1 April 2019 IN IT FOR THE LONG HAUL: A FOCUS ON RESILIENT RESPONSE In 2018, natural disasters cost us more than $155 billion worldwide, claimed more than 10,000 lives, and left millions of people displaced and suffering additional losses. This was on the heels of an especially devastating year in 2017, racking up more than $300 billion in damage. This past year, the US experienced a total of 11 billion-dollar weather-related disasters, including Hurricanes Michael and Florence, and the unprecedented wildfires in California. Both new and prior events required significant attention from the Good360 Disaster Recovery team. In all, we distributed more than $30 million in critically needed goods in response to 20 disasters at home and around the world. Impact on this level could only be achieved through our close collaboration with partners large and small, including more than 130 nonprofit organizations and more than 300 corporate donors. Good360’s role in the disaster recovery arena is to fill gaps in product needs in impacted communities – we focus on delivering the RIGHT GOODS to the RIGHT PEOPLE at the RIGHT TIME during all stages of a disaster, from the initial response phase through long-term recovery and rebuilding. We are now in the recovery stage in a number of impacted regions including Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina, California, Texas, Florida, Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands. With this list growing each year, we know that these same regions will also be some of the most vulnerable regions for the 2019 hurricane, fire, and flood seasons. In order to provide continuity to our recovery partners, we need to take action now to make sure we have the products and commitments from our corporate donors so that we may take swift action to deliver items as needs arise in the response stage. Hurricane Michael, a historic Category 4 storm, struck the Florida Panhandle in October 2018, unleashing heavy rain, high winds, and a devastating storm surge. The 155 mph winds that tore through Florida and parts of Southwest Georgia ripped homes and businesses apart, and left over 1 million people without power. To this day, hundreds of families are still unable to go back to their homes. Some are staying with family and friends who have opened their doors to them. Others had no other choice but to gather their families into tents on their front yards until they are able to find more suitable living arrangements. Good360 has been responding to the needs of the nonprofits on the ground who serve these families since the storm first hit and will continue working alongside them throughout the long-term recovery.

Hurricane Florence caused severe damage in the Carolinas in September 2018. Despite making landfall as a weakened Cat-egory 1 hurricane, Florence still had enough wind speed to uproot trees and cause widespread power outages throughout the Carolinas. However, the majority of the damage inflicted by the storm was a result of freshwater flooding. Due to the storm’s slow movement, Florence continually dumped heavy rain along coastal areas and then stalled completely over the city of Wilmington. The heavy rain caused widespread inland flooding, inundating cities and rendering major highways impassable. Although the damage caused by Florence was unprecedented, its downgrade to Category 1 caused many news outlets to limit their coverage and donors to lose interest in the response and recovery. Good360 understood the dire need for assistance in the Carolinas and was on the ground within 72 hours of when the storm hit, leveraging the strong partnerships we forged in the wake of Hurricane Michael in 2016. We will be working with those same trusted partners and others throughout the recovery of Hurricane Florence.

A period of extended drought over many years has led to longer and more devastating California wildfire seasons. 2018 exemplified the heightened danger that wildfires pose – among others, two massive fires burned concurrently in northern and southern California. While both fires did widespread damage, the Camp Fire was exceptionally fierce. The fire completely destroyed the town of Paradise and became the most destructive fire in California history. Disasters often expose underlying socioeconomic challenges in a region, and that was true in the aftermath of the Camp Fire. Butte County, already in the midst of a housing crisis before the fire, now also had 50,000 displaced survivors to take care of. In the midst of this catastrophic event, several groups stepped in to help their neighbors. Organizations like Caring Choices, Hayden Ministries, and the North-ern California Youth and Family Program jumped into action to ramp up the assistance they were already providing before the fires. Good360 has already provided these groups with essentials like blankets, socks, and mattresses for sheltering. We will continue our support of these groups as the rebuilding phase kicks off.

FOCUSING ON LONG-TERM RECOVERY

HURRICANE HARVEY

As part of our commitment to strategic and effective long-term recovery, Good360 continues to support a number of regions impacted by disasters in 2017 and before. This section provides an update on our work specifically in communities impacted by Hurricanes Harvey, Irma and Maria as well as the 2017 California wildfires.

In the last year, Good360’s involvement in the Hurricane Harvey rebuilding effort has grown significantly. Good360 has donated over $18 million in supplies to more than 25 organizations active in recovery. We’ve provided our partners on the ground with emergency goods for shelters, cleaning supplies, personal protective equipment for volunteers, supplies for re-building homes, and furniture as families are able to move back in. As volunteer groups began reconstructing homes, we were there with shingles, insulation, flooring, and plumbing supplies. Thanks to our partnerships with the Rebuild Texas Fund, the Center for Disaster Philanthropy and others, Good360 will continue to provide these goods to recovering communities across Texas throughout 2019.

