Let us draw near to God with a sincere heart and with the full assurance that faith brings, having our hearts sprinkled to cleanse us from a guilty conscience and having our bodies washed with pure water. Let us hold un-swervingly to the hope we profess, for he who promised is faithful.

The Following is an Excerpt from “An Easter Com-panion” by Dr. Rick Farmer

Why did Jesus die?

There are different levels on which to answer this question. I will try to focus on at least three of them,

as we attempt to explore the purpose behind the most meaningful death that ever occurred in human history. First of all, Jesus died because he was fully human, and all human beings face the reality of death. On the surface this may seem rather simplistic to say. Howev-

er, the humanity of Jesus is central to the true meaning of His death. Without the full-fledged reality of the death of a human being from Nazareth the entire point and purpose of Easter is lost to us. From the very be-ginning of the proclamation of the Gospel these words

were included: “And being found in human form, he humbled himself, becoming obedient to death, yes, the death of the cross.” It seems that the humanity of Je-sus and his death on the Cross are so closely linked

that they cannot be separated. The meaning of Jesus’ death is intimately linked to the meaning of his hu-manity. It is obvious to say that Jesus could die be-cause humans die. It is more difficult to comprehend

that this particular human was actually born for the express purpose of dying. Whereas all

of humanity tends to chase im-mortality, Jesus took his first breath with death as the goal. We are born to live. He was born to die. We are birthed into

the world to prepare ourselves to learn and grow and create children and find vocations and discover love. He was born on this earth to empty himself of

dignity, relinquish claims to wealth and family, and activate his enemies toward his own de-mise. We are born to create a

future and a legacy. He was born to find Himself abandoned by His Father, his friends, and life itself. Our heart longs to be filled with life. His heart

longed to empty itself of the last drop of life’s blood. His hu-manity is the very thing that makes salvation possible. His humanity is the very definition

of the fullness of His love.

There is little debate as to the

humanity of Jesus by those who knew him. Those things which are common to all humans were part of his life. Jesus is born from a woman’s womb (Luke

2:7, Luke 3:38f, Gal. 4:4); was tempted as all humans are (Heb. 4:15); grew as humans do (Luke 2:52); got thirsty and hungry (Jn. 19:28, Mat. 4:2);

experienced human emotions (Jn. 11:35); and slept and ate and danced and conversed and lived within the constraints of time and space as all humans

do (Jn. 1:14). There was no pretense to his humanity, there was actual reality and sub-

stance to his fully celebrated human existence. Jesus did not do a single thing in his life that did not point directly to-ward his humanity. Every limit

we have, he had. Every barrier we know, he experienced. Every pain we feel, he under-stands.

It is not his hu-manity

that causes us to doubt, but ra-

ther the claims to his divinity. For we struggle as

humans to make sense out of a God-man who leaned more heavily on his humanity than He did upon His Divinity. This makes no sense to us. After

all, if I am capable of running a 2 minute mile why I would ever settle for a 4 minute mile? If I can create food with a word, why grow it? If I can

grant eternal life to whomever I please, why allow death at all? These things make no sense to us. These things cause us to doubt that the Divine

could ever be fully human. Yet, without the humanity of Jesus, there is no possible way we can ever understand or grasp the Divine. Without the

humanity of Jesus, the Divine would remain a distant longing in our souls that can never con-

nect to our lives and our souls. We can only know, see and climb into the Divine Being be-cause of His humanity. Jesus’ birth as one of us marks the be-

ginning of the possibility of birth into the Divine. It is John who tells us: John 1:10 He was in the world, and though the world was made through him,

the world did not recognize him. 11He came to that which was his own, but his own did not receive him. 12Yet to all

who did receive him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become chil-dren of God— 13children born not of natural descent, nor of

human decision or a husband’s will, but born of God. 14The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of

the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.

Just as the Eternal Spirit be-comes fully human, those who are fully human are now capa-

ble of being United within the Eternal Spirit. It is the humanity of Jesus which opens this door. It is the humanity of Jesus that bridges the chasm between hu-

man and Divine. It is the hu-manity of Jesus that equips him for death, a death through which death is ultimately con-quered and life everlasting be-

comes a human possibility, yea, a human reality!

