When Juan Castillo, Sr. came to this country almost 20

years ago, he got a job as a welder making $7 per hour.

Thirteen years later, he approached his son with his dream

to start his own business. After being in business for a

while, JC Welding contacted the SBDC for assistance. The

owners wanted to grow. They had many opportunities to

obtain government work, but had no idea where or how to

begin to obtain these types of contracts. The SBDC helped

with their applications to get bids and to make contact with

government agencies. The owner, Juan Castillo, stated,

“Vanessa and Randy gave us the knowledge, organization,

and inspiration we needed to be more successful.”

Valley Imaging Solutions recognized they needed

assistance in order to grow their business. After the

downsizing of Ft. Huachuca and the loss of federal

procurement dollars, they reached out to the Cochise

SBDC for assistance in retention, sales, marketing, and

local contracts. The SBDC’s assistance with marketing

directed the company to reconnect their sales force to

local infl uencers that could make purchasing decisions.

Through the SBDC help in sales methods and planning, the

company acquired several prepaid contracts and new sales

from Ft. Huachuca Hospital, the Copper Queen Hospital,

and the Wellness Clinic totaling $470,000.

Jeff and Jennifer Herbert founded Superstition Meadery

in 2012 with the mission to reintroduce the world’s oldest

fermented beverage to mankind. Superstition evolved after

several years of recipe development on the home brewer

scale. Jeff attended the prestigious Siebel Institute’s course,

“How to Start a Brewery.” Through the unique creativity of

their handcrafted beverages, they were named a Top 100

Brewer in the World. The guidance from the SBDC mentors

has directly been responsible for Superstition Meadery

completing their production facility, which will permit

Superstition Meadery to achieve its production goals, create

new jobs, and continue to draw craft beverage enthusiasts

from around the world to Arizona.
