It is always a pleasure to write the annual letter to our friends, scholars, alumni, and university partners. It is an
exciting time to be at the Terry Foundation and to be engaged, as always, in helping educate the young people
of Texas. We began fall 2018 with 1,406 Scholars enrolled across our 13 partner universities, down modestly
from fall 2017’s enrollment of 1,624. This reduction is intentional as we focus on getting our educational “spend”
in line with our “income.” Our retention rate remains strong at 91.6%, and the academic record of our Scholars
is absolutely amazing: cumulative GPA of 3.57 for Traditional Scholars and 3.46 for Transfer Scholars. These
statistics speak volumes about the high quality of our Scholars when one considers that many have faced
hardships, work to support themselves or their families, and maintain various responsibilities and commitments
on and off campus. Mr. Terry always said “No test can measure how hard someone is willing to work.” Our
program is a testament to that truth.
We have invested over $273 million in educating young Texans from inception to date, with a budget for
2018-19 of $34.76 million, down slightly from last year.
In last year’s letter, I mentioned the generosity of many of our alumni in giving back financially to the Foundation
with their dollars, despite having never been asked. This contribution is over and above the very substantial
commitment in time that we receive every year from our Board, our Advisory Board, Alumni Association officers,
and our many interview panelists, none of whom are compensated. We sincerely thank each of you for your
continuing service. As of December 31, 2018, we have received over $64,000 from our Alumni, again without
formally asking. We commit to you that we will be careful stewards of your contributions.
On top of last year’s 30th Anniversary film, this year we followed up with a documentary titled “A Generous
Life: The Story of Howard Terry.” It is, if anything, better than the last! We were eager to create this film while
those who knew this remarkable man were still vigorous in both mind and body. We again thank those many
Alumni and Scholars who participated in making these wonderful films, which are available to view on our
website and YouTube channel.
In 2018 we were pleased to debut Terry Connect, the social media site available exclusively to Terry Scholars
and Alumni, for the purpose of allowing them to share their disciplines, career paths, CVs, professional
experiences, job openings, and provide a mechanism for current scholars to find mentors in their chosen field.
Terry Connect has been a tremendous success and we urge every Terry Scholar to join if you have not.
We again thank all those who have contributed to our continuing success. Each of us at the Foundation
recognizes that we have the best job in the world: we are helping change lives for the better every day!
Very truly yours,
Rhett G. Campbell
Chief Executive Officer and Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Terry Foundation

Dear Scholars, Alumni, and Friends:
“Being a Terry Scholar means that I am never alone. I get to have a family away from home. It means I never had
to worry about how I was going to attend college and allowed
me to completely immerse myself in academics and self-growth...
Most
importantly,
being a Terry
Scholar means
that I get to be a
part of something
that is much bigger than myself.” -Daisy Montano (UNT 2014)
It all started with a single gift from Howard and Nancy Terry in 1987,
when the Houston couple founded what is now the largest private
source for scholarships in Texas.
The Terry’s believed that the students to whom they extended a helping hand
would, in turn, give back – to the Foundation, the community and beyond, long
after they themselves were no longer with us. Today, the success of thousands
of Terry Scholars stands as testimony to the wisdom of that belief. Indeed, that
legacy has only grown since the passing of both Founders in 2012.

Howard and Nancy Terry’s generosity has enabled the Foundation to make a tremendous
impact on the lives of others. In its 31-year history, the Foundation has not solicited
financial contributions. However, we recognize that this is a significant way
to give back, and we greatly appreciate our Alumni and friends who
remember us financially.

We extend a sincere thanks to those who made these contributions: every dollar received from Alumni and friends
means more scholarships across Texas. In acknowledgment that such gifts will only increase in importance as the
Foundation pursues its mission, the Board of Directors aims to improve the visibility of financial support options for
Alumni and friends. Although the Foundation does not actively solicit contributions, we welcome them and promise
to be good stewards of all financial gifts, treating them on par with the endowment.