Education Minutes December 2016

Planned Christmas activities for Awana , children’s church, and for the Christmas Eve

service. Researching options for Children’s church curriculum. We will stay with Believe for an-

other cycle. The youth group went to the Columbus Zoo for the Wild Lights on Thursday, December

22nd. Youth group lock in on New Year’s Eve had 11 students in attendance. Amy reports that the mission trip will be the week of June 24th in Fort Wayne, Indiana.

Education Minutes January 23, 2017

The education team met on January 23rd. Members present were Nancy Betker, Amy Vaflor, Amy Washburn, and Wendy Petrie. Sunday school plans for the 5th Sunday were finalized. Nancy contacted people to speak about the various ministries at Trinity. Amy reports that the youth group will go to Fort Wayne for the Mission trip June 24-July 1. 3 new students from Tuesday night have started attending youth group. The youth group attended palace production of Mutts gone Nuts. VBS will be June 18-22, from 6:00-8:00 pm. The theme will be Sonrise National Park. Amy Vaflor reports that the nursery is going well. A cleaning day is being planned. The next meeting will be 7:30 on Monday, February 27th at Panera Bread. Respectfully Submitted,

OPERATIONS TEAM MEETING MINUTES JANUARY 9TH, 2017

Herb Klingel opened the meeting with prayer. Members present for the meeting were Sharon Davis, Chuck Blankenship, Jim Betker, Herb Klingel, and Chris Wilson. Also pre-sent were Sheryl Simmons, Jerry Gorby, Carolyn Green, and John & Jean Freshour. Overseer, Chris Wilson began the meeting asking each coordinator for their report.

Income for December was $29,335.66 and for 2016 was $ 360,724.24.

The annual financial audit for 2016 will take place in February.

Chris Wilson then asked for the financial report. Sheryl Simmons summarized the pages of the financial report and went over the encumbered fund balances explaining what had

been paid, what is still outstanding and discussing the intention of various funds and getting direction on how to process others.

The deficit in the Benevolence fund will be reset to zero as of January 1, 2017.

There was some discussion regarding the Christmas offering. The money will be used to send a check to the servicemen and college students who are members of Trinity Baptist Church. An announcement will be put in the bulletin requesting members (or their parent) that are college students or servicemen to contact the church office. The following individuals were listed as possible candidates:

Servicemen - Tim Davis, Zac Caldwell and Wes Blankenship

Students - Brock Petrie, Kayla Betker, Christian Vaflor, Jon Vaflor, Cassie Vaflor, Josh Farmer and Dominic Piacentini.

After funds are dispersed to the servicemen and students, any remaining funds will be given to Andrew Ryckman to use for the college ministry.

Sheryl suggested that Chris Wilson as Operations Overseer submit his name to be a signature on the checking account, replac-ing David McCartney. This action must appear on the Council minutes in order to proceed.

Chris Wilson then presented a process for Benevolence funds. After a brief discussion, the group approved the proposal and agreed that it should be taken to the Eldership and the Council. Herb Klingel closed the meeting in prayer. The next meeting is scheduled for Monday, February 6, 2017 at 6 PM. The operations team then met in executive session. Over these beginning months of 2017 I have been writing on the topic of Passion Week as we climb to-ward Easter once again. After three Advent Books it seemed time for a change of pace. Although Christmas season is probably my favorite topic to think about and write about, it is very easy to make the argument that Easter is even more important as we think about what it means to be Disciples of Jesus Christ. His death, burial, Resurrection and Ascension form the core of what we commonly call the Gospel of Jesus Christ. We do not exist if not for what Jesus did that first Passion week some 2 thousand years ago. For this reason I am trying to reflect on these events in a way that will add meaning to our celebration of Easter this year. I am writing on topics like: What is the meaning of the Cross? What does Peter’s denial teach us? What about Judas? Why did Jesus die on the Passover? Did the disciples really not expect the Resurrection? Why did God’s Son have to die? Can we know that the Resur-rection is an actual historical event? These are just some of the topics I will try to address. Just as with the Advent Books, all proceeds will go di-rectly toward Benevolence Funds. Thanks to Jim Bet-ker and few other guys most of you do not know, we raised around 3,000 dollars during out Golf Marathon in October, shared with Benevolence and Campus Ministry. This “Easter Companion” is simply the con-tinuation of an effort to continue to raise Benevolence Funds so as to diminish the need somewhat toward de-pending solely on your contributions to minister to the needy in our midst. I would very much appreciate it if you would invest in a copy of “An Easter Compan-ion”. A sample of what you will read will be in this month’s Newsletter. I pray it will add to your celebra-tion of Easter this year and that God will bless your investment as He continues to touch the lives of people through our Benevolence Fund here at Trinity Baptist Church. December was an exciting time at Awana. We learned about the Christmas story. Children were especially eager to share their thoughts on Jesus being born in a stable and the gifts that the wise men brought. We had our Christmas par-ty on December 20th. We made orna-ments and Christmas crafts. Everyone en-joyed Christmas cookies that Miss Susie’s mom made for us. We appreciate their thoughtfulness. Thanks also to Phil Har-bolt and Willis Thomas. They have been busy teaching the TNT members and some youth group members how to play the hand bells. We look forward to sharing their joyful noise with others. Thank you for your continued prayers for our chil-dren’s ministry.

