All Angels by the Sea- An Introduction

All Angels by the Sea Episcopal Church is a community of 224 communicants and an average Sunday

Attendance of 88. As one might expect we are older (77 years of age on the average) and married.

While we love children, we tend to see them when they visit their grandparents.

On the average, a member has been with our parish for 12 years. When asked, our members will tell

you that they are drawn by our:

Friendliness

Worship

Music

Location

Episcopal Identity

Just over half of our parishioners are year-round Longboat key residents. The remainder are either

“seasonal” or intermittent visitors.

Eighty percent of our congregation is retired. They come with a background in business, education, and

health care. When asked for the reasons for their continuing involvement at All Angels, the top choices

were:

Loyalty to the Episcopal Church

The Priest in Charge

Friendliness of the congregation

General ambiance and tone of the parish

When surveyed, our members do not want any significant changes to the worship service. A few

indicated an occasional service of Evensong and/or Morning Prayer.

A large majority of the parish said that church communications worked well and that the Outreach

Program focusing on charitable organizations in Sarasota and Manatee Counties was satisfying.

Our Parish Survey asked “what draws your involvement?” Responses were, in order,

Vestry

Various choirs

Ushers/Greeters

Our Parish Organizations:

All Angels by the Sea is an active and vibrant church. We provide many opportunities for involvement

and participation through a variety of organizations and committees. Using the tried-and-true SWEEPS

acronym (Service, Worship, Education, Evangelism, and Stewardship), here is a look at how we are

organized:

Service

o All Angels Grant Program. Recent Grants include:

$10,000 to UnidosNow, to provide low income, first generation Latino high

school students with guidance for entering college

$7,000 to Meals on Wheels of Manatee County

$5,000 to Children First, to strengthen at-risk children and families.

$5,000 to Tidewell Hospice

o Episcopal Church Women

Our ECW is known, both in the Church and the wider community, for their

strong dedication to outreach. They meet monthly, November through May, for

lunch, fellowship and an informative program or guest speaker. Our ECW plays

an important part in our parish outreach.

Worship

o Altar Guild: the work of our Altar Guild is vital to the beauty of our worship services.

The Guild sets up our Altar for all liturgies. We maintain linens and vestments, and we

purchase and arrange Altar flowers. We also maintain the kits for shut-in Communions.

o Centering Prayer: a Small group meets weekly to practice this ancient form of

meditative and contemplative prayer.

o Lay Ministry in Worship: We are an integral part of every worship service at All Angels.

We participate as greeters, ushers, lectors, chalice bearers, and servers. A specially-

trained and licensed group of Eucharistic Visitors take communion to the shut-ins.

o Music Program: Led by Dale Hooey who joined the Staff in April 2006, our Music

Program plays a vital part in our worship services. We enjoy the stunning renditions on

our Rodgers 940 Organ and a Clavinova. We are proud of our Musician’s contributions

made to the community through several well-received concerts open to the public.

Education

o Education Committee:

opportunities

Assist in the planning, publicity and other support needs. Our current program

offerings:

Fall Lectures

Advent Quiet Day

Priest in Charge’s Book Club

Lenten Lecture Series

Women’s Study and Discussion Group

Men’s Study and Discussion Group

Joint programs with neighboring religious communities

Evangelism: While not formally organized for Evangelism, we make the Mission of Jesus Christ

known through our engagement of the Apostle’s teaching and fellowship, in the breaking of

bread and in the prayers of our people.

Pastoral Care

o Caring Ministries Commission: One of the standing Commissions of the Vestry, the

Caring Ministries Commission seeks to offer an “in reach” ministry to members of our

community who may need a helping hand due to illness, death, age or infirmity.

o Dining Club: We meet monthly throughout the year. We might come together for a

pot-luck meal, meet at a local restaurant after cocktails at the host’s home, go for lunch,

to any number of other possibilities involving food and fellowship.

o Fellowship Commission: We provide fellowship opportunities for parishioners and

friends, such as:

The Dining Club (see above)

Theater and other cultural outings

Chinese New Year

“Welcome Back” and “Farewell” events honoring our seasonal members

Annual meeting Luncheon

o Newcomers and Hospitality Commission: We see ourselves as a warm and friendly

home. Our Greeters strive to make visitors feel included from the time they arrive at

the church entrance to the warm welcome extended by the Priest in Charge at the close

of the service. A weekly Coffee Hour provides an opportunity to get to know more

about us. A Welcome Table located in the church entrance displays recent newsletters,

brochures, and other informative materials.

Stewardship: We place the highest value upon Christian Stewardship and to that end the

whole Vestry serves as our Stewardship Committee. We believe that stewardship goes beyond

our commitment of time, talent, and treasure to encompass all facets of our life. Our support

has been generously given over the years, not only to build, maintain, and expand the parish,

but also to give to those in need beyond our doors. Time is given freely in all organizations that

make us a whole, living Church. We have a wealth of talent, and as a cause arises, we find the

answer in the natural endowments of our parishioners. This we strive to live out our personal

stewardship through our constantly expanding ministries with and beyond the parish.

