ABOUT BNCCI

The Bengal National Chamber of Commerce & Industry, one of the Oldest National Chambers of the country, was established on 2nd February, 1887. It has been pioneer in championing the cause of

indigenous industries since the pre-independence days. The Chamber has an immaculate record of service to the business community of West Bengal in particular and India in general spanning over a century.

HIGHLIGHTS OF ACTIVITIES 2018-19

PresIdeNT's MessAgeI took over the Presidentship of this historic Chamber of Commerce a year ago with an objective to carry forward the legacy laid down by my predecessors.

Serving as the President of BNCCI has been no doubt a challenging job. Whatever little I could do was possible, only due to the support and cooperation received from my Executive Committee members and the Secretariat.

I started the year with the prime focus on making the Chamber more visible and vibrant. I am delighted to share with you that during the last one year the

Chamber has laid milestones. A delegation visited Moscow, St. Pittsburgh to explore investment and tourism opportunities. I led a fourteen member BNCCI delegation at Kunming, China and a delegation to interact with the GTA Secretariat in North Bengal. A Global Tourism Summit, an Education & Skill Conclave, a B2B Trade Meet with the Thai Embassy, launch of 132nd year commemorative postal stamp and envelope, visit of the Governor of West Bengal to the Chamber were some of the highlights of the period under my review.

The 31st Industrial India Trade Fair was a resounding success. During the Trade Fair for the first time Technological and Educational seminars were organised along with competition of start-ups and innovative projects and a hackathon – where students from different institutions and start-ups participated.

To be precise the year has been very exciting. We have been fortunate to have Hon’ble Ministers, Secretaries and high officials from both the Central and State Governments, foreign diplomats, industrialists and experts from various other fields to address our members.

I am confident that the Chamber will be in the able hands of my successors who would be the torchbearers of the future.Thank youSatyam RoychowdhuryPresident

A Journey of 132 YearsBNCCI Celebrates 132nd Foundation day

An event was held at the Chamber premises celebrating the 132 years of Bengal National Chamber of Commerce & Industry. The event was graced by the presence of Keshari Nath Tripathi, Governor, Government of West Bengal.

To mark the event, Gautam Bhattacharya, Chief Post Master General of West Bengal, Sikkim and Andaman & Nicobar Islands, Ministry of Communications, Government of India, launched a commemorative postal envelope and stamp at the celebration.

Shri Satyam Roychowdhury, President of BNCCI, in his address emphasised that the journey for BNCCI, which was established on February 2, 1887, has been monumental and carries vast historical importance. And, this phenomenal journey was only possible because of the leaders of yesteryears whose contributions and vision have tremendously impacted the growth of business in the state.

Bengal National Chamber of Commerce & Industry, all along has been a Mecca for enterprises belonging to the MSME segment. Many startups and enterprises have gained out of business transactions, government

and citizen linkages and have developed through our very own Enterprise Development Institute.

Over the years, there have been few industrial revolutions and change in the techno-commercial arena and BNCCI has very successfully adapted such transformations guiding its members to cope with the changes.

Hon'ble Governor advised members of BNCCI to take more responsibilities of framing the future roadmap of Bengal's industrial scenario and create more opportunities for our multitalented manpower of Bengal.

To commemorate this special day Chamber felicitated five centenary old institute of repute: St. Xavier's College, Presidency College, Calcutta University, Scottish Church College and East Bengal Club side by side five veteran members were also honoured in this auspicious day Dr. S.C. Nandy, Shri Balaram Kundu, Shri Prafulla Khumar Ghosh, Shri R.P. Srivastava, Shri Amiya Das.

“While Kunming, the capital of Yunnan province, is called the City of Eternal Spring, Kolkata is called the City of Joy. Ties between West Bengal and Kunming, one of the most beautiful cities of China, which share historical links, need to be strengthened and enhanced”. Shri Roychowdhury also called for government-appointed intermediaries, who speak foreign languages at the airports in Kunming and Kolkata, to familiarise investors with local rules, and also to facilitate their work.

BNCCI recommends setting up a Chinese regulatory office in Bengal for eastern India with support from the Chinese Consulate in Kolkata for direct inspection and faster approvals. Just as China’s picturesque Kunming city offers a host of scenic spots, many locations in Bengal such as Darjeeling, forests in north Bengal, the Sunderbans, Digha and Mondarmoni. Greater efforts need to be made towards enhancing people-to-people exchanges between Kunming and India through co-hosting cultural events and education exchanges, including yoga.

Kolkata-Kunming or K2K brand needs to be promoted through all official and other channels. The Yunnan Deputy Governor, Mr. Wang, stressed the need for joint efforts to promote Darjeeling tea and advocate collaborations between the two countries in the agricultural sector, appreciated all the points made by Shri Roychowdhury. “Open economy aided by a mindset of openness will bring about all-round growth and development in the two regions,” Mr. Wang told the BNCCI delegation. “The provincial Government of Yunnan looks forward to working

more closely with West Bengal,” he said, adding that BNCCI can play the role of a bridge builder.
