March 26, 2018

Dear Parents and Guardians, For the second year, Richland One will host SUMMER SOAR, a diverse array of summer camp, enrichment and academic programs. In this brochure, you will find a menu of our 2018 program offerings, along with criteria, features and registration information. As you will see, our SUMMER SOAR camps and programs will provide students with a wide array of unique opportunities and learning experiences, including taking a flight among the stars through space and aeronautics; creating delights from the garden through the culinary arts; reading to succeed through literary activities; taking a dip or dive through life-saving swimming lessons; or letting off some STE(A)M through science, technology, engineering, arts and math programs. Our SUMMER SOAR camps and programs are scheduled over a seven-week span. Whether students take advantage of a one-week program or spend the entire seven weeks with us, they are bound to find adventure, inspiration and discovery. Many of the programs will surround specific session themes. To ensure that the programs meet your scheduling needs and your child’s diverse interests, you are welcome to combine as many programs as you would like and take advantage of our early-bird and extended-day child care options. District-wide registration will be held March 26, 2018 through Friday, May 11, 2018. We encourage you to register early. Please visit our website for detailed descriptions of each camp, enrichment or academic program and to register: www.richlandone.org/SOAR. If you have questions or need additional information, feel free to call our SUMMER SOAR Hotline at (803) 400-1692.

With warm regards,

Craig Witherspoon, Ed. D.Superintendent

Summer SOAR 2018 • Summer Camps, Programs and Academic Sessions Page 14

What is SUMMER SOAR? SUMMER SOAR is a full-scale, cross-developmental level, and multi-faceted summer academic and enrichment “umbrella” of programs spanning the entire summer break period. SUMMER SOAR is not one program; rather, it is an array of summer programs and summer camp options offered by Richland One.

How do I register for camp sessions? To register for SUMMER SOAR camp sessions or programs, please review the program offerings included in the SUMMER SOAR brochure (pages 10-13). Additionally, SUMMER SOAR camp and program information is posted on the district’s website at www.richlandone.org/SOAR. (Note: Hyperlinks to specific camps and programs will be provided to assist you in navigating through the registration process).

How do I know if my child qualifies for the Read-to-Succeed (R2S) Camp Read-A-Lot Program? Students who qualify for Summer Reading Camp will receive invitations to the program from their schools. A registration form will be included with the invitation and must be returned to the school by the date specified on the form. Do SUMMER SOAR Programs operate on Fridays? No. SUMMER SOAR follows the established Richland One summer work schedule, which is Monday through Thursday. On Fridays, all Richland One schools and district offices will be closed. Select programs (to include, but not limited to, the Read-to-Succeed Camp Read-A-Lot programs) will offer off-site Friday field excursions and field exploratory options, while some child care vendors and program vendors will provide Friday off-site options. For specific details, please contact the respective camp or program point-of-contact listed in the SUMMER SOAR brochure (pages 10-13).

Is there a fee for the SUMMER SOAR programs? The SUMMER SOAR umbrella of summer camps and programs includes fee-for-service programs and no-cost programs. Please refer to the SUMMER SOAR brochure (pages ) for information pertaining to camp or program costs.

Are scholarships available for fee-for-Service programs? No. Scholarship opportunities are not available for fee-for-service programs, unless students qualify under a McKinney-Vento designation.

Will SUMMER SOAR programs operate the week of Fourth of July? No. During the SUMMER SOAR intercession week (July 2, 2018 – July 6, 2018), summer programs and camps will not operate. All Richland One district offices also will be closed during this period.

Are SUMMER SOAR programs open to students and adults? The SUMMER SOAR “umbrella” of summer camps and programs includes options that span from pre-kindergar-ten to adult learners. Please refer to the camp offerings (pages 4-9) which details the target audience for each camp or program.

Will transportation be provided? Yes, transportation will be provided for select programs. Please contact the program point of contact to learn if the specific camp or programs you are interested in offer home-to-school or school-to-home transportation.

Are extended-day or early-bird options available? Yes, but extended-day and early-bird options are available at the elementary level only. Contracted child care vendors will be hosted at each of the elementary cluster sites. These child care vendors welcome early-bird or extended-day program participants. Child care vendors will collaborate transitions with other site-based SUM-MER SOAR Programs to ensure the students’ transition from early bird to regular day or from regular day to extended day care. Early-bird and extended-day program offerings will be provided at a pro-rated fee set by the child care vendor. Early-bird sessions begin at 7 a.m. and extended-day sessions conclude at 6 p.m.

Can I combine programs (for example, to have a full-day SUMMER SOAR experience for my child)? Certain restrictions apply but, where allowable, students can participate in various programs at the designated cluster site. Please consult with the specific SUMMER SOAR program point-of-contact to discuss these options.

What is a “cluster site”? Why is the SUMMER SOAR program I am interested in not hosted at my child’s home school? In an effort to leverage resources, only designated schools will be open to host the array of SUMMER SOAR offerings at the chosen site. The selected cluster “hub” site will host the array of schools within the “horizontal” cluster. There will be six horizontal cluster sites, four middle-level cluster sites and seven high school cluster sites. Please refer to the SUMMER SOAR brochure (pages ) for cluster site information.

What does my child need to bring to any SUMMER SOAR program session camp/or program? For specific camp or program required materials, supplies, etc., please contact the respective camp or program point-of-contact listed in the SUMMER SOAR brochure (pages 10-13).

Will my child have access to his/her electronic device during the selected SUMMER SOAR program? Access will vary based on the SUMMER SOAR program or camp. For academic programs, electronic devices will be distributed to the students through a transfer from their home school site. The respective curriculum/activities of the SUMMER SOAR program will dictate whether DLE (Digital Learning Environment) devices will be utilized. If the devices are not provided, students who need access to technology will receive these resources through other means, such as through existing labs, virtual simulations, etc.

Will meal service be provided? Meal service and/or snacks will be provided for all SUMMER SOAR programs and camps. The meals and/snacks provided are provided through the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) Summer Feeding Program. Either breakfast/snack or lunch/snack options will be provided to camps and programs. The SUMMER SOAR meal/snack program is federally funded through the S.C. Department of Social Services that allows the district to serve meals to students during the afterschool and extended-year program. Additionally, as an amenity to ensure healthy living and eating, SUMMER SOAR host sites will sponsor summer meal programs where meals are provided for members of the community ages 18 and below.

Who should I call if I have questions? To ensure that parents/guardians and program participants receive optimal customer service, a SUMMER SOAR Hotline will open from 9 a.m. – 6 p.m. Monday, March 26 through Thursday, August 2. The SUMMER SOAR hotline is a resource to get questions answered and to receive information about how to navigate through the SUMMER SOAR menu of program options. The SUMMER SOAR Hotline number is (803) 400-1692.