Hurricanes Irma and Maria created a special challenge for survivors and aid groups in the Caribbean – a challenge that we are all still struggling to overcome. While Puerto Rico’s ongoing economic crisis was made worse by Hurricane Maria, the US Virgin Islands continue to suffer in silence as mainland audiences forget the island’s experience with Hurricane Irma, which pounded the islands with Category 5 windspeeds before it went on to damage parts of Florida. In both cases, the distance between our Caribbean islands and the mainland US have served to increase shipping costs, reduce shipping options, and distance the islands’ plight from the minds of most US audiences. As we announced in early 2019, Good360 has launched a Commitment to Action with the Clinton Global Initiative. As a part of this Initiative, we will continue leveraging partnerships with Fortune 500 companies to fill the gap for our disaster-impacted neighbors.

Good360’s Hurricane Irma recovery efforts continued through 2018 with over $3 million in product distributed to nonprofits in the affected regions. The needs of the nonprofits and survivors have evolved over the past year as many of the families that were affected by Irma are now in the process of moving back into their homes and are working on replacing some of their destroyed belongings. Good360 actively responded to this need by providing furniture, bedding, mattresses and rebuilding materials to the nonprofits serving their communities. In August 2018, Good360 held an event with Rooms To Go to provide brand new furniture to 40 families in the Florida Keys who had received little to no assistance with the refurnishing of their homes. Good360 will remain engaged with this region during long-term recovery.

RESILIENT RESPONSE

THANK YOU TO OUR DONORS

On the one-year anniversary of Hurricane Maria in September 2018, Good360, All Hands and Hearts, and Global Citizen launched Resilient Response – an initiative centered on a six-point pledge that is designed to encourage companies and individuals to take a more thoughtful and less wasteful approach to disaster response. A number of organizations have joined the initiative and have committed to embody the best practices outlined in the pledge. Resilient Response also formed the basis for a formal Commitment to Action made with the Clinton Global Initiative where Good360 will continue to invite Fortune 500 companies to officially join the movement.

The following pages outline the companies that generously donated much-needed product for Good360’s disaster recovery efforts along with the nonprofits who received the goods. Below, we recognize those organizations who contributed cash to help support the distribution of those goods. For every $1 raised, Good360 was able to distribute $16 in critically needed goods to disaster-impacted regions in 2018.

IMPACT STORIES

GOOD360 AND DOW PARTNER TO BRING HOPE AND HOUSING FOR HURRICANE HARVEY SURVIVORS

UPS, SAFE AMERICA AND GOOD360 DELIVER $400,000 IN DONATED TOYS FOR PUERTO RICO CHILDREN

WALMART DONATIONS HELPS HURRICANE HARVEY SURVIVORS IN ROSHARON, TX

After Hurricane Harvey tore a wide swath of devastation across Texas and inflicted a staggering $125 billion in damage, U.S. corporations stepped up to support one of the biggest relief efforts ever. Among those companies is Good360 partner, The Dow Chemical Company. Dow’s response to Harvey was swift and impactful. The company purchased 135 trailers for displaced employees to live in while their homes were being rebuilt. As the floodwaters and immediate dangers of the hurricane receded and communities throughout the state slowly recovered, most of the Dow employees living in these trailers returned to permanent housing. In one of the most complex donations in our history, Dow agreed to give the remaining 57 trailers on its books to Good360. We accepted the trailers and repurposed them to benefit Hurricane Harvey survivors, providing homes for people who had lost theirs.

Good360 partnered with Safe American and The UPS Foundation to provide 15,000 toys for children in Puerto Rico during ‘Three Kings Day’, the culmination of the Christmas season. The ‘Toys for Puerto Rico’ project – part of the Be Safe America campaign – was in response to a request from Puerto Rico’s First Lady Beatriz Rosselló, who wanted to give toys to children in areas still impacted by last fall’s Hurricane Maria. “We look forward to helping involve more of our partners beyond this holiday season and to do other things that could be just as meaningful to families in Puerto Rico,” said Good360 CEO Howard Sherman. First Lady Rosselló responded to the donations by saying “On behalf of the people of Puerto Rico, I want to thank the Safe America Foundation, Good360, The UPS Foundation, ASTRA, as well as all the volunteers and donors that have made it possible to bring happiness to so many children on such a special day for them.”

The “Little Cambodia” neighborhood of Rosharon, TX suffered massive destruction in the wake of Hurricane Harvey. The small community is comprised mainly of immigrants from Cambodia, Vietnam, and Laos, and relies heavily on farming as its economic mainstay. Residents have sustained their livelihoods for generations by growing traditional Asian vegetables in their backyard greenhouses, and then selling them at farmers’ markets throughout the region. Therefore, when their homes and fields were destroyed by Harvey, their livelihoods were destroyed as well. Sewa International has been helping this community rebuild and it has not been an easy road for the organization. A lack of attention to the small neighborhood has led to a dearth in donations and funding for rebuilding. However, Good360 has been a constant partner through their projects. Along with other rebuilding supplies, the paint donated from Walmart is helping accelerate Sewa’s work. For the many residents of Little Cambodia, some of whom have been living underneath their stilted homes in plywood shelters, each home completed is another step towards recovery. Good360 looks forward to continuing to help organizations like Sewa International rebuild, and our partnership with Walmart is vital to our ability to do that.