A note on Finances: We consider prudent management of financial resources to be a very

important part of parish life. The focus is not only on day to day fiscal responsibility but also on

sustainability so that the parish will be there for future generations.

o Audit Committee: An annual internal Audit is conducted by volunteers. This is an

important check of our financial records, inventory and administrative procedures.

o Endowment Fund: We manage the Parish endowment which helps to ensure the

present and future financial stability of the parish. We sponsor educational programs

and advise individuals on the various ways and advantages of giving to the Church.

o Finance Committee: We develop and monitor the annual budget. We also recommend

financial policies and procedures to the Vestry. We support the Vestry in carrying out its

fiscal trustee responsibility. This includes oversight and guidance to all positions and

Committees responsible for income and spending.

o Property Committee: We oversee all aspects of our Church’s facilities and grounds,

including our computer systems, insurance, contracts, and inventory record. Along with

other volunteers, we are actively maintaining our physical plant and beautiful grounds.

In 2016, the Vestry commissioned a Capital Reserve Study of the grounds and facilities.

A 30-year plan created for the study insures that facilities remain strong and viable.

Other Assets

o Art Gallery: Located

next to the Narthex, the Gallery

provides a pleasing entry to the

church and a passageway to the

Parish Hall. The Gallery features

works by area artists on a rotating

basis. We earn a small commission,

donated to outreach in every work

that is sold.

o Library: We have a well-stocked and professionally organized Parish Library in the Parish

Hall. The ever-growing collection is maintained by volunteers.

o Memorial Garden: The Vestry and parish leadership realized that our property could offer a

very special place for those who choose cremation and would like to be inurned in an above-

ground memorial structure. The Vestry maintains policies governing reserved spaces, cost, etc.

Our Community:

Longboat Key is a barrier island located near the City of Sarasota. The Key has 12 thousand seasonal

residents. The peak season may see as many as 25 thousand. The average temperature is 73 degrees

and an average rainfall of 52 inches. Longboat Key lies between two counties (Manatee and Sarasota).

We were incorporated in 1955 and we are governed by a 7 member Town Commission and

administered by a Town Manager. We share a good ecumenical spirit. We are one of five Houses of

Worship including

o Longboat Chapel (non-denominational)

o St. Mary Star of the Sea (Roman Catholic)

o Temple Beth Israel

o Christ Church (Presbyterian)

Our History:

In today’s car-crazed culture where a car ride is just an Uber phone call away, it is hard to imagine that

at one time, not too many years ago, getting in a car and driving to church on a Sunday morning was a

hardship, especially on Longboat Key. In our early years the nation faced a gasoline crisis and

Episcopalians on the barrier Islands worshipped at the Church of the Redeemer in downtown Sarasota,

ten miles away. A local option became all the more important. Mission status was granted in 1979.

Sixty people attended services held at the Coast Federal Savings and Loan building, affectionately known

by worshippers as the “Upper Room”. Archdeacon Hoyt Massey docked his boat nearby and preached

the first sermon. He called the fledgling congregation “Lord’s Angels”. The congregation’s response was

to establish the mission as All Angels by the Sea.

A Word about the Diocese of Southwest Florida

Our Diocese is part of The Episcopal Church, and of the worldwide Anglican Communion. The Diocese of

Southwest Florida’s 78 congregations total over 30,000 baptized persons who share an exciting

pilgrimage of ministry and mission. The Diocese extends along the coast of the Gulf of Mexico, from

Brooksville in the north to Marco Island in the south. The Rt. Rev. Dabney Tyler Smith was installed as

Bishop in 2007, and in 2014 he was one of the four final candidates for Presiding Bishop. The Diocesan

offices and conference rooms are located at DaySpring, a beautifully wooded retreat and conference

center. Our Diocese has a relatively low apportionment (10%) versus other dioceses in TEC. For more

information, visit the website of the Diocese at www.episcopalswfl.org.

The Priest-in-Charge We Seek

For many parishioners, Longboat Key and the surrounding area mark a “paradise” home ending a rich

and rewarding work life and family-building years. All Angels by the Sea becomes a year-round or

seasonal church home to fully live out one’s “longevity journey”. Consequently, parish life at all Angels

is filled with worship, devotional educational and social activities found in most churches but with fewer

marriages or baptisms. We need a pastor who can relate to those in or nearing retirement/semi-

retirement that remain actively living out their faith in the parish, community and family while at times

facing the challenges of illness, physical impairment and tough choices as to when/where to relocate to

a retirement village or alternate care.

Ministry #1. While the Priest-in-Charge plays a key role in almost every church program, his/her

most important ministry is relating well to parishioners as they execute their leadership

responsibilities. He/she must take a caring interest in each parishioner’s faith journey and

personal challenges. In short, he/she must have strong interpersonal and pastoral skills.

Ministry #2: We have very high expectations for preaching from the pulpit. It must be biblically

based and insightfully related to issues of modern life. Our educational attainment level is well

above average. Sermons should challenge us to both think and be the “salt of the earth”.

Ministry #3: We have been a stable church of about 100 pledging units for many years. We

need to grow—to be a welcoming place for the many un-churched Christians on the island and

surrounding areas, especially those familiar with Anglican, Roman Catholic and Lutheran

traditions of worship. We must connect with 1) increasing numbers of professionals as they buy

into local “getaway residences” as they wind down their careers and 2) folks in later life who

seek deeper meaning to life. Our aging population is a mission field and we look for a pastor

who has the personal attributes that make it easy to reach newcomers.
