Ihaveastackofbooksthathavebeenwaitingformeallyearlong. Novels,mostly. Ilovegettinglostinsideofastory,andIdomybestreadinginthesummer,whenthedaysarelongerandmyscheduleislessdemanding,andthebeachismorereadilyavailable. Somystackofbookslivesinmybedroom,anditgrowsovertheschoolyear,asIacquiremorebooks,andItrytomakethestackdisappearbySeptember. Ihaverarelysucceededinthatgoal.Thisis,inpart,becauseIsometimesfallasleepwhenIamreadingatthebeach.OrIgetdistractedifthewavesaretoointeresting,ortoohypnotic,andstaringatthemismorecompellingthanthebookinmylap,orsomeoneatthebeachwithmetellsmeastorythatismoreinterestingthanthestoryinmybook. Yearafteryear,itseems,IpackmorebooksthanIactuallyfinish.Sotheygobackinthestackuntilnexttime.
IhavethesameproblemwhenIgoawayonretreat. Ipackmanybooks,luggingthemtoretreatlocations,holybooks,sometimes,orbooksthatwillfeedmysoul. Butattheendofmytimeaway,Ioftenputtheunreadbooksbackinmyluggage,havingnotaccomplishedmyreadinggoals.
OnceIcomplainedaboutthistoawisefriend.“Ihavenothingtoshowformytimeaway.”
Henodded. “Exceptyourested. Andyouspenttimealone. Andtimewithpeopleyoulove. AndyougottohangoutwithGodwithnoagendawhatsoever.”
Istillpackthebooksinmybeachbagormyluggage,butIamlearninghowtorestinGod’spresencewithnoparticularagenda. IhavenoideawhyGodwantstohangoutwithme,becauseIsuspectIamprettyboringcompany. ButGoddoesn’tseemtomind.Godlikestostareatthewavestoo,Iguess.
Whateveryouhavepackedorplannedforyoursummer,trytofindtimetoput itasideanddonothing. BecauseGodwantstohangoutwithyou,too.AndwhenyouareintownonSundays,comehangoutwithmeat9:30andwewillshareBreadandWinetogether.Andalsolemonade.
