Afriendofminewasworkingwithademandingpersonaltrainerwhoinstructedhertoholdacomplexyogaposeforfiveminutes to build strength and balance. For severalminutes, she attempted tomaster this athletic feat, sweatpouringoffofherbody,paincreepingintohermuscles.Beforethetimewascompleted,thetrainerstoodaboveherandadvised,“Youshouldpray.”“Idon’tthinkGodcareseitherwayifIcandothisornot,”shesaid,throughgrittedteeth,asmoresweatsplashedonthemat.
“True,“hereplied.“Butyouhaveanotherminutetokill.AndGodprobablywouldliketohearfromyou.”

ThisLentwewillbeexperimentingwithsomeofthewaysweletGodhearfromuswhenwegatheronSunday.Thepsalms—the ancient prayers of our people—will be different, usingmodernpoeticlanguageanddifferentmusicalsettings.Wewilluse our beautiful worship space in unusual ways, practicingletting God hear from us in this holy room that we love sodearly.

LetthesoundsofourworshippingassemblysurroundyouandgatheryouintoGod’spresencewhereveryouare.YoucanlistentotheancientwordsandhauntingmusicofLentwhenyouaregoingaboutyour busy life. Pray in your car. TraceyHeislerisexecutivedirectorofCASAofSomerset,Hunterdon,and Warren Counties (CASA SHaW), a nonprofit which providesvolunteer advocates in court for children living in the foster caresystembecauseofabuseorneglect.Traceycametothisworknearly20 years ago as a volunteer and hasmade it her life'smission.Hermothergrewupinfostercare,andTraceysawfirsthandthestrugglesshe had as a result. Sheworks to give other children in the samesituationthevoicethathermotherneverhad.

CandidatesfortheVestryChristianaMasucciChristianahasbeenamemberofSt.Johnsince1990,havingleftNewYorkCityandStJamesChurch,pregnantwithherhusbandFerdyintow.SheandherhusbandareresidentsofBernardsvilleandhavefourchildren(youngadults).Christianawas a former foreign exchange trader atCreditSuisse, and attendedCooperHewittMuseum for aMaster’s degree inEuropean DecorativeArts. PeteVollmarPete is the leastconspicuousmemberof theVollmar family. Theyhavebeenmembersof theparishsince2007. PattytaughtSundayschoolandisapastVestrymember.SydneyandKatieparticipateinchoirwhentheirbusyschedulesallow.They are both freshman, Katie at Basking RidgeHighSchool andSydney at theUniversity ofMichigan. Pete isVicePresident of Sales and SpecialChannels forGAF a division of Standard Industries the world’s largestmanufacturer ofroofing products. In addition to a busy professional life he coached soccer for Somerset Hills for many years and iscurrently an active Band Parent. He enjoys sailing, skiing and RVing to beaches and big 10 football games. He is agraduateofthePennStateUniversity.
