Dear Neighbors,2018 was our most joyful year yet as we found new, creative ways to advance our mission of bringing joy to kids battling hunger or illness. Together with Dunkin’ and Baskin-Robbins franchisees, vendor partners, crew members, guests and Dunkin’ Brands employees, we reached new heights, including raising more than $6.1 million to bring joy to kids, surprising 150 nonprofits with $2 million in grants on Giving Tuesday and providing more than 4.8 million meals to children and families in need.

Our milestone moment was launching our first signature program, Dogs for Joy – our in-residence dog program which aims to increase the number of service dogs who work full-time in children’s hospitals. In its first year, we plan to provide $2 million to 15 children’s hospitals to launch or expand in-residence dog programs that we know are game-changers for pediatric patients.

We continued our work with Feeding America®, providing new grants to 20 network food banks, and we welcomed 42 new nonprofits into the family in 2018, extending our reach into new communities with even more organizations dedicated to bringing joy.

As we close the books on a joyful 2018, we’re looking forward to an exciting 2019 and think you’ll enjoy what we have in store for you. All we can say is: strap on your dancing shoes.

With Joy,

MOBILIZING FOR JOY

The Joy in Childhood Foundation is powered by a network of

volunteers – hundreds strong across the country – without whom we could not fulfill our mission to bring joy to kids

battling hunger or illness. They mobilize throughout the year to raise funds, plan events, pack

meals, surprise kids with donuts and ice cream in children’s

hospitals and present grants to nonprofits in their neighborhoods.

Miten Patel, Dunkin’ Franchisee in New Jersey

Miten’s dedication to the Foundation trickles down to his crew

members – a single one of his restaurants in Hackettstown,

NJ, raised $12,563 for kids battling hunger or illness during the

Community Cups® fundraiser – more than any other restaurant

in the country. Miten is also very active with the Valerie Fund, a

Foundation grantee dedicated to improving the lives of children

and families affected by pediatric cancer, and regularly contributes

monetary and food and beverage donations to local schools,

churches and boys and girls clubs.

Jenn DeLuca, Dunkin’ Senior Manager Multi-Brand Operations

Jenn organizes the Mid-Atlantic Dunkin’ Cup golf tournament,

coordinating one of the Foundation’s most successful annual

events that raises more than $250,000 for the Foundation.

MID-ATLANTIC Gave $802,000 to 50 local nonprofits

FUNDRAISINGPutting the “Fun” in Fundraising

Our grantmaking efforts are made possible thanks to the generosity of Dunkin’

and Baskin-Robbins franchisees, crew members, vendor partners, guests and

Dunkin’ Brands employees who come together to raise funds while having fun.

Community Cups® & Community Cones® Every year Dunkin’ and Baskin-Robbins franchisees hold month-long in-store fund-

raisers for the Foundation. Thanks to the hard work of their crew members and the

generosity of their guests, we raised $2.2 million in 2018.

Dress Like Marilyn The Mid-Atlantic Chapter’s Manhattan Gala was the event to attend this year,

with 1920s apparel, auction items and an appearance from Marilyn Monroe herself.

The event committee raised nearly half a million dollars for kids.

Celebrating Our annual vendor dinner is always one of our most joyful events of the year.

Thanks to the generosity and support of our vendor partners, we raised $290,000

and presented Hole in the Wall Gang Camp with an additional grant to send more

kids to camp. Read more about our corporate partners on page 16.

Whirly-What? If you’ve never heard of Whirlyball, think of a mix of lacrosse and bumper cars.

Having fun already? Our Central East and Midwest chapters sure are – their

Whirlyball events raised a combined $18,500 in 2018.

When kids face illness and have to be in the hospital, it robs them of the simple

joys of childhood – that’s why our mission is to bring joy to kids, even on their

most difficult days. To maximize our reach and our impact, we took several

approaches to bringing joy in 2018:

• Dogs for Joy, a new, innovative signature program

• Supporting a variety of local nonprofits through hundreds of regional grants

• Our national partnership with Starlight Children’s Foundation

Dogs for Joy

What do kids facing illness need the most? What are the most impactful ways to

bring joy? These are questions we asked doctors, child life specialists, palliative

care physicians and nurses in 2018. The answers compelled us to create Dogs for

Joy, our new program to dramatically increase the number of service dogs who

work full-time in children’s hospitals bringing joy to kids and helping them meet

their healthcare goals. In the first year of the program we will award $2 million to

15 children’s hospitals to launch a new in-residence dog program or expand an

existing program, starting with Cleveland Clinic Children’s.

Meet Cooper, our Chief Joy Officer! In launching "Dogs for Joy", the Joy in Childhood Foundation has adopted its

own in-residence dog, Cooper Dunkin’, who serves as the Foundation’s Chief Joy

Officer and the Dogs for Joy program ambassador. Cooper, a black lab/golden

retriever mix with a splash of poodle, is a trained service dog hailing from Canine

Assistants in Milton, GA, and attends Foundation events like fundraisers and

hospital visits.

