Quilt entry classes reflect the class standards used by The

Quilters of South Carolina and other quilting organizations.

The quilt size refers to the perimeter of the quilt (the

measurement around the quilt). Measuring the length of

all sides and then adding all the lengths together

determine the perimeter.

All entries must be the sole work of the exhibitor, except

in classes for groups.

If someone other than exhibitor does the quilting for a fee,

it is considered as professional quilted and should be

entered under the Group quilt section of Hand-Quilted or

Machine-Quilted.

School Group Quilt classes may be found in the Youth

Division.

Professional versus Amateur Defined:

A Professional Exhibitor is defined as anyone who has

earned more than $1,000 during the calendar year either

by selling their items, teaching the subject, doing extended

exhibiting, or involving themselves in other professional

related activities in a capacity that would give the entrant

unfair advantage over a hobbyist.

Unless otherwise designated as a Professional section, all

SECTION 0343 – EGGERY, AMATEUR

CRITERIA FOR JUDGING EGGERY

Overall Effect:

o The total composition should be pleasing and

interesting - the products of all elements together;

i.e., intensity, value, color scheme, center of interest

area, and light source.

Color Management:

o The use of color scheme, color repetition, tints,

accents, warm and cool colors.

o Pleasing color balance, repetition of flow of colors

throughout the painting, which allows the eye to

travel through the painting.

Value Control:

o How light or dark an object is overall or the change

from light to dark within an object, which creates

form.

o Lack of value control makes for distractions and/or

flat objects.

Intensity Control:

o The brightness or dullness of a color or objects.

Stroke Control:

o Strokes must be pulled with consistency, show flow

and control.

o Comma strokes should have nicely rounded beads

flowing into well-tapered tails.

Blending Skills:

o A graduation of values from light to dark, should be

smooth without blotches or visible value lines.

o No over or under blending apparent.

Line Work or Details:

o Should be controlled and consistent, showing

evidence of practice and attention given to details.

Background:

o Needs to support and enhance the overall

composition. Good use of color scheme, cast

shadows and light areas from light source and

antiquing.

Neatness:

o Should have an overall neat appearance with no

evidence of tracing lines (except watercolor),

misshapen objects or evidence of clean up or untidy

edges.

Finish:

o Should provide adequate protection for the painting

without impurities and be skillfully applied.

o The back of objects should also be finished.

EGGERY GUIDELINES

Beaded and Jeweled Eggs: o Two-thirds (2/3) of the outer eggshell must be

beaded or jeweled. o Work should be neat and clean with no visible glue. o Rows must be straight; no beads loose or missing; no

string visible. o Beads should lay flat against the shell and be smooth

and even.

o Degree of difficulty is determined by size and type of beads/jewels and pattern in which they are applied.

o Larger beads cover more space and generally are considered less difficult than smaller beads.

o Fused beads and rhinestone chain are considered far easier to apply than strung beads or individual crystals and this should be taken into account when judging the eggshell.

o Various beads and/or jewels may be used.

Diorama Category (Scenes): o Egg should focus on a three-dimensional scene built

within the shell. o May have any number of openings, with or without

doors. o Should have a background, mid-ground and

foreground. o Glitter does not count as a dimensional component. o Unique and intricate eggs should earn more points. o No glue should show and all blow holes should be

properly covered. o Figures should be in proportion to each other and in

proportion to the egg shell used. o Exterior design should tie in with the interior design.

Hand Painted Category: o An egg on which a design is created by hand using a

paint medium. o The artist must paint the image free-hand. o Tole and one-stroke usually not allowed in this

category. o Judged on the ability to create depth, shadow and

distance as well as proper color coordination. o A coat of paint applied to the shell is not considered

"hand painted". o At least one-third (1/3) of the outer shell should be

painted with the design.

Hinged, Jewelry Boxes: o The above applies as far as beaded, jeweled, diorama

or hand-painted.

Christmas: o Christmas category rules would apply under diorama

or hand painted category. Please refer to definition of "Amateur Exhibitor" in hobby craft rules & regulations.
