ROUNDTABLE DISCUSSION
Chair: Mr Marcus Goddard, Business Manager, Robinson Research Institute
CHALLENGES AND OPPORTUNITIES FOR HUBS AND UNIVERSITY AND HOSPITAL BASED MRIS
While all medical research institutes (MRIs) share much in common, hubs, university and hospital based MRIs have some unique opportunities and challenges. In this session, we will discuss topics particularly relevant to hubs, university and hospital based MRIs such as how institutes are structured, governed and financed within the context of hubs, universities and hospitals.
The intention of this session is that those participating will benefit from hearing about the different models and approaches to implementation and ways of managing challenges unique to hubs, university and hospital based MRIs.

MRI BUSINESS MANAGERS’ MEETING

YVETTE WADDELL
Chief Executive Officer Brien Holden Vision Institute
NEW FUNDING MODELS FOR MRIS Grants are a highly competitive environment in which to seek funds. The success rates for applications are low - 18.9% in 2018 for ARC Discovery Grants and 16.4% for NHMRC Project Grants in 2017 - while CRC-P applications require an industry led partner. It has become necessary for medical research institutes (and not for profit organisations) to look at other funding models in order to sustainably support their medical research and innovation. This can involve:
• Fee for service work or generating revenue from commercialisation i.e. licensing your technology or co-development technology with a partner.
• Joint Ventures and spin offs and the ability to share profit from these businesses. • Collaborative agreements “work with people that can do something quicker/smarter/better
than you” allowing you to get a sellable project sooner.
The Brien Holden Vision Institute has participated in two Cooperative Research Centre grants – CRC for Eye Research and Technology and the Vision CRC. The result of a successful collaboration was a commercially successful contact lens containing higher levels of oxygen, as well as water, both of which are essential for ocular health. The resultant IP and sales have been reinvested into research and innovation within the organisation. The collaboration also gave Brien Holden Vision Institute invaluable experience and confidence to pursue further collaborators. The Brien Holden Vision Institute has invested royalties it has received into further translational research and a PhD program. It also expanded its remit to include those who are vision impaired because they are unable to access an eye examination and pair of spectacles. Public health initiatives have resulted in:
• More than 12 million people in over 50 countries receiving an eye examination or pair of glasses;
• Helped train around 160,000 eye care personnel; • Supported 14 optometry schools to help build sustainable eye care systems.
ABOUT YVETTE Yvette Waddell is the CEO of Brien Holden Vision Institute. She was previously Chief Operating Officer (COO) at Brien Holden Vision Institute, leading the business development, finance, governance and risk functions that deliver the business’ strategic objectives.
Yvette was appointed COO of the Institute in 2003, following previous roles as General Manager and Executive Director. Since August 2015, while holding responsibility for operational support functions and infrastructure, Yvette has overseen commercialisation transactions and negotiations for Brien Holden Vision Institute. Yvette replaced Professor Brien Holden on the board of Brien Holden Vision Institute in July 2015 and holds group directorships in China and USA, including Optometry Giving Sight. Yvette is CEO of Vision CRC and was CEO of Viscorp Pty Ltd, the commercialisation company established to manage and commercialise intellectual property generated by Vision CRC programs.
Yvette is a graduate of the Australian Institute of Company Directors and was recognised as one of the most influential women in optical in 2016, by Vision Monday, a leading optical industry journal in the USA. She is a University of New South Wales Australia graduate, completing an MBA at AGSM at UNSW Business School.

PANEL DISCUSSION
WHAT CAN MEDICAL RESEARCH ACHIEVE OVER THE NEXT 25 YEARS?
Hosted by Dr Norman Swan, ABC Radio National Health Report
Panellists
Professor John Shine AC, President, Australian Academy of Science
Professor Kathryn North AM, Director, Murdoch Children’s Research Institute
Glenys Beauchamp PSM, Secretary, Department of Health
Professor Ian Frazer AC, President, Australian Academy of Health and Medical Sciences
Dr Charlie Day, CEO, Office of Innovation and Science Australia
In the last few decades, new vaccines, diagnostics and drugs have transformed healthcare and mean that people are healthier and living longer. We’ve seen the global elimination of smallpox, death rates fall significantly for measles, malaria and other infectious diseases, and HIV has been transformed from a death sentence to a manageable life-long condition. None of it would have been possible without medical research, which has provided the tools to significantly reduce global disease burden – tools like new interventions, treatments, prevention options and research-led public health initiatives.
But what health challenges will we have to face over the next 20-30 years? How can medical research prepare us for these challenges? Large scale environmental changes and our expanding cities could drastically impact the health and well being of the population. Technological advances in health and society have the ability to radically change the way we manage and understand our health needs. And how can we prepare for the next big disease outbreak?
Our expert panellists will explore the potential health challenges on the horizon and how medical research can make sure we’re ready for anything the future could send our way.
PLEASE NOTE: this session will be recorded by ABC Radio National and broadcast on the Health Report, 26th November 2018.