Regional Grants

In 2018, we gave $1,194,000 to 84 nonprofit organizations

focused on bringing joy to kids battling illness across the country

– from camps for kids with illnesses to music, art and play

therapy programs and dozens of other organizations that create

fun celebrations, such as birthday parties, for kids in need.

Partnership with Starlight Children’s Foundation

Through our partnership with Starlight Children’s Foundation,

we are building 10 Starlight Sites – bright, kid-friendly spaces

like therapy kitchens, playrooms, teen lounges and gardens – to

bring joy to kids staying in the hospital. Starlight Sites transform

hospital environments into brighter and happier spaces to sup-

port healing and inspire kids to have fun. We inaugurated the

first Starlight Site, a fully accessible therapy kitchen, at La Rabida

Children’s Hospital in Chicago – and the next nine sites will be

unveiled in 2019 including: Atlanta, GA; Boston, MA; Cleveland,

OH; Greensboro, NC; Hartford, CT; Los Angeles, CA; Nashville,

TN; Queens, NY; and Washington, DC.

Dunkin’ Brands CEO David Hoffmann and former CEO Nigel Travis unveil the Foundation’s inaugural Starlight Site at La Rabida Children’s Hospital in Chicago, IL alongside franchisees Reena Panjwani, Siraj Virani, Barkat Gillani, Fayyaz Gillani, Ray Panjwani and Amin Panjwani and patients

RETT’S ROOST Rett’s Roost is a sanctuary for

families with a child afflicted by

cancer. It offers a community of

loving kindness and supportive

activities in a peaceful, natural

setting to ease their experience

with the disease. The Foundation

provided a grant to Rett’s Roost

for their annual family retreat

designed to provide parents,

siblings, and kids with cancer the

tools to create joy in their lives.

The retreat includes fun activities

for kids like hikes, swimming,

animal and nature connections, and

therapeutic art, yoga, and music.

CONFETTI FOUNDATION The Confetti Foundation provided

an additional 500 “birthdays-in-a-

box” to pediatric patients thanks

to a grant from the Foundation.

The boxes come fully equipped

with all the supplies a family needs

to celebrate a child’s birthday in

the hospital – from plates and

silverware to streamers, crayons,

banners and confetti.

Days of Joy

Our franchisees and their teams love bringing joy to kids by celebrating a Day

of Joy at their local children’s hospital. This includes bringing the fun of donut

decorating and ice cream socials to kids’ bedsides. Through our grant to Starlight

Children’s Foundation, we also distributed 15,000 Starlight Gowns to children’s

hospitals nationwide in 2018 on Days of Joy. Starlight Gowns give kids in hospitals

high-quality, comfortable and brightly-

colored gowns to wear while undergoing

treatment. The gowns have fun designs

that transform children into astronauts,

cowboys, and other characters so they can

have fun and enjoy being kids, even in the

hospital.

Pediatric patients at Tufts Medical Center in Boston, MA decorate donuts during a Day of Joy

Ramona Dietrich, patient at Chicago’s Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital, created the winning entry for the Joy in Childhood Foundation’s Design-a-Gown contest. We produced and distributed 12,000 of Ramona’s gowns to pediatric patients in 2018.

– from BackPack Programs, to

School Pantries, food banks,

after-school feeding programs and

more.

We continued our partnership with

Feeding America®, providing 13

food banks with $20,000 grants

and seven food banks with $100,000 grants over three years. Through these

grants and a one-time, $1 million grant in December 2017, we helped deliver more

MANNA CONEJO VALLEY FOOD BANK, THOUSAND OAKS, CA

The Manna Conejo Valley Food

Bank hosts a three-day-a-week

community food pantry with a

variety of perishable and non-

perishable food items and provides

“60-Days of Holiday” foods in

November and December. In 2018

the Food Bank provided meals

to 2,500 kids in need thanks to a

grant from the Foundation.

END 68 HOURS OF HUNGER BARNSTEAD, NH “Our mission is to fill the 68-hour gap

between a child’s last meal at school

on Friday and their breakfast on

Monday, but we also have kids who

are hungry and can’t concentrate.

They go to the nurse with hunger

pangs and wait by the lunchroom

trash for food. Thanks to our grant

from the Foundation, we were able

to set up the snack station of our

dreams. Now kids can take what they

need to get through the day and

bring home.”

Darlene Schoeneberg, Dunkin’ Operations Director, Mid-Atlantic Chapter Co-Chair

For Darlene, Mid-Atlantic Chapter Co-Chair, hunger relief

is an issue that hits close to home – she adopted a little

girl from Nepal 11 years ago who was suffering from severe

malnutrition. But as her daughter gained the proper

nutrition, she began to thrive. Darlene’s dedication to

the Foundation shines through – but she also frequently

volunteers with our grantees, like Table to Table, a New

Jersey food rescue program that collects prepared and

perishable food that would otherwise be wasted and

delivers it to organizations that serve the hungry.
