ASAH, DRUCE!

Junior guard Druce Asah has been a tremendous addition to the Roadrunners’ roster, leading the team with 14.8 points per game through four games. Asah is coming off a game-high and season-high 17 points at Chadron State, and has gone for double-figures in all four of the Road-runners’ games so far. Additionally, Asah was 7-8 from the free throw line at Chadron State on Dec. 1 after shooting just one total free throw in the previous three games.

NEW KIDS ON THE BLOCK

This season’s roster sports quite a bit of new blood, to the tune of 83.7% of the Roadrunners’ scoring coming from newcomers so far this sea-son (freshmen, transfers and redshirt freshmen).

OH MY GOSH, IT’S McINTOSH

Redshirt junior Kendall McIntosh is making an immediate impact for the Roadrunners in his first season on the court after redshirting last year. The 6-8, 215 lb. forward has scored in dou-ble-digits in all four games for the Roadrunners (13.0 ppg), leading the team in field goal percent-age (min. 3 FGM/game) at 53.1% and blocks per game at 1.8.

WORKIN’ OVERTIME MSU Denver has played four games so far during the 2018-19 season, and two of them have re-quired an extra period to decide the winner. MSU Denver is 1-1 in those contests, with each coming against a school that was receiving votes in the NABC Top 25.

BEATING THE BEST MSU Denver’s first win of the season came on Nov. 24 against Texas A&M-Commerce, a team that was picked to win the Lone Star Conference, ranked No. 25 in the D2SIDA national poll, and was receiving votes in the NABC poll.

DOUBLE-DOUBLE TROUBLE

Roadrunners guard Enrique Cortés Zotes recorded a double-double against Texas A&M-Commerce with 16 points and 10 rebounds. It was just the third career double-double for the 6’3” guard. The others came vs. Northwest Nazarene on Nov. 24, 2017 (12 points, 10 rebounds) and at College of Idaho on Nov. 21, 2015 (10 points, 11 rebounds). Interestingly enough, all three of Cortés Zotes’ career double-doubles have come in the month of November.

WELCOME TO OUR BLOCK PARTY

McIntosh’s blocks per game mark of 1.8 currently ranks second in the RMAC to Otas Iyekekpolor of Fort Lewis (2.0 bpg), but he’s not the only effec-tive shot-swatter for the Roadrunners. Cain van Heyningen blocked four shots vs. Stanislaus State in MSU Denver’s season opener on Nov. 16, which ties for the second-best individual single-game total by an RMAC player this season. Addition-ally, MSU Denver’s nine blocks against Stanislaus State counts as the second-best total for an RMAC team in a single game this season.

MR. CLUTCH

Redshirt freshman Marcus Jefferson was in-credibly clutch in MSU Denver’s win over Texas A&M-Commerce on Nov. 24, coming up big in multiple key moments. Jefferson scored five straight points to put the Roadrunners up 21-15 early, hit a 3-pointer to put MSU Denver up 49-48 with 6:24 to play, made two FT to put MSU Denver up 58-55 with 25 seconds left, then made 4 FT in the last 34 seconds of overtime to help seal the victory.

SPREADING IT AROUND

In the Roadrunners’ four games so far, the team has had three different leading scorers: Druce Asah (Stanislaus State, at Chadron State), Kendall McIntosh (Northwestern Oklahoma State) and Enrique Cortés Zotes (Texas A&M-Commerce).

MSU DENVER HEAD COACH MICHAEL BAHLThere is one common denominator for many of the most successful seasons in the spectacular history of MSU Denver men’s basketball: the pres-ence of Michael Bahl.

The former Roadrunners star and national leader in 3-point percentage begins his second season as Metropolitan State University of Denver’s men’s basketball coach in 2018-19.

Bahl followed the program in his youth as the Roadrunners, led by coach Mike Dunlap, went 166-33 over six seasons with national championships in both 2000 and 2002 as well as a Final Four trip in 1999. Bahl joined the program as a player for the 2003-04 season and played on teams that went 110-21 over four seasons, with two appearances in the Elite Eight. He returned to the program as an assistant coach for the 2010-11 season and during seven years as an assistant, he was a part of teams than went 173-50.

Heading into the 2018-19 season, with Bahl serving as a player, assistant or head coach, the Roadrunners have compiled a record of 298-85 (.778).

YEAR-BY-YEAR BREAKDOWN

2018-19• Guided the Roadrunners to their first victory of the season on Nov. 24 over Texas A&M-Commerce, who was receiving votes in the NABC poll and ranked No. 25 in the D2SIDA poll while also picked to win the Lone Star Conference.

2017-18• In his first season at the helm of the program, Bahl led MSU Denver to a 15-14 record and a tie for fifth place in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference with a 14-8 conference record. • Helped guard Cameron Williams earn First Team All-RMAC honors after he averaged 21.5 ppg (second in the RMAC), shot 48.1% from the field, hit 40.8% of his 3-point attempts, and recorded 1.7 steals per game (second in the RMAC).• Guided MSU Denver to a big road win at Colorado School of Mines on Dec. 16, 67-60.• Led the Roadrunners to a berth in the RMAC Tournament, where they lost a close game to Adams State in the quarterfinal, 64-61.
