FROM OUR EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

The big story in 2018 was the historic demand for KCSARC services. We served 4,888 survivors and their families last year, an overall increase of 19 percent over the previous year.

We live in a new era, one in which sexual assault is more openly discussed, and survivors are more willing to come forward to share their story. That has created opportunities—and a few challenges.

One opportunity was in prevention education. Our work in Renton Schools to create Trauma-Informed classrooms expanded last fall with the launch of a new resource for elementary educators called Launch Pad.

Another opportunity was removing barriers for underserved survivors to access help. In 2018, we launched a new group therapy program for Spanish-speaking adult survivors of child sexual assault, Tiempo de Volar (Time to Fly).

And we’ve embraced the growing opportunity to advocate for changes in the way trauma is understood and survivors are treated throughout systems of response, from medical to criminal justice. This includes connecting survivors who participated in our Speakers Bureau program to legislators and media, as well as engaging a growing number of KCSARC supporters in advocating for stronger public policies.

As for challenges, it’s no surprise that the most significant involved keeping up with demand for direct services. The number of new survivors calling our Client Care team is the highest it has ever been. In addition, this increase has been most acutely felt in our Legal Advocacy department, which helped 2,287 survivors navigate the criminal justice system. Despite adding legal advocates in 2018, our caseloads are becoming untenably high.

That demand has also prompted a search for new space that can accommodate growing staff and client needs, as well as connected systems, such as IT infrastructure. All of this will require new resources and innovation that we will tackle in our next 5-year plan. We look forward to reporting on that progress next year.

Thanks to the generosity of individuals, foundations, and corporations noted in this report, as well as support from state and local governments, we were able to serve every survivor who sought help from KCSARC in 2018. That is 4,888 people whose stories would be vastly different if not for you. We are proud and grateful to be working alongside you.

ABOUT OUR COVER: These illustrations are used in our Tiempo de Volar (A Time to Fly) program, a new group therapy service for Spanish-speaking survivors who often also share a migration experience. The illustrations focus each group discussion on a specific topic. For example, the migration journey is represented by the butterfly card.

KCSARC’S Holistic Approach Ends Sexual Violence

WE END SEXUAL VIOLENCE WITH… Direct services that respond to highly specific and individualized needs of each survivor and their family following a sexual assault, including:

• A 24-hour Resource Line for crisis response, information, and referral for further services;

• Legal and medical advocacy to stand with and advocate for survivors through systems that can be complex and overwhelming;

• Parent education to help families understand what they can do to support their child’s healing;

• Trauma-focused, evidence-based therapy to help survivors heal from effects of trauma;

• Case management to address the auxiliary impacts of sexual assault;

• Direct services in both English and Spanish.

Systems advocacy to change the way victims are viewed and treated in the healthcare and criminal justice systems, the media, and in our everyday interactions. Our systems advocacy includes:

• An Inter Agencies Liaison that connects and educates hospitals, police, Child Protective Services, and other response systems that surround survivors;

• A WordWatch program that trains groups and individuals who work with victims to avoid language that blames victims or minimizes their experience;

• A Speakers Bureau to train and support survivors who want to share their story in public settings, including in the legislature, in media, and in speaking engagements.

Prevention education to shift learned behaviors and cultural norms to prevent sexual violence from happening.

• Prevention educators work directly in schools and in communities to help young people recognize and engage in healthy relationships, while helping educators, parents, and the surrounding community recognize and respond to trauma.

KCSARC gives voice to victims, their families, and the community; creates change in beliefs, attitudes, and behaviors about violence; and instills courage for people to speak out about sexual assault. Everything we do centers on one goal: ending sexual violence.

Heather’s Story I am a survivor of sexual

assault that took place

when I was in my early 30’s.

From the time the incident

occurred and up to the trial

was the most traumatic and

frightening period of my life.

I felt alone, anxious, and in

despair as I tried to navigate the seemingly vague and

impersonal legal process on my own.

When I finally connected to KCSARC for help with legal advocacy, it was like a breath of fresh air.

advocacy, it was like a breath of fresh air. I finally felt like

I had someone in my corner, someone who truly cared.

Not only was my legal advocate compassionate and

considerate of my feelings, she was transparent with every

step of the process along the way, so I was never in the dark.

If it wasn’t for KCSARC, I would have never been able to

see the legal process through until the end of the trial.

With their unwavering support, I was able to find the

justice I was hopeful for.

Lorna’s Story I’m the youngest of seven

children. My oldest brother

started sexually abusing me

when I was still in diapers.

Then, my father abused me.

As time went by, my other

brother began abusing me as

well. The abuse went on until

I was nearly 14.

I told my mother. I wanted her to help me. She didn’t.

She called me a liar, and punished me. I had nowhere to turn.

I was afraid to tell anyone else. They wouldn’t believe me

either. I became angry, stressed, and bitter. Eventually, I told a

young man who became my husband, but after many years of

trying to deal with these issues on my own, I became more

troubled. I couldn’t sleep. I couldn’t concentrate, and I was

quick to flare up with angry outbursts. I sought help from a

community therapist. She talked more about her own rape

than mine. I quit after three sessions, and I felt lost.

As years went by, I began to have heart flutters that turned

into anxiety attacks. I didn’t understand what was happening

to me. My husband urged me to get counseling through

KCSARC. With KCSARC’s help, and a very friendly,

professional counselor named Johanna, I learned I had PTSD.

Over 17 weeks of therapy, I finally addressed the lingering

fears I carried with me my entire life. I learned how PTSD

was affecting my health. But, more importantly, with my

counselor’s help, I learned how to deal with these problems

in a healthy way. I now carry the skills to manage any future

issues I face. I’m less angry. Happiness has replaced my

bitterness, and I’m much more positive. Without KCSARC,

I would still be lost.

Ana’s Story I am a survivor of sexual

abuse that lasted over 10

years. I wasn’t able to tell

anyone because of the fear

instilled in me at age eight

by my father. When I turned

18, I started standing up for

myself against my father.

I went to the Kent Police Department with my mother

and told them everything that had happened to me. They

recommended King County Sexual Assault Resource Center

for support.

I didn’t immediately follow up. One day, I got a call from

KCSARC’s client care staff. They told me that they wanted

to help me, and that they genuinely care about my healing.

My wonderful therapist, Emily, taught me things that I

never knew about, and explained to me in depth that

it wasn’t my fault.

Now that I have completed therapy, I can see life as how it was supposed to be for me.

it was supposed to be for me. Creating new and healthy

relationships, creating new memories, creating a new life

was something that I never imagined happening. My father

always told us that we would never amount to anything

great, but now my family, my daughter, and I are free to be

who we were meant to be. We are each striving to be the

best versions of ourselves by staying together as a family

after everything that we’ve been through. KCSARC reminds

us of the amount of love and strength that we have carried

throughout all these years. I will gladly be the voice for

those who are suffering silently.
