Overview

K ennesaw State University (KSU) is the third-largest university in Georgia, with more than 24,600 undergraduate and graduate students representing 128 countries. KSU is located just northwest of Atlanta in Cobb County near historic Kennesaw Mountain, allowing students to experience the best of Atlanta while enjoying the serenity of a 384-acre, beautifully landscaped pedestrian-friendly campus.

Accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS), KSU offers 97 bachelor's, master's and doctorate degree programs, including undergraduate degrees in education, health, business, the humanities, the social sciences, the arts, science, and math. The university’s graduate degree programs include nursing, business, information systems, conflict management, public administration, education, science, math, humanities, and professional writing. KSU’s expanding doctoral programs currently include a Doctorate of Education in Leadership for Learning, Doctorate of Business Administration, Doctorate of Philosophy in International Conflict Management, and Doctorate of Nursing.

Kennesaw State’s nursing program is the largest nursing program in Georgia. KSU’s nursing students have one of the highest passing rates on the statewide licensing exam and are highly sought-after in the medical community. The College of Education is the second-largest preparer of teachers in the state. And the Executive MBA program, housed in the Coles College of Business, is the second-largest program of its kind in the country and was recognized among the best in the world by CEO Magazine in 2009.

KSU’s national reputation has gained steam and was recognized by U.S. News & World Report's America’s Best Colleges issue in 2010 as one of the top universities in the region.

KSU’s first-year experience program has also been named an “Academic Program to Look For” by U.S. News for nine consecutive years. For the second consecutive year, the American Council of Trustees and Alumni listed KSU among only 19 universities in the country that scored an A in the group’s “What Will They Learn?” guide.

The university has committed itself to expanding the global experience of students, faculty, and staff through its Quality Enhancement Plan (QEP), known as the "Get Global" initiative, which began in 2007. This program focuses on increasing opportunities for international learning experiences. In spring 2009, KSU awarded its first Global Engagement Certification to graduate and undergraduate students. This certification recognizes students’ achievements in learning global perspectives and developing intercultural skills.

Consolidation

KSU/SPSU Consolidation In November 2013, the Georgia Board of Regents announced that Kennesaw State University will be merged with Southern Polytechnic State University (SPSU). SPSU is a public, co-ed, state university in

Marietta, Georgia, less than 10 miles south of KSU. SPSU has approximately 5,500 students, and its academic highlights include applied technical degrees such as architecture and engineering.

The new university will combine Kennesaw State’s population of 24,600 students and SPSU’s 5,500 students to a new total of 30,100 thousand students. This will advance Kennesaw State from the third-largest university in Georgia to the second-largest

university in Georgia.

The merge will combine the strengths of the two universities, resulting in a diverse array of programs. Technical knowledge and skills from SPSU, such as architecture, computing, and engineering, will be combined with KSU’s programs in the arts, humanities, sciences, business, and education to create a truly powerful university.

The merged university will be named Kennesaw State University, headed by KSU’s current President, Dr. Daniel Papp. Both campuses will be used for classes and activities, and KSU shuttles will transport students between campuses when necessary.

This consolidation aims to save expenses on administration, redirecting funds to educational programs, educational support programs, and research. Kennesaw State University is gaining a diversity of students, faculty, disciplines, and facilities that will enhance its already thriving educational ecosystem. In his 2014 State of the University address, President Papp proclaimed that the merge will create an “educational and economic powerhouse.”

March 24, 2014 National Conference on Undergraduate Research Oversight Committee 734 15th St NW, Suite 550 Washington, DC 20005 Dear NCUR Oversight Committee, We enthusiastically support Kennesaw State University’s (KSU) bid to host the 2018 National Conference on Undergraduate Research (NCUR). KSU has a long history of supporting undergraduate research/creative activity and other high-impact educational practices. For example, KSU:

• provides substantial funding to students and faculty to collaborate on projects and for travel to present their work; • hosts an annual Symposium of Student Scholars that attracts hundreds of students, faculty, staff, and community members to showcase

undergraduate research and creative activity; • hosts regional disciplinary conferences for undergraduate research and creative activity; • publishes an online journal of undergraduate research; and • incorporates foundational undergraduate research skills in its freshman seminars hosted by KSU’s First-Year & Transition Studies

Program, which has resulted in a documented increase in undergraduate research projects by first-year students. KSU is the third-largest university in the state of Georgia with nearly 25,000 students and a 328-acre campus. By 2018, our campus will have grown even larger due to an approved consolidation with nearby Southern Polytechnic State University, which has nearly 6,000 students and 230 acres. In total, we have the infrastructure to support at least 5,000 attendees. We have sufficient space to accommodate poster sessions, oral presentations, displays of visual art, and performances in several state-of-the-art buildings, 70% of which were built after 2002. We are also committed to providing the resources necessary to make the 2018 NCUR highly successful. We will urge faculty members to build NCUR into their course calendars and to expect students to attend sessions as part of course requirements. Faculty members from across campus are uniformly excited about the prospect of hosting NCUR and contributing to its success. Our location is a major strength. The conference has never been held in Georgia, a location that could attract a new audience to NCUR. KSU is close to the most active airport in the world, Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport, with over 80% of the U.S. population within a 2-hour flight. Almost all major airlines fly to Atlanta, and flights are relatively inexpensive compared to flights to smaller airports. In addition, KSU can provide non-stop, round-trip airport shuttle service at a steep discount (approximately $15 round trip). Hotel rooms are plentiful enough that all attendees could stay within a 12-mile radius of campus. Shuttle service between the hotels and campus would be easy and convenient given the short distance. There are numerous restaurants in the immediate vicinity of campus (20 in a one-mile radius) and thousands of restaurant options closer to Atlanta. KSU provides easy access to possible excursions, such as nature walks at Kennesaw Mountain or cultural options in nearby Atlanta. The primary organizers of the conference at the Center for Excellence in Teaching and Learning (CETL) are experienced conference planners. CETL has hosted the Georgia Conference on College & University Teaching for 21 years, the Southeastern Conference on the Teaching of Psychology for 26 years, and the Institute for New Faculty Developers the last two times it was held. Although none of these conferences is as large as NCUR, we understand the planning and work to host successful conferences and are confident we can succeed with NCUR. Finally, as one of two finalists for NCUR 2015, we have already done much groundwork to host NCUR 2018 (e.g., creating a budget; negotiating rates for shuttles; creating restaurant and hotel lists; selecting campus venues for registration, meals, and sessions; generating ideas for the Big Event, plenary speakers, and excursions). KSU has demonstrated its interest, familiarity, and skills to host NCUR as evidenced in our July 2012 proposal, during NOC’s site visit in September 2012, and in our presentation to NOC in October 2012. If you select us to host NCUR 2018, you will find KSU to be a vibrant academic community that warmly welcomes the nation’s undergraduate researchers. Sincerely,

