PRESIDENT BOB HEIBULT
Thank you for the opportunity to serve as your Board President. I look forward to working with everyone to make AGC an active advocate for the construction industry. Our biggest challenge, not only in South Dakota, but across the nation is workforce development. AGC has numerous programs in place to help solve this problem. We’re working with the vocational schools to promote interest in the construction industry and convince the students that construction work is a rewarding occupation. The AGC safety program continues to a very popular benefit offered to our members and the construction industry in general. I encourage everyone to get involved in some way with AGC and help support the construction industry. I believe that as members of the construction industry, it’s our obligation to give back to our industry and encourage others to join us.
ABOUT BOBBob serves as Manager of the Building Division for Gustafson Builders in Rapid City. He has been an active member of AGC for over 20 years serving on the Building Chapter Board of Directors for almost 10 years total. Bob is an active member of the South Dakota Engineering Society.

SAFETYA total of 120 paid Safety Training courses were conducted in 2017 by our Safety Team, with a total of 1,596 individuals trained. This number does not include the countless member service visits and site visits conducted across the state. Site visits allow our Safety Team to provide an extra eye on-site and work with you if any safety changes are recommended. Site visits are a member benefit and free to all AGC members! We have access to a wealth of resources available to assist our members
in developing specialized safety services through the AGC of America, other
AGC chapters, and a variety of Safety Directors, managers and consultants
located throughout the United States. These services may include
developing or coordinating the development of specialized safety, health and
environmental training programs, arranging consultation, on-site engineering
and/or design and medical services.
AGC WORKFORCE DEVELOPMENTWorkforce development has been a leading focus for AGC members and others in the local construction industry for quite some time. The following is a list of initiative AGC accomplished for 2017.
• The creation of Pizza, Pop & Power Tools launched which was an event targeted at getting middle school aged girls interested in the Construction industry. 70 girls attended this year and a goal of 125 attendees was established for next year.
• The Build South Dakota website was updated to truly be the go to for anybody interested in getting involved with AGC of SD or interested in starting a career in construction. This site is a huge resource for parents, teachers, students and anyone that is interested in construction. Be sure to check it out periodically as there are always updates on AGC of SD workforce development efforts.
• In addition to the updated website a local Marketing firm was employed to help promote the many benefits a career in construction can provide. In the coming months materials that will show the pathways in to the industry and the Building Chapter endowments will be available. These materials will also direct students and parents to the Build South Dakota website where they will find a more interactive and informative pathway into the industry. The materials and a professional presentation prepared for any member that may want to visit a school or help promote the industry on their own will be available to all members.
• Two new State Registered Apprenticeships in addition to the successful Carpentry program were created. These two new apprenticeships are in Concrete Finishing and Heavy Equipment Operation. Please be on the look out for more information on how you can become involved with these apprenticeships and the benefits available to your business.
• A booklet to promote these Registered Apprenticeships to members and future Apprentices was developed. This booklet will provide helpful information for both members and potential employees of the many benefits an Apprenticeship program can provide.
• This year’s Construction Awareness Day’s first event was held at the CTE Academy in Sioux Falls and went off extremely well. The weather was great and we had an awesome turn out of AGC members getting together to help spread a positive message about the construction industry. The students that attended this year’s events were exposed to many different construction careers including Concrete Finishing, Heavy Equipment Operation and Surveying just to name a few. Following the Sioux Falls Construction Awareness Day, events were held at T.F. Riggs High School in Pierre and Western Dakota Tech in Rapid City. Again we were blessed with great weather and had 130 students and 170 students respectively. The last Construction Awareness Day was at Mitchell Techical Institute in Mitchell and was attended by 120 students. Construction Awareness Day continues to be the most successful outreach effort and continues to grow.

A KEY COMPONENT FOR ANY BUSINESSAGC of South Dakota Building Chapter works hard to sustain the construction industry in South Dakota by promoting the industry through community-based programs.
CARPENTRY APPRENTICESHIP PROGRAMThe AGC Building Chapter’s Carpentry Apprenticeship Program has been deemed a win-win program for all parties involved. Over the years the program has seen a steady growth both in number of enrollees and participating AGC contractor members. In 2016-17 the program had a total of 69 apprentices and 13 contractor sponsors from throughout the state. To successfully complete the program and attain journeyman status, students must document a total of 8,000 work hours in addition to 576 related instruction hours within a four-year period. Classes are currently offered in Brookings, Sioux Falls, and Rapid City. Programs can be offered at any location in the state with a minimum of six apprentice applicants.
ANNUAL SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAMThe primary purpose of this scholarship program is to promote the construction industry and to encourage young people to choose the construction industry as their lifelong career. All scholarships will be awarded from AGC Endowments started by AGC at all of the higher learning institutions in South Dakota that offer construction related programs. The AGC of South Dakota Building Chapter will continue to fund additional scholarships annually at the different institutions.
