www.sjotm.org Views from the Mountain From the Rector The Reverend Susan R. Ironside Summer Sunday Service Schedule through September 3rd 9:30 am Holy Eucharist, Rite II with music I have a stack of books that have been waiting for me all year long. Novels, mostly. I love getting lost inside of a story, and I do my best reading in the summer, when the days are longer and my schedule is less demanding, and the beach is more readily available. So my stack of books lives in my bedroom, and it grows over the school year, as I acquire more books, and I try to make the stack disappear by September. I have rarely succeeded in that goal. This is, in part, because I sometimes fall asleep when I am reading at the beach. Or I get distracted if the waves are too interesting, or too hypnotic, and staring at them is more compelling than the book in my lap, or someone at the beach with me tells me a story that is more interesting than the story in my book. Year after year, it seems, I pack more books than I actually finish. So they go back in the stack until next time. I have the same problem when I go away on retreat. I pack many books, lugging them to retreat locations, holy books, sometimes, or books that will feed my soul. But at the end of my time away, I often put the unread books back in my luggage, having not accomplished my reading goals. Once I complained about this to a wise friend. “I have nothing to show for my time away.” He nodded. “Except you rested. And you spent time alone. And time with people you love. And you got to hang out with God with no agenda whatsoever.” I still pack the books in my beach bag or my luggage, but I am learning how to rest in God’s presence with no particular agenda. I have no idea why God wants to hang out with me, because I suspect I am pretty boring company. But God doesn’t seem to mind. God likes to stare at the waves too, I guess. Whatever you have packed or planned for your summer, try to find time to put it aside and do nothing. Because God wants to hang out with you, too. And when you are in town on Sundays, come hang out with me at 9:30 and we will share Bread and Wine together. And also lemonade.
