RULES AND APPLICATION INFORMATION

Eligibility: The Houston Alumnae Chapter will proudly offer this scholarship to a fulltime undergraduate Sigma Alpha Iota member who is in good standing with their chapter, defined as current with all financial obligations, has fulfilled all responsibilities as a member and/or officer, and who regularly attends formal meetings. The applicant must have above a 2.7 GPA as of December of 2016.

Awards:The Houston Alumnae Chapter will award up to two (2) scholarships in the amount of $750 to deserving candidates this year.

Submission Information:

I. Application – There are written requirements and performance requirements specific to your area of focus. These focus areas are: Music Performance – pg 2 Music Education – pg 4 Music Therapy – pg 6 Music Composition – pg 8 Musicology – pg 10 Arts Administration – pg 12 Non-Music Major/Music Advocate – pg 14

II. University Advisor approval letter (pg 16) – This letter confirms that your GPA is at or above the required 2.7 qualification.

III. Chapter Advisor/President approval letter (pg 17) – This letter confirms that you are a member who regularly attends formal meetings, has fulfilled all responsibilities as a member and/or officer and is in good financial standing with the chapter. If you are currently serving as the president of your chapter, this letter must be submitted by the Vice President of Membership.

Application Deadline: All materials must be submitted by March 20, 2017. Submissions (application with written and performance requirements, as well as both letters of approval) should be emailed to the Katy Dixie Scholarship Coordinator: scholarship.houstonsaichapter@gmail.com

Adjudication: The panel of judges will consist of three to five Houston Alumnae members representing each of the focus areas. All judges will be selected based on significant expertise and experience in their respective focus area.

MUSIC PERFORMANCE-FOCUSED SUBMISSION REQUIREMENTS:1. Video demonstrating the following:

For orchestral instruments: Two standard audition excerpts and 10-15 minutes of solo works of choice (with or without accompaniment)

For pianists: Two movements from any Beethoven Piano Sonata and one movement (up to 15 minutes) of a contrasting work.

For vocalists: Two major arias. 10 minutes of solo works of contrasting style and language.

For all other instruments: 10-15 minutes of solo work and 10 minutes of chamber work(s).

MUSIC COMPOSITION-FOCUSED SUBMISSION REQUIREMENTS:1. Submit a composition work that you have already accomplished2. Inspired by Canada’s “Music Monday” project, in which every elementary school in Canada

sings a song written by astronaut Chris Hadfield at the same time on the first Monday in May while astronauts on the International Space Station sing along with the students in space, write a composition celebrating music in Houston with flexible instrumentation and appropriate voicings grades 4-8 to sing simultaneously that brings everyone together.
