"So they left their father Zebedee in the boat along with the hired men
and followed him." What did Zebedee think about all of this? His sons and
his partners, James and John, suddenly left their post and followed Jesus.
So there he stood in the boat with a crew of employees, but not one of his
sons. We can't help but wonder whether Zebedee was in favor of this prom-
ise that his heirs would become "! shers of men." Most likely, this event was
the cause of some familial tension.
Throughout the Gospels, Jesus in-
structs us to love and serve others
for the love of God. But the Lord also
makes it clear that our devotion to
him is meant to trump our devotion
to anything-or anyone-else. For our
part, we are called to allow this di-
vine allegiance to exist in those we
love, even when it means a sacri! ce for us as well. Parents for example, like
Zebedee, are called to encourage their children to follow the Lord's call. A
son or daughter's vocation to religious life certainly exempli! es this kind of
sacri! ce for a parent who might have had a di# erent plan in mind. But in
truth every son and daughter has a vocation from God and parents have
the opportunity to support and assist their children as they seek to hear
and follow God's special plan for their lives.
We don't know for sure how Zebedee responded to the vocation of his
sons, but we know that James and John were counted among the Twelve
Apostles and that their devotion and dedication helped to spread the Gos-
pel to the ends of the earth. Regardless of what he might have thought as
he stood in that boat, we can be quite sure that looking back now, Zebedee
can rejoice heartily in the choice of his sons to leave their nets and follow
Christ.

Agnus Dei: History of Latin and Covenant in Catholic Tradition Bernie Leach
Assembly members at St. Stephen’s are singing the Lamb of God in Latin
(Agnus Dei) during Ordinary Time, Lent and Easter this year. The beautiful
setting of this part of Mass by Fr. Michael Joncas helps worshippers get in
touch with not only the rich heritage of the Church, but with their own
mystical side, as they sing the familiar words of the Lamb of God in an-
other language. This language once had great familiarity to many in the
church even though that is no longer the case. Latin has great signi! cance
for Catholics because it is part of the long history of the Church.
The sung Agnus Dei or Lamb of God is sung during the Fraction Rite. This
is when the Blessed Sacrament is divided so that all might receive commu-
nion, and it occurs right before all the faithful come forward to participate
in the communion procession. The communion procession is the part of
Mass during which every fully initiated Catholic participates by coming for-
ward in procession to receive the Body and Blood of Christ.
The idea that Christ is the Lamb of God comes from scripture, including
the Passover during the Exodus of the Jewish people. When they left Egypt
they marked their doorposts with the blood of the lamb that they had used
for their Passover meal (Ex 12: 21-23). This was to be a protection for them
on their journey, provided by God as part of the covenant they had made
with him. After Christ’s passion and death, and in light of the resurrection,
the earliest Christians (who were Jewish, as was Christ) began to see Christ
as the Passover lamb of a new creation.
Catholics today see the sacri! ce Christ made as the ! nal and ultimate sacri-
! ce, but the celebration of Mass each Sunday is the “unbloody” recreation of
that same sacri! ce. It is the covenant the Christians have with God through
Christ’s blood, shed on the cross, that gives them protection and nourishes
their own witness to the world. This covenant is invoked as all the members
of the assembly at any given Mass sing these important words asking for
God’s mercy and God’s peace before they come forward to receive that very
same Christ in the communion procession.

A New Year’s Resolution You Can Keep!Want to start the New Year in a way that will transform your work, your mar-
riage, your family, and your life? Are you ready to learn the quickest, surest,
and easiest way to holiness? In our hectic day and time, Saint John Paul ll
and Saint Mother Teresa of Calcutta knew that the quickest way to be trans-
formed into a saint is through a relationship with Our Blessed Mother, Mary.
Join us on Monday, February 12, as we begin a 33-day preparation for
Marian Consecration. Each day we’ll individually follow four great Marian
giants: St. Louis de Montfort, St. Maximilian Kolbe, St. Teresa of Calcutta and
St. John Paul ll. They’ll teach us the secrets to drawing closer to the Heart of
Jesus through the Heart of Mary. In our weekly meetings, we’ll share our in-
sights within our small group and then watch a thiry minute video. The video
by popular author and speaker, Fr. Michael Gailtley, MIC, brings our individual
re! ections and group experience into a clear and live-able focus.
If you want to transform your relationship with Christ, this a perfect New
Year’s Resolution!
There will be six meetings on Monday evenings from 6:30-8:00 p.m. Ses-
sions will run from 2/12 to 3/26 (no meeting 3/19 due to parish mission).
Consecration will be Sunday, March 25, the Feast of the Annunciation.
To register and order materials by January 29, please call Robin at 763-421-0333.
High School Youth Group Meets Wednesdays!High school students are invited to our Olympic-themed youth group
nights in January, 7:30-9:00 p.m. in the Refuge. Games, food, fun and more!

Stewardship Re! ection“Follow me and I will make you $ shers of men.” - MARK 1:17
Jesus’ call to “Follow me” is a call to all Christians! The call is in the here and now, in our present cir-cumstances, not when we think we are “ready” or have everything in order. Good stewardship of our God-given gifts means that things aren’t always going to go according to our schedule and that God has a much better plan in store for each of us.
Serving Our Families With Young ChildrenDuring the 10:30 a.m. Sunday Mass,
families are invited to have children
ages 1-3 in our parish nursery. The