Moderator, Dave McCartney, opened the meeting with scripture from Galatians 3:26-29 and offered prayer. Colleen McCartney moved to accept Minutes of the previous meeting as writ-ten; seconded by Mark Poling and approved by voice. The Financial Report is in the Tidings. Operations – Chuck Blankenship, Interim Overseer

One of the three boilers in the church building is out; repair has been ordered. Christian Center doors need to be unlocked during the Recovery Group meetings. The Parlor has been refurbished, using the Dasher Funds – new paint, carpet and fur-

niture. New ceiling tiles will replace those that are water damaged. Parking lots will be treated with brine this weekend. Issues being addressed: security for the staff; health department guidelines/

extermination. Disruptions in second service have been resolved. Programming – Colleen McCartney

Christmas for 77 children and 33 families will be distributed December 18th and De-cember 20th. Help is needed to wrap presents on December 14th at 10 a.m. Colleen expressed appreciation for the approximately $2700 donated for this project.

There will be one service at 10:45 a.m. on Christmas Day. Sunday school teachers are to decide if their classes are meeting and IF SO, will notify Sheryl so she can put it in the bulletin. Christmas Eve Service is at 7:00 p.m.

January 29, 2017, 5th Sunday will feature recognition of Sam Newell’s ordination and the new Elders plus the quarterly business meeting.

A general discussion was held as to how to best present to the congregation the use of the Thanksgiving and Christmas offerings so as to avoid any confusion in the future between those offerings and the staff Christmas love gift.

Elders – Phil Harbolt Discussed: Sam’s Local Church Ordination, review of the new constitution docu-

ment, and Christmas day service. Phil expressed his thanks to Willis Thomas for helping teach the Awana children how

to play the bells. He also commented on how nice the blinds look in the Christian Center, courtesy of the Dasher Funds and installation by the Men’s Brotherhood.

Dear Friends, Hello from COLD Budapest where even the Danube is frozen! We had a great last Budapest Christmas with our kids and although it was hard to see them saying goodbye to their childhood home as they left to return to school and jobs, we are so thankful that they support us in this decision to move back to Romania. Please pray like crazy as we travel to Bucharest this Friday for a week to begin looking for housing! We are asking the Lord to provide us with a home that we can afford that is near our national Cru office, 3 bedrooms, 2 baths, a small courtyard or at least a sunny terrace. We would very much like to move in to Bucharest asap--March 1???? Thank you for standing with us as we embark on Romania Take 2! Love, Dave and Shari

Eldership – Pastor Rick Farmer for Fritz Winegarner. Planned and participated in Sam Newell’s ordination service this morning. The issue of church security is being addressed by Operations. Setting goals for 2017.

Pastor Rick Farmer – Ministry updates Men’s Brotherhood – Phil Harbolt stated that their goal is to become better men

in Christ through their Saturday morning Bible study, family night dinners/fish fries, fishing ministry and work projects (Indiana Ave. house).

Financial counseling with Recovery Group – Craig Reynolds discussed the blessing of working with members of the Tuesday night group in helping them with finances, jobs, restarting their lives and the importance of showing love and encouragement.

