Excitement is Building for Our 2018 Fiber Builds in Utah

Earth Day Focuses on Plastics Pollution Earth Day has been celebrated yearly in the U.S. on April 22 since 1970. The focus of Earth Day 2018 is to take steps toward the ultimate goal of replacing plastics made from fossil fuels with nonpolluting materi-als. Plastics have become a problem of global proportion for reasons including these:

• When oil-based plastics are dis-carded, bacteria can’t break them down. They end up accumulating in large quantities in landfills, lingering and polluting for years.

• Single-use-plastics (such as water bottles, cups, and straws) are often thrown on open land and in rivers, lagoons, and oceans. As a result, ani-mals and marine life can be harmed.

To help tackle this problem, you’re encouraged to not only “reuse and recycle,” but also to reject single-use plastics proactively when possible. Find out more at www.earthday.org.

The 2nd Quarter of the year is when the ground starts to thaw, plants start to turn

green, and All West constructions crews start working on new fiber projects. If you

live in one of the Utah areas listed below, you’ll start seeing our crews out and about,

working to bring fiber to your area!

These schedules for when construction begins in each area are estimates, and may change as work begins:

If you’re experiencing slower than expected performance from your home’s Wi-Fi network, it could be the result of wireless interference. This typically comes from three types of sources:

1. Walls and floors blocking wireless signalsThe construction materials in your home can greatly affect wireless communication speed

and range. Materials such as wood and glass don’t have much of an effect. However, denser

materials such as concrete, brick, and metal can make it difficult to connect. These denser

materials can also slow your network speed or even completely block wireless signals from

reaching certain parts of your home. Large furniture items such as filing cabinets or book-

shelves, as well as appliances like stoves or refrigerators, can also interfere with Wi-Fi. You

may be able to solve the problem simply by moving your router to a different location.

2. Appliances and electronics emitting radio frequency interferenceWi-Fi interference can also come from other electronics and appliances that aren’t

connected to your wireless network but use the same 2.4GHz or 5GHz frequencies to

communicate. Examples include cordless phones, Bluetooth devices, and baby moni-

tors. Microwave ovens generate radio frequency noise as a byproduct, so if yours is

located close to your Wi-Fi router, you may notice a network slowdown or get discon-

nected only when you’re using your microwave. Again, try relocating your router.

3. Other Wi-Fi networks using the same channel as your own Wi-Fi network Interference from competing Wi-Fi networks is especially common in apartment build-

ings and other densely populated areas. Wi-Fi networks broadcast on channels, so when

nearby Wi-Fi networks are set to use the same channel, they’ll constantly be competing

with each other for limited bandwidth. To rectify this situation, see if your router is able

to automatically find the

least crowded Wi-Fi chan-

nel. If not, you may want

to upgrade to a new router

with this feature.

Would you rather not have to deal with Wi-Fi network installation and troubleshooting? Sign up for our Man-aged Wi-Fi service and let All West’s techni-cians handle it all for a small monthly fee. To learn more, call 866-ALL-WEST.

What are Common Causesof Wi-Fi Interference?

We’d Like to Plant an Idea in Your MindApril is National Lawn and Garden Month, which makes it the ideal time to start thinking about what vegeta-bles, herbs, and flowers you want to plant this year.

There’s a lot to love about gardening: It offers a chance to be outside, get a little exercise, beautify your property, and add fresh produce to your meals. Of course, gardening presents chal-lenges as well, such as uncooperative weather, plant-eating pests, and dam-aging diseases. As any avid gardener will tell you, however, overcoming these challenges is part of the fun.

To sow seeds of inspiration, check out the many gardening resources available online including:

• HGTV www.hgtv.com/design/ topics/gardening

• Better Homes and Gardens www.bhg.com/gardening

• Garden Guides www.gardenguides.com

Should you be planning to dig a new garden bed, remember to call 811 to have underground utility lines marked. In some cases, lines are buried close to the surface and could easily be damaged by even shallow digging, resulting in service inter-ruptions to your neighborhood. The affected local utilities will send a loca-tor to your property, free of charge.

Repeal of Net Neutrality Will Not Impact Your Internet ServiceOn December 14, 2017, the FCC repealed the 2015 Open Internet Order know as Net Neutrality. This reclassified Broadband Internet Access Service as a Title I informa-tion service instead of a Title II communication service. Internet providers are now allowed to speed up service for websites they favor and block or slow down others.

Due to the extensive media cover-age of this Net Neutrality ruling, some of you have expressed con-cerns to us about what impact this repeal would have on your internet service. We want to assure you that it will be business as usual at All West Communications— nothing will change that would affect your user experience. We have never throttled or engaged in a paid access model for any internet content providers in the past, and we have no plans to start these practices now.

All West remains committed to providing our customers with excellent services at fair prices. If you have any questions about what the repeal of Net Neutrality means to you, please call us at 866-ALL-WEST.

Earlier this year, Microsoft introduced new requirements to receive Windows updates on

their operating system. This was done in order to help combat the Meltdown and Spectre

threats and stop some of the blue screens that were happening with Windows updates. The

requirement involved updating anti-virus software to make it compatible with the updates.

SecureIT Plus web security and anti-virus, which is included with all Tech Home packages,

was updated and made compatible with the new Windows Updates as quickly as possible

and released to all existing customers. Customers can be confident that SecureIT Plus is

always being evaluated and updated to keep you safe online. Some tips to remember:

1) In order for hackers to take advantage of the vulnerabilities posed by Meltdown and

Spectre, the hackers would still need to install malware on that machine. SecureIT

works full time to stop malicious code from getting on that machine.

2) Remain vigilant and continue to watch out for phishing emails and attachments from

sources that you do not know.

3) In the unlikely event that you do get an infection, SecureIT Plus users have unlimited

virus removals available to them at no extra charge.

Tech Home with SecureIT Plus provides leading protection from malware and ransomware. This include:

Protect – Protection for today's life.

Protect Plus – Protection for today's home.

Support – Support you want. Protection you need.
