    2018 PMSA NATIONAL CONFERENCE

    CONFERENCE PROGRAMME

    Headline Sponsor:

  • EXPLORING THE THEME‘DIVERSITY IS THE STRENGTH OF AFRICA, NOT HER WEAKNESS’*.

The creativity that emerges from this diversity can be seen in the many unique exports of our continent, beyond our natural resources, that are increasingly being celebrated on the world stage not least of which are: writing, dance, contemporary art, and fashion - the latter being the inspiration behind our logo for this year’s conference. It draws on the Shweshwe design, a fabric of complex geometric shapes with origins that blend European, Arab and African influence and are now most strongly associated with Southern Africa. These are bright and flamboyant individual patterns that while unique and diverse, complement one another in an unexpected way when sewn together. Much like the people of our continent.

It’s only natural that Africa’s creativity and diversity spills into how we do business, and how we manage projects.

The spirit then, of the 2018 edition of our PMSA Biennial National Conference is to acknowledge the unique characteristics of Africa’s people – diversity; creativity; tolerance for ambiguity, uncertainty and change; patience; collaboration - and how these attributes contribute to project management. It’s about the way we channel global knowledge in response to African challenges, illustrated through case studies and good practice, and the knowledge we uncover through research, experience and even trial and error, that broadens our understanding of people, practices, concepts and methodologies that can be applied to our projects.

(*This statement was made in a guest article in City Press late in 2017, by academic and author, Julian Kunnie.)

The PMSA 2018 Conference aims to promote knowledge and insights that assist project managers to build / enhance their toolkit with a diversity of ideas, techniques and methods. It also aims to reinforce the value in people and identify how one can elicit the best of what people have to offer, because, after all, a project without people is just a plan.

The conference looks at trends and practices, relevant to the theme across a spectrum of industries and types of projects. While the main focus is on what has been home-grown and / or applied specifically in projects on the African continent, new knowledge derived globally is also considered as a contribution to good practice.

  • Dear DelegateThank you for joining us at the PMSA National Conference in 2018. If this is your first time at one of our events, we hope you gain great value from the programme we have created and the interactions you have with your peers. If you are coming back for a second or third time, or have been an even more frequent attendee than that, we thank you for your ongoing support and hope that the event lives up to your positive experiences of the past.We know how difficult it is to tear yourself away from your project responsibilities to attend events such as conferences, but as a professional you will be aware of how important these are for benefits like gaining new knowledge, learning from your peers, affirming or adapting your outlook, and generally opening your busy mind to fresh perspectives. We appreciate that, given the current economy, your investment to attend is not a small one and we have done our best to deliver the experience that you expect. Having delivered this conference, with many adaptations, since 1999, and having the Wanderers Club host it for the third time running, one would think it becomes an easier project to run each year. In truth, we face new challenges and encounter new opportunities every two years, making our event a mostly unique project each time. We like to acknowledge that uniqueness with a dedicated theme. Looking back at our past themes certainly gives a snapshot into how our industry has transitioned in the past 20 years.

When PMSA was recognised by SAQA as the professional body for project management across industries in South Africa in 2013, we became even more mindful of the role we play as an autonomous entity that is in the unique position to recognise, contextualise and guide with the global project

  • PMSA 2018 CONFERENCE PROGRAMMEKEY TO PROGRAMME ICONS

PLENARY SESSIONS / THOUGHT LEADERSHIPPresentations by experts and thought leaders that pack a punch. They begin by examining the overall theme of diversity, then become increasingly relevant to project and programme management.

PEER-REVIEWED RESEARCHThese sessions provide a platform for those engaged in academic research to present their peer-reviewed work to their industry peers, fostering the growth of South Africa’s own body of knowledge.

BEST PRACTICESBefore investing in your next service, system or process, listen to what makes sense for your industry or environment from those who have found ways to achieve similar objectives or overcome similar challenges.

CASE STUDIES An important medium through which to share knowledge is in the form of case studies. By taking the audience through the highlights, challenges, solutions and outcomes of major projects, those at the coal-face get to pass their learning on.

NETWORKINGProject Managers know it’s essential it is to get out of the office and interact with peers, be it to find like-minded people with whom to share your ideas and experiences, or to put the word out that you are looking for new opportunities.

WORKSHOP / MASTER CLASSESParticipate in a specially designed master class is facilitated by a thought leader, is interactive and interrogates a subject in more detail than a typical presentation

EXPOSee the Career Path for project administrators, project, programme and portfolio managers come to life in an interactive exhibit featuring those service providers you will seek during your career, in the context of your career stage, and short presentations making sense of designations, qualifications and other milestones in your career progression..

