It's that time of year when we settle back into our “regular” routines. Part of that rou- tine for many people is returning to a regular schedule of attending worship. Already attendance has begun picking up from the summer numbers! But it's not really about the numbers, is it? Our former bishop was fond of saying “We count people because people count.” For me, attending worship is about strengthen- ing relationships – our relationships with one another and with God. It's about disci- pline and the development of beneficial habits. It's about learning all we can about how to be disciples and how to be the church. It's about the adoration and praise of our Creator, our Redeemer, and our Sustainer. It's about giving thanks for all that's been given to us. It's about celebrating with those who are joyful and mourning with those who are grieving. It's about preparing ourselves to be the body of Christ in a world needing to experience forgiveness, redemption, and grace. It's about apprentic- ing to build the Kingdom of God and recognizing it when we do catch a glimpse. On August 5, we had our first meeting of the congregational steering committee. It was well-attended, and we spent a little over two hours identifying a variety of issues and needs of the church. My biggest concern, however, is that we came away from the meeting with no list of action items and no proposed date for a future meeting. Perhaps the intent was to turn it back onto the committees to take whatever direction they felt was appropriate. That concerns me because it doesn’t exhibit a comprehen- sive vision or forward motion. That’s the same thing we’ve been doing all along, and a wise one once said, “If you keep doing the same things you’ve always done, you’re going to get what you’ve always got.” Unless we begin moving in some direction, whatever that direction may be, we cannot build momentum. Perhaps people are tired, perhaps they’re afraid, perhaps our vision lacks clarity. Whatever the case, I’d like to invite everyone reading this to pray for a vision for our church. As one of our members said at the meeting, “Prayer is the most powerful tool we have at our dispos- al.” In fact, with that in mind, we have put together a signup sheet for people who want to gather for prayer and to identify the times they might be available. The sign- up is available on the ushers’ cabinet in the back of the sanctuary if you would like to add your name and availability, or you may call the office to do so. Friends, we’re all in this together, and it’s part of the process that there will be disa- greements and anxiety, especially as we implement any changes we deem neces- sary. The important thing is, however, that we are all part of a family - The Family of God. And as family, we can work through the challenges with love for one another and move forward to a place where others will be welcomed into the family. The apostle Paul reminds us: “We know that all things work together for good for those who love God, who are called according to his purpose.” (Romans 8:28) and “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” - (Philippians 4:13). May these be our watchwords in the months to come. See you Sunday! Blessings, Pastor Kim

2018 Thoughts from Pastor Kim School has started, and even though the calendar doesn't say it yet, summer is over. It's that time of year when we settle back into our “regular” routines. Thank you to our Wyandotte Youth Group who collected and distributed care packages to homeless people in the community this summer and also took time to volunteer at the Hope Center KC, an agency that works with youth and children on Kansas City’s East side.

Also a Big Thanks for those who donated school supplies and Helped the teachers at Claude Huyck Elementary School

prepare their rooms. Because of your generosity and hard work,

students in our community will have a better opportunity for success.
