SBDC helped
with their applications to get bids and to make contact with
government agencies. The owner, Juan Castillo, stated,
“Vanessa and Randy gave us the knowledge, organization,
and inspiration we needed to be more successful.”

Valley Imaging Solutions recognized they needed
assistance in order to grow their business. After the
downsizing of Ft. Huachuca and the loss of federal
procurement dollars, they reached out to the Cochise
SBDC for assistance in retention, sales, marketing, and
local contracts. The SBDC’s assistance with marketing
directed the company to reconnect their sales force to
local infl uencers that could make purchasing decisions.
Through the SBDC help in sales methods and planning, the
company acquired several prepaid contracts and new sales
from Ft. Huachuca Hospital, the Copper Queen Hospital,

Page Garage Door Services, LLC began the process to
acquire an existing business in the fall of 2014. The efforts
to obtain initial capital fi nancing were long and frustrating
so they contacted the Coconino SBDC. Jim Hunter helped
them develop a fi nancial forecast for the company and
encouraged them to pursue fi nancing even though they
were ready to give up. In the fall of 2015 they were able to
complete the purchase of the business. At the end of 2016
the company is a three generation small business with
many government, industrial, commercial, and

Nick Tellez, owner, started as a young cook right out of

learning his craft and developing his skills as a cook in
a number of restaurants across the state of Arizona. In
2015 the owners of La Paloma approached Nick about
purchasing the restaurant. Nick immediately began
contacting the local banks and quickly realized that getting
fi nancing to purchase a restaurant was an uphill battle.
Nick was referred to the SBDC at Eastern Arizona College.

Terry and Lauri Town wanted a business where they could
trade in their corporate suits for shorts and fl ip-fl ops. One
of the biggest challenges at the start of the business was
putting together a business plan and their future projections.
From the recommendation of the branch manager and vice
president of their local bank, Terry and Lauri contacted the
SBDC. The SBDC counselors began looking at the existing
business fi nancials while working with the owners on putting
together their business plan. In 2016, the Towns received a
SBA loan and opened their business. They continue to work
with the SBDC on improved marketing ideas to help sustain