FOR THE PUBLIC GOOD – NEW THINKING ON ENHANCING INCLUSION AND SOCIETAL BENEFIT IN PROJECT MANAGEMENT PRACTICEThe project profession is maturing. In the UK it has recently gained chartered status. Historical factors within practice are increasingly being challenged. It is unsurprising that diversity and inclusion is increasingly more prominent in project management discourses. This presentation will explore how a paradigm-shift and reframing of the diversity discourse, to encompass a broader perception of inclusiveness can alter current approaches and practice. This enhanced perspective of diversity and inclusion will be addressed through three interrelated elements:• An altered approach to value • A reassessment of practice and the public good • Observations on new directions underpinned by a more holistic approach and

existing good practice.Venue: Ballroom Speaker: Dr Teri Okoro, TOCA and P3M Africa

  • ARE PROJECT TEAM MEMBERS IN ICT PROJECTS ACCORDED KEY STAKEHOLDER STATUS?There are diverse stakeholders for projects in the information and communication technology (ICT) field including project team members who are critical in achieving set goals for a project. Management of stakeholders includes addressing their needs, expectations and concerns, however, project managers pay little attention to the needs and concerns of project team members, which has created a number of challenges for projects. This paper’s aim is to investigate the extent to which project team members in the South African ICT sector are accorded their rightful status as key project stakeholders, and offers a number of recommendations.Venue: Marathon Author: Robert Hans, ICT Faculty, Tshwane University of Thechnology

    15:00 - 15:45 | BREAKAWAY SESSION 2

STAKEHOLDER CHALLENGES IN BRIDGING THE DIGITAL DIVIDEUlwembu Business Services was recently appointed as the new service provider for the City of Tshwane’s public wi-fi service, quite an undertaking due to the vandalism and other issues that resulted in a number of the hotspots not working earlier this year. In this case study, Ulwembu speaks of the stakeholder challenges and lessons learned on a project that promises to bridge the digital divide in the country’s capital city.Venue: Ballroom Speaker: Mbasa Yenana, Solutions and Innovation Executive, Ulwembu Business Services

GREAT PROJECT MANAGERS HAVE GREAT NETWORKSResearch shows that high performing project managers build strong networks and relationships within and outside their organisations.Having great networks is not about the size but the quality of the network you engage with. Diversity – reaching out to people and groups that you don’t normally engage with is a critical part of creating exceptional networks. This presentation looks at the importance of networking for project managers to support their projects but also examines why and how networks are so important for creating supportive structures which aid professional development and provide personal support and motivation. The presentation builds upon ideas presented at the Western Cape conference where Louise presented on ‘Changing the way Project Managers Learn.Venue: Marathon | Speaker: Louise Worsley, Pi Cubed

  • APPLYING CHANGE MANAGEMENT IN AN AGILE MANNER WITHIN A PROJECTThis presentation is about agile change and explores the overlap of Project Management, Agile Management and Change Management by unpacking a case study within a SAP HR Training project at the City of Cape Town. Grant started on the project in 2017 and after a year of high quality trainings and great delivery with high levels of client satisfaction, he recognised that the resistance to training by the end users was due to a gap not addressed, namely Change Management. Grant approached a top Change Management coach and within weeks had developed a Change Impact Analysis, a Stakeholder Analysis and a Change Management Strategy that would take the project to another level of success and quality. Venue: Ballroom | Speaker: Grant Hamel, Consultant, Business Coach and Project Manager

MANAGING PROJECTS DURING AN ECONOMIC DOWNTURN: PERSPECTIVES FROM BOTSWANAThe past decade has seen Africa like the rest of the world marred with the impacts of an economic downturn. Botswana as a country in southern Africa has equally been affected. The country’s over reliance on diamond mining slowly became a problem that affected the gross domestic product of the country with some of its larger mines downsizing while others ceased operations. This decline in financial returns to the country led to a tightening in spending and a decrease in project funding by government (the largest investor), private sector and financing institutions. This presentation focuses on development with emphasis on construction projects and how diversity in professional skills and qualifications can and have enabled projects to proceed during an economic downturn.Speaker: Chabo Mbikiwa, Project Manager, Commercial Projects: TIME Projects, Botswana

  • PROJECT MANAGEMENT FOR LEGAL MATTERS – SPECIFIC ASPECTS AND CAREER OPPORTUNITIES FOR PROJECT PROFESSIONALSFor a long time, in-house legal teams, attorneys and other legal service providers applied the principles and tools of project management to legal matters. However these days, a rapidly changing legal, regulatory and business environment, coupled with smaller budgets for legal advisors and, limited internal resources, necessitate a paradigm shift. “Legal Project Management (LPM)” is the talk of the town. What are the specific aspects to look out for that are unique to the legal sector and how can project professionals benefit from this trend?Venue: Marathon Speaker: Ignaz Fuesgen, Director KOHMAP Consulting

STAKEHOLDER ENGAGEMENT IS THE KEY TO REALISING THE BENEFITS DEFINED IN THE BUSINESS CASEMany articles rue the fact that much is made of Benefits Realisation, yet very few initiatives manage to deliver them. Heather has noticed that a lack of Change Management is blamed for the failure. There are very good arguments from Gartner and OGC for the Business Case to be the control document throughout the life-cycle of the project. The presentation includes ideas on why we say the business case should replace the project charter in order to support project success and includes case studies and industry best practices.Venue: MarathonSpeaker: Heather van Wyk, Business Programme Manager

This can be done on flipcharts and/or large sheets of paper on a wall or board, and the graphic recorder captures key phrases, symbols, words and images that reflect the conversation content and intent. It is an emergent process: The graphic record develops as the conversation emerges and develops. It fosters participation, connection and interest as participants engage with the evolving illustration of their contributions. This is a useful tool for people managing project teams, enabling them to harness collective intelligence and make it visible.