Young adult/college student ministry – Andrew Ryckman gave an overview of the CCO ministry which calls college students to serve Jesus Christ with their entire lives and is de-signed to fit the MTC/OSUM campus. The basement of the Indiana Ave. house has been remodeled and hosts a disciple group preparing leaders for ministry inside and outside of the church. Several are going to the upcoming Jubilee. Phil Harbolt shared a report of projected monthly expenses: $23,933.28 income is needed for February plus $3500 for repayment of encumbered funds previously used. He assured us that every effort is being made to be good stewards of the church’s finances with the hope that we will be able to move forward with minis-try in the next few months.

Jim Betker reported that budget related giving for January (5 weeks) is at $26,000 and is a little ahead of the previous year, which he sees as a good sign. He continu-ally strives to be open and honest regarding all financial matters.

Moderator, Dave McCartney, opened the meeting with the 2017 scripture theme from He-brews 10:22-25 and offered prayer. Motion by Colleen McCartney to accept Minutes of the previous meeting as written; seconded by Mark Poling and approved by voice vote. The fi-nancial report will be in the next edition of the Tidings. Operations – Chris Wilson Repairs to the boiler will be completed soon. Looking into getting a new dishwasher for

Fellowship Hall, possibly through Whirlpool. Additional $145 staff love gift has been received. In the process of developing a listing of college students and servicemen for Christmas

offering disbursement. In order to address the issue of the Benevolence Fund deficit, Operations has proposed

guidelines for management of the fund. Motion by Chris to accept this proposal, to be effective January 25, 2017; seconded by Colleen and approved by voice vote. A copy of the proposed guidelines is on file with the Clerk and with Operations. See Chris for de-tails.

Motion by Chris that he be added as a signer on the church checking account. Dave re-mains as Moderator, along with Sharon Davis and Sheryl Simmons, Treasurer. The mo-tion was seconded by Pastor Rick Farmer and approved by voice vote.

Programming – Colleen McCartney Her report includes calendar dates for 2017 as well as a breakdown of budgeted

items and projected expenditures. There will be no solicitation of funds for family movie nights, however, donations will be accepted for upcoming 5th Sunday lunch-eons.

$2700 was raised for the children’s Christmas project; 79 children and 39 families received gifts.

5th Sunday, January 29th, will celebrate Sam Newell’s ordination. Complete report will be in the next Tidings.

Operations will address the issue of protection for the congregation. A monthly prayer service for the entire church is planned for the last Wednesday of

each month, beginning January 25th at 7:00 p.m. in the sanctuary. Setting goals for the Elders in 2017: increase mentorship, finish the constitution doc-

Attachment IX to the Church Constitution states: Communication and accountability will be enhanced church-wide with quarterly informational meetings before the en-tire church body. Leah Lawrence has agreed to serve as Member at Large for 2017. Her name was inadvertently omitted from the 2017 General Ballot. Motion by Walt to accept Leah as Member at Large; seconded by Todd Petrie and approved by voice vote.

Operations Overseer – Chris Wilson Has approved guidelines for management of the Benevolence Fund. Extermination check of the church building was satisfactory. The dishwasher in the kitchen will be repaired instead of replaced, as previously

stated at Council. Motion by Chris to name Financial Secretary, Jim Betker, as Chief Financial Of-

ficer of the church in order for him to have voting rights at Operations meetings. Betsy Blankenship seconded the motion. Jim clarified that he does have a vote at Operations meetings and doesn’t feel his title needs to change. He said the church treasurer currently does not have a vote at Operations meetings and com-mented on the importance of financial representation at Council. Both the mo-tion and second were withdrawn. Dave stated that Operations is welcome to study the issue if they feel a title change is needed and bring a constitutional change to Council for consideration.

Dick Burtch spoke eloquently about the importance of everyone supporting church ministries and finances, even if at times they disagree.

Programming Overseer – Colleen McCartney The next 5th Sunday is April 30th. Because of budget constraints, donations toward outreach programs and activities

will be accepted. $2700 was raised outside of the budget for the children’s Christmas project – 79 children and 34 families were presented gifts.

Education Overseer – Nancy Betker Amy Vaflor, Nursery Coordinator: all is well with the Nursery; 3-month volun-

teer schedule is in place. Director of Children’s Christian Education, Wendy Petrie: keeping the same

curriculum for Junior Church; Awana going very well; June 18-22 is VBS. Youth Director, Amy Washburn: grades 6-12 youth group is going well; Bible

study and helping with Awana on Tuesday evenings; planning for the summer youth mission.