Daniel S. Papp, Ph.D. W. Ken Harmon, DBA. President Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs

For such a large university, KSU’s campus is uniquely small, only 384 acres. While it can be easily walked from the north end to the south end in 15 minutes, walking time between the main buildings is usually only 5-10

minutes. The next three pages contain (a) a 2-D map of Kennesaw State University, (b) a 3-D map of Kennesaw State University, and (c) a map of the Arts District at

Kennesaw State University is 45 minutes from Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport in Atlanta, GA. Hartsfield-Jackson is the busiest airport in the world and a hub for many major airlines, including Delta. Atlanta is within a two-hour flight of 80 percent of the United States population, making it easy for most conference attendees to get here.

The drive from the airport to campus is very easy; Take I-85N to I-75N, and exit at Chastain Road (#271). The campus is directly off I-75 (campus can be seen from the highway).

In December 2009, Hartsfield-Jackson opened a convenient, state-of-the-art, 67.5 acre facility that houses all rental car company operations and vehicles. The rental car center includes two four-story parking decks, more than 8,700 parking spaces and a 137,000 square foot customer service center. The rental car center features 13 rental car agencies - Advantage, Airport, Alamo, Avis, Budget, Dollar, Enterprise, E-Z, Hertz, Sixt, National, Thrifty and Payless Rent a Car companies.

Antico Pizza Napoletanna1093 Hemphill Avenue Northwest Atlanta, GA 30318404.724.2333

It’d be possible to fall in love with Antico if the pizza was just OK. The feel of the place alone is enough to inspire instant infatuation long before a slice ever touches your lips: the sparse counter and the sassy Italian woman behind it; the rustic communal wooden table outfitted with bowls of salt, raw garlic and hot red peppers; the blaring opera music; the plate over the kitchen door with Jesus looking down at the diners. And that kitchen – with its cooks in kerchiefs, massive wood-burning ovens, orders shouted in Italian – hums with authenticity.

Vortex Bar & Grill878 Peachtree Street Northeast Atlanta, GA 30309404.875.1667

From its inception, The Vortex has been honored with “Best Burger” awards by a multitude of local and national publications. Additional accolades followed over the years, including awards for “Best Overall Liquor Selection in Atlanta,” “Best Bar Food,” “Best Veggie Burger,” “Best Beer Selection,” “Best Neighborhood Bar,” and “One of the Top 50 Restaurants in Atlanta.” All of this recognition was certainly nice, but the siblings never let it go to their heads. As long as their customers were happy, they were happy. As their reputation continued to spread, the partners began to get requests to be featured on television. The Vortex has appeared on Man vs. Food, Sunday Night Football, Rachel Ray and several other “top restaurants in the country”-themed shows.

Friday Event

The metro Atlanta area is home to many excellent local bands that can come for a“Black and Gold Battle of the Bands” (black and gold are the KSU colors). Pizza, chips, and soft drinks will be provided for attendees as well as games and raffles. Because KSU students will be attending this event, SABAC (Student Activities and Budget Advisory Committee) can provide some funding for this event (numbers may need to be capped in order to keep the event affordable for SABAC). The event can be held on either the

Campus Green or at KSU’s football stadium.

Kennesaw’s football stadium (officially Fifth Third Bank Stadium) is 16,000 sq. ft. and has 8,300 seats. Located less than a mile from campus, it is easily reached by KSU’s shuttles. For NCUR, the stadium may be used for a large event such as an outdoor

concert.

Undergraduate Research at KSU

“I just wanted to tell you how impressive the talks were at the Symposium last night. I heard amazingly intellectual presentations. I always thought I had been a good student as an undergrad ;) but I honestly don’t think I was anywhere near as put together as these students are. I am so glad that there is a forum honoring them and allowing them to blossom as

scholars.”

– Anne R. Richards, Ph.D., Associate Professor of English, Kennesaw State University, in response to the 2014 Symposium of Student Scholars.

Undergraduate research at KSU is thriving, with faculty and student research partnerships in every college across campus. Here are a few recent highlights:

• Dr. Letizia Guglielmo, Associate Professor of English, taught an undergraduate course titled “Women Writing the Web.” As a result of taking this course, undergraduate student Kimberly Wallace Stewart approached Dr. Guglielmo seeking a research opportunity.
