2018 CUNY Student Experience Survey
Survey Administration The Student Experience Survey (SES) is administered by the City University Office of Institutional Research and Assessment every other year. The 2018 SES student population was a random selection of Baruch College undergraduates enrolled in a degree/certificate program in Spring 2018 who were 18 years of age or older. The survey was administered through campus email during the Spring 2018 semester between March and April, including an initial survey invitation and several reminders. The initial email invitation was sent to 7,221 Baruch College students. A total of 1,834 completed surveys were returned for a response rate of 25.4%. Highlights of survey findings:
Socio-economic Status:
• Thirty-nine percent of Baruch College students are the first-generation in their family to attend college (Pg.41).
• Thirty-eight percent report having household income of less than $30,000 (Pg.43). • More than half of Baruch College students, at 56%, report that they have a job that
pays them for their work (Pg.2). • Of those students who work, 50% of Baruch College students work 21 hours or more
per week (Pg.3). • Of those students who work, 34% percent of Baruch College students report that
working for pay has a negative effect on academic performance. This compares to 27% who report working for pay has a positive effect on academic performance (Pg.4)

Course Offerings:
• Students agree or strongly agree that Baruch should offer more evening courses (42%), more weekend courses (35%), more fully online courses (47%) and more hybrid courses (56%) (Pg.5).
• While 49% would like to take a course at another CUNY college, only 9% did using the
CUNY ePermit System (Pg.9).
• Thirty-eight percent of students were not able to register for every course, and of these students, 54% could not because there were no seats. Other reasons students could not registered for a course include unable to fit into schedule (13%) and could not get permission to take course (12%) (Pg.8).
Experiential Learning Opportunities: • Forty-three percent said they did not participate in any Experiential Learning
Opportunities (ELO). Of these students, the two biggest barriers are not enough time (60%) and did not receive enough information to participate (34%) (Pgs.15-16).

• The most popular student services used during the semester are the Library (94%), Computer labs (78%), Bookstore (70%) and Academic Advisement (60%) (Pg17-18).
• Of those students who used the student services, 49% disagreed or strongly disagreed that Career Planning and Placement provides adequate resources to help, while 56% disagreed or strongly disagreed that Tutoring Services provided adequate resources (Pgs.19-21).
• Dissatisfied/Very Dissatisfied levels on Academic Advising and Tutoring varied:
Dissatisfied levels for advisors being knowledgeable and helpful were at 10% while dissatisfaction levels for tutoring were much lower, at only 3%, for being knowledgeable and helpful. (Pgs.19-20).
• Dissatisfied/Very Dissatisfied levels varied on student health services. Only 4% were
dissatisfied with the Health Services Center being knowledgeable and helpful (Pg.20) but 62% were dissatisfied that the Health Services had adequate resources available (Pg.22).

Thinking of one course you could not register for this semester, which of the following best describes the reason you were not able to register for that course? (Select one)Advisors told me I could take the class, but when i tried registering it didn't allow me. I was also very confused on which courses I could take that are applicable to my major. As a transfer student of this semester, I had tighter time to register class than other students
BECAUSE THE FUCKING EPERMIT CUNTS WOULD LET INTERMEDIATE ACC TRANSFER OVER AND FILL A INTRO ACC REQUIRMENT, FUCKING SCUM BAGS, THIS SCHOOL IS SHIT , STUDENT FRIENDLY MY DICK. FUCK OUTA HERE WITH THAT BULLSHIT. AND I STILL HAD TO PAY.... FOR LITERALLY NOTHING, SO FUCK YOU BARUCH AND YOUR SHIT CAMPUS, CANT EVEN FIX THE ELEVATORScertain classes were scheduled for the same time as other major required classes.Classes chosen for meCould not afford to take the classCould not pay for it.Course was close due to los registrationECO 4000: Accounting majors are not allowed to take it.Fee that was external to tuition.First semester, so I'm not too bothered by it.I am a transfer studentI am still waiting on the transcript evaluations from my previous schoolI couldn't afford itI couldn’t afford to take another classI got the class but it was cancelled
I had the class in my wait list but the school did not process my dropped class quick enough for me to add It
I had to take some general education courses first before being able to register for the course I want to takeI registered late so there were limited selections that fit my 9-5 M-F scheduleI think it’s very cruel that not letting students to chose their major because of gpa requestment , like example, econ4000 is hardest class I’ve been taken , but most of us don’t understand what we’re doing in class, and the average scores are lowest compare with other class, I wish dpt can change this requirement, it’s a top hardest class than any classI was dropped from the class with professor TBA on my perfect timing and day with TWELVE days before class starts, and just barely managed to get another time. Meanwhile, the class and time I was dropped for was reopened by another professor and filled immediately. Fun.Incoming Freshman- schedule was standardIt wasn't given in weekendsMath summer class was canceled.MoneyNo classes offered with the credits I neededno seats

Thinking of one course you could not register for this semester, which of the following best describes the reason you were not able to register for that course? (Select one)
Our school chooses block schedules for the first semester of each incoming freshman's academic careerProfessor dropped me from the list, weeks after I enrolled in the classRequired core for every god damm classScholarship money came in late, and had no help.Seats were available but not for the time I was available to take the class. The class is offered in the middle of the day at the most inconvenient hourThe course was offered, but no physically class to attend. It was only offered online and the course is very different and doesn't suit my learning style. The course was offered, but was then cancelled. The registrar did not do their work well to register me in the class even though I submitted all required documents one month before the registration day!The times conflicted with all the other major classes to choose fromThey never posted the dates/times (not even after the semester began)Time conflictwhen it was time for orientation, most classes were closed already

