Most recently, Izzo led Michigan State to its fourth-straight regular-season Big Ten Championship. MSU is just the fourth school in Big Ten history to win four-straight league titles. Izzo’s accom- plishments are even more impressive when you consider the fact that All-Ameri- cans and NBA first-round draft picks Mateen Cleaves and Morris Peterson are gone from the 2000 National Champion- ship team. The 65 wins over the last two years are the greatest two- year total in the history of the Big Ten. In the Final Four, MichiganState defeated Wisconsin for the fourthtime in the season. The Spartans thencaptured their second NCAA title inschool history by defeating Florida, 89-76.

The road to the national champion-ship was paved by the two staples of allIzzo-coached teams: rebounding anddefense. The Spartans led the nation inrebound margin (+11.7), two reboundsahead of second place Stanford (+9.7).Defensively, the Spartans ranked nation-ally at No. 8 in scoring defense (58.9)and No. 22 in field goal percentage de-fense (.394). Michigan State also rankedamong the nation’s leaders in scoringmargin (5th, 15.1), field goal percentage(25th, 47.4) and free throw percentage(27th, 73.5).

With back-to-back trips to the FinalFour, Izzo has established himself as oneof the best coaches in the NCAA Tourna-ment. Among active coaches, Izzo ownsthe highest NCAA Tournament winningpercentage at .857 (12-2). Duke’s MikeKrzyzewski is second at .781.

Under Izzo’s direction, MichiganState has established itself as the classprogram in the Big Ten Conference. Overthe past three seasons, MSU has posteda 41-7 league record and a winning per-centage of 85.4, the highest over a three-year period since the 1974, ’75 and ’76Indiana teams (.960).

During the 1998-99 season, Izzo di-rected the Spartans on a magical run tothe program’s first appearance in theNCAA Final Four since 1979 and onlythe third in school history. Along the way,the team left its mark in the school’s

HEAD COACH TOM IZZOrecord books. Under Izzo’s guid-ance, Michigan State posted arecord of 33-5, setting a Big Ten Con-ference and school record for mostwins in a season. For his efforts,Izzo was named the BasketballTimes National Coach of the Yearand the National Association of Bas-ketball Coaches (NABC) District 11Coach of the Year.

The road to St. Petersburg, Fla.,began with the first and secondrounds of the Midwest Region in Mil-waukee, Wis. After an easy first-round victory over Mount St. Mary’s,MSU defeated Mississippi, 74-66,to advance to the school’s second-consecutive Sweet 16. In the Mid-west Regional semifinal game in St.Louis, Mo., MSU earned a hardfought 54-46 victory over Oklahomathat set up a meeting with peren-nial power Kentucky for a trip to theFinal Four. After trailing Kentuckyat the half, Michigan State wouldbattle back to a 73-66 victory and aberth in the Final Four. Although Izzoand the Spartans would eventually loseto No. 1 Duke, they had establishedMichigan State as a basketball power-house.

Throughout the 1998-99 Big Ten sea-son, Michigan State established itself asthe class program of the conference. Izzodirected the school to its second-straightBig Ten title and the eighth in school his-tory. The Spartans followed up a 15-1 BigTen regular season by capturing their firstBig Ten Tournament championship. The15 league wins tied a school record formost victories in conference play, whilethe Spartans’ 93.8 winning percentage es-tablished a school record.

Izzo’s Spartans were equally impres-sive at the national level. Big things wereexpected as the Spartans were rankedin the preseason top five by both majorpolls. By the end of the regular seasonMichigan State held a No. 2 ranking byboth the Associated Press and USA To-day/ESPN. MSU would finish the yearranked third, the highest showing by aSpartan team since the 1978-79 squadearned a No. 1 ranking. Nationally, Michi-gan State was No. 2 in rebound margin(+9.3) and ninth in scoring defense (59.5).In addition, the Green and White rankedamong the nation’s best in scoring mar-gin (12th, 12.2) and field goal percentage(21st, .473).

Whereas MSU’s success in 1998-99 was expected, the Spartans took thecollege basketball world by storm in 1997-98. Izzo became the first Michigan Statecoach to earn Associated Press NationalCoach of the Year honors while leadingMSU to a 22-8 record and a share of theBig Ten title. The Spartans posted a 13-3mark in conference, earning Izzo Big TenConference Coach of the Year honors.

Over the course of the 1997-98 sea-son, Izzo and his team recorded six vic-tories over teams ranked in the top 25and finished the year ranked No. 10 na-tionally by USA Today/ESPN, markingthe first time the Spartans had finishedin the top 10 since 1995. In addition tohis AP award, Izzo was named NationalCoach of the Year by Basketball Newsand the United States Basketball Writ-ers Association (USBWA). BasketballTimes selected Izzo as its Mideast Coachof the Year.

In 1998, Izzo made his first appear-ance in the NCAA Tournament as a headcoach. The Spartans entered the tourna-ment as the No. 4 seed in the East Re-gion. In Hartford, Conn., Michigan Staterecorded victories over Eastern Michigan

HEAD COACH TOM IZZOand No. 8Princeton,advanc -ing to theSweet 16for thefirst times i n c e1990. Inthe EastRegionalsemifinalcontest ,MSU fell to No. 1 and eventual Final Fourparticipant North Carolina.

Over the past three seasons, Izzo hascompiled an impressive 87-20 (.813)record. A quick look at other stats fur-ther demonstrates the Spartans’ successover the past three years: 41-7 (.854) inthe Big Ten, 40-3 (.930) at the BreslinCenter, 26-13 (.667) against Top 25teams, 18-3 (.857) in postseason playand 12-2 (.857) in the NCAA Tournament. In addition, MSU has spent the past 44weeks ranked in the Associated PressTop 25, including 37 straight in the top15.

In 1996-97, Izzo guided the Greenand White cagers to an overall markof 17-12 including a Big Ten ledgerof 9-9, good for a sixth-place tie. With one of the youngest startinglineups in the Big Ten, Izzo guidedthe Spartans to their ninth-straighttrip to postseason play and second-straight NIT appearance, where theyadvanced to the second round. In-cluded in Izzo’s winswere triumphs overNCAA teams Indiana,Wisconsin (twice) andIowa. During the sum-mer of 1997, Izzocoached the Big Ten All-Star Team in a six-gametour of Europe.

During Izzo’s firstseason as head coachin 1995-96, he directedthe Green and White toan overall slate of 16-16including a 9-9 effort inthe Big Ten. Despite fac-ing the unenviable task

of replacing perhaps the country’s bestbackcourt from the 1994-95 season inShawn Respert and Eric Snow, Izzo re-corded wins over top 25 teams on fouroccasions while leading the program toits eighth-straight postseason appear-ance, a berth in the NIT, where the Spar-tans advanced to the second round. Therookie mentor saw his team rank No. 26in the nation in scoring defense (64.2 ppg)and No. 12 in rebound margin (+7.2).

Now entering his 18th season as amember of the Michigan State coachingstaff, Izzo has been with the Spartan pro-gram since taking a part-time assistantcoaching position in 1983. An assistantcoach with the Spartans from 1983-86,Izzo left MSU in May of 1986 to becomethe top assistant and recruiting coordi-nator at Tulsa. But, on June 10 of thesame year, Izzo returned to East Lan-sing when Spartan assistant Mike Deaneleft to become head coach at Siena Col-lege.