Q19 Why I did not take a course at another CUNY college using the ePermit system? All my classes were available at my collegeAll the courses I wanted to take at other CUNY’s were not allowed. Example: The science and math are rather difficult for me as a com student and are not easy at all at Baruch. I tried to get a science and math requirement done at other CUNYs but it wouldn’t have been accepted.Applied several times and was never given a response. As a transfer student, we are only allowed to use ePermit after our first year in the school. At Baruch if you've taken the class already at Baruch then an ePermit system isn't allowedAt that last minute, I decided against itBaruch has restrictions for epermit students and as a transfer student I did not meet them.Baruch wants math courses to be exclusive at Baruch I don’t know why but it’s horribleBecause not all epermit credit is accepted for the major classes
Being on probation I couldn’t take classes that I wanted to catch back up and not still be behind in my schoolingBy the time my Epermit got approved, the class was already full.Changed my mind.Changed the e-permit last name and gpa limited.Class wasn’t availableclasses i wanted to take for epermit was not availableClasses were fullClasses were full and closed when I attempted to do soCommutecomplicatedConsidering it because of lack of seats availableCourse at other college cancelled after i registered for itCourses were not given at other collegesDid not have a GPA at the timedid not need to yetDid not want to traveldid not work out with scheduleDidn't comply with my time requirementsDidn’t get the chance toDidn’t know which class to takeDidnt had the class i want at a reasonable timeDidnt really want itDifficultydon't know how to use epermit systemDon't need to at the momentDon’t know how to do it after searching it

Q19 Why I did not take a course at another CUNY college using the ePermit system?Haven't tried applying for one yet.Haven’t had the opportunity yetHaven’t needed toI already transferred from another CUNY college so I didn't really feel the need to use ePermit because I have experienced what other CUNYs are like.I am open to it but I have had all of my needs met by Baruch thus far.I am waiting until next semester to take an epermitI applied for an epermit for summer 2018 classes but I have not gone through with it yetI applied for for Epermit but I dropped it right away.
I came from a suny school and wasn't familiar with cuny system; never had to take classes at a cuny schoolI couldn't decide whether the better class was worth change in location or not.I decided not to because of inconvenience in travelingI did not consider it, but plan on doing so this summer.I did not have room in my scheduleI did not qualifyI didn’t realize I could until as if recentlyI didn’t want toI don’t want toI ended up taking a semester offI got cleared to take my class, didn’t need to do an ePermit
I got the epermit only to find out that that class was not being offered at the college next semesterI have not tried to use epermitI have only 4 thousand level classes and they should be taken at BaruchI haven't been at Baruch College or any other cuny schools long enough to make use of that opportunity however I was planning on using an e-permit for one of courses in the future.I haven't figured out how to use the e-permit system on my own.I haven't needed to but I plan to this summer.I havent been wanting to take a epermit classI know about ePermit system but not qualifiedI like my college moreI need to take the credits left at Baruch onlyI need to wait 2 semesters in order to apply for ePermit.I needed the class to be at my college not at another collegeI pride myself on taking my courses at my College - Baruch.I simply ended up deciding not to in the end.I still working on creating a plan for myself and do not know yet which exact courses I would like to take in other CUNYI submitted epermit request but had no responseI want to take econ 4000 in another school it may be easyI was able to take all my courses at Baruch

I was already at max credits and could not afford to take another class without overloading on credits.I was doubting on the performance of the other collegeI was going to take a courses at another CUNY college but the scheduale was not convinientI was told that the course will not count towards the 30 credits minimum at this campus.I was unable to register due to the class being fullI will beI'm a transfer student that's close to graduating, and I need 45 credits at Baruch. Doing an ePermit would not allow me to meet the 45 credit criteria at Baruch.I’m currently trying to apply for an epermitIt took forever for me to get accepted for an ePermit, and when I did, the classes i wanted were all taken. Q19 Why I did not take a course at another CUNY college using the ePermit system?Registering for classes was unclearschedule conflicts or inconvenient schedulesent in a submission but was never given back a response. So far all the classes I've need is at my schoolStill don’t know which courseSystem was extremely tedious and was a long process for verification.
taking a course at a different cuny won't always allow that course to be counted as course for baruch. Calculus is an example, i could take calculus at brooklyn but baruch won't allow it because it doesn't follow 100% of the curriculum, even though the courses that are advanced and "require calculus" such as Game Theory or FIN 3000 or any 4000 level course only use derivatives which we cover in Pre calculus. The business classes that I have to take are mandatory to take at your home school. The course is not offered all semestersThe location of the college wasn’t as convenient anymorethe process is complicated and not a lot of guidance or clear instructions. Plus, it takes a long time for the ePermit to go through. By the time it does, I already lost the class.the process was confusingThe process was longThe registrar at the college where I wanted to take class did NOT do their job well to register me in the class even though I submitted all required documents one month before. There was a time conflict with my schedule
There wasnt any college closer to me for me to take it and they didnt show the time or day the class would be.Time conflictTiming issues. To much of a struggleTo tke the epermit i do not have the travel time it would have taken to get thereToo early in my college education.Too much hassleTook too long for e-permit so class filled up at the time slot I wantedWaiting for my GPA to show upwas able to take same class at my schoolwhen I heard the program?I only remain courses that require to take at BaruchTotal
