Mountain Climbing by Motor Car.

Messrs J Kniep and T Macmillan of Brisbane made a

trip up to the top of the Tamborine Mountain last

weekend in Mr Kniep's 5 h.p. Oldsmobile motor car.

Brisbane was left about 3.30 pm and the top of the

mountain was reached about 5 pm. The feat is

somewhat remarkable as in many places, the gradient is

1 in 6, and the steepest gradient about 1 in 3. The

downward journey which was perhaps even more risky

than the hill climbing owing to the slippery nature of

the ground on account of the rain was safely

accomplished by means of brakes consisting of two

stout saplings tied on the rear axle. This is the first time

that Tambourine Mountain has been ascended by a

motor car.

Ladies Auxiliary Report March 2017

Hi all, another month has flown past and I hope

life has been kind to you and your families.

QVVA finished February off in style with

breakfast at Lota. A small but keen group met

at the foreshore for an early bite to eat, some

bbq’d and others came ready to go. Some ate

light and some had a smorgasbord of breakfast

delight. But the things we all cared were the

lovely morning breeze, good company and a lot

of leisurely catching up. Whilst we didn’t have

any of the grandkids to amuse us, Simon and

Kathy bought there fur babies along, both were on their best behaviour. After a coffee or two we headed

home mid-morning. Baz needed some supplies so we stopped off at Cannon Hill and managed to kill two

bird with one stone (Supercheap & Bunnings).

Last weekend was scheduled for the ‘Mt Tamborine

Show’ and Bazza’s Caboolture Run. It proved to be

one of those weekends when everyone had

somewhere else to be (including me). So Bazza’s

Run was postponed for another time, lucky as the

weather Sunday certainly wasn’t the best for being

on the road. I’m sure even though Saturday was a

long day, it was enjoyed by all who were able to

make it, with John and Allison Day’s 1903

Oldsmobile bringing history to life.

Ladies we will have a short meeting this month after the general meeting.

And as last Friday was St Patrick’s Day, I’m sending all

an Irish blessing and my best wishes for all the luck

you can carry in your pocket.

May your pocket be deep!

Cheers

Susie

Extract taken from a book written by Bernard O’Reilly – Cullenbenbong He is writing about his early life in NSW at Kanimbla - Too soon a little prosperity came to the valley and the sulkies which were the first expression of it hastened the destruction of one of the happiest features of the valley life. So it was in many other quiet valleys. Later still came the motor car, a cold nasty thing which took all the comradeship from the road, and made every fellow traveller a nuisance or a potential enemy. The cruellest thing in our age is misunderstanding, but who could know and understand each other better than those who have jogged together (on horseback) by the hour along a bushland road in heat or cold, in Spring or Autumn, in happy times or adversity.

Sunday 26th February Breakfast at Lota

A beautiful day dawned and Lota Beach under the gazebo was just perfect.

With the B B Q fired up breakfast was cooked and eaten while watching the tide come in.

It was good to see the following members enjoying the great outdoors:-

Simon & Kathy – 1928 Plymouth Tourer & 2000 Jaguar, Gary & Kathy – 1929 Dodge Roadster, Col – 1930

Buick Tourer, John & Ruth – 1930 Chrysler Sedan,

Baz & Susie – 1960 Morris Major, Nev & Joan – 1963 Ford Falcon Convertible,

John Buchanan – 1977 Datsun 260 Z

Friday 3rd March Breakfast

Nev & Joan attended the breakfast at Carport Cafe and enjoyed their meal.

Nev has suggested that we change the day of the breakfast to coincide with the mid-week rally that The

Bayside Restorers Club run, so that our members have the option of continuing on in their old car to the

rally.

We’ll try that for April 20th – Thursday. Still at the Carport Cafe, Cannon Hill for breakfast and then either

onto Cleveland Showgrounds for 9.30am or meet up at Rocks Riverside Park Seventeen Mile Rocks, UBD

198, E3 for 10am and morning tea.

Tuesday 7th March Dinner

Rob & Beth, Nev & Joan, Simon & Kathy, Ross & Wendy, Paul, John & Ruth attended the Carina Leagues

Club for a lovely meal and some trivia. Again we weren’t in the running for a prize, but I think we are

improving. A good night of fun & fellowship was had by all.

Wednesday 8th March Buranda School

We were again invited by Buranda State School to display cars and give the young students an insight into

bygone years.

John Day gave an excellent talk to the group of year one & two children and then they all had a closer

look at the cars.

Thanks to John Day– 1903 Oldsmobile, Brian Simpson – 1927 T Ford, Paul Caro– 1929 Armstrong Siddeley,

Col Hinxman– 1930 Buick, John Knight – 1962 Dodge Lancer. Unfortunately Simon’s car refused to attend

even though he was keen to display her.

ART DECO WEEK IN NAPIER NZ

By Clint Frater

15th - 19th February 2017

Once again we were back in New Zealand for the Art Deco Festival that is put on in Napier each year. It includes over 250 events, hundreds of 1920s and 30s cars, railcar rides, great Gatsby picnics, dinner dance extravaganzas and free outdoor concerts to name a few. There are more and more events that you can participate in if you wish. Napier was devastated by a huge 7.8 Earthquake back in February 1931 and when they rebuilt the city many of the buildings were done in the Art Deco style. Napier is now known as the Art Deco Capital of the world.

There is normally several flying displays held with a promise this year that they were going to have a Spitfire, Kitty Hawk and a Mustang along with the air force aerobatic team. These were all called off due to the low cloud and rain, Pity.

During the celebrations they hold a car parade through the main street with a limit of 250 pre 1945 vehicles. This year the car parade was dedicated to the Rolls Royce Silver Ghost. Several of these fine cars were on display. There were also over 30 Bentleys and some Lagonda’s on display. Many of these cars were owned by Ross Cook who brought them out from the UK.

The car parade is organised by both the Vintage Car Club and the Art Deco Society. Along with a couple of my friends we went out to the Vintage Car Club Grounds to view the cars on display before they left to go on a run through Hastings [twin city that is about 20 Kms away from Napier] before returning to Napier to join the other cars in the parade.

The weather was not the best with showers but this did not stop the enthusiasm of the car owners or passengers. There was also a gathering of MGs and several of these left to go in the parade as well.

It is not often that you can see so many classic vehicles of many different makes in one place. Even the rain drops on the paint or nickel just made them look real. Bentleys, Lagondas, Rolls Royce, Cord, Bugatti, Auburns, SS Jaguar and many more common makes including Model A Fords and Austin 7s.

The car parade was due to start at 12-30 pm. It was 12-15 pm when the Navy Band started to play and as the first few notes started, the heavens opened up with a heavy down pour. The band players never missed a note. Many cars were open top and they stayed this way. Drivers and passengers dressed up in art deco clothing holding umbrellas atop as the parade progressed. This was the first time that they had had rain during the parade in 25 years.

I am sure there were more than 250 vehicles as it took ages to get all the cars going but we only saw one that refused to start because of dampness [A Lagonda].

After the parade the cars normally park for the public to view up close along the marine parade but with the rain and a strong cold wind blowing many parked in the closed off streets. A lot also went home. As with previous Art Deco parades the city was a buzz with people with many dressed in Art Deco wear. Bands and dancing continued in the streets and performances were held at the sound shell.

On Sunday the weather was still showery but looked a bit brighter. All the events that were planned were still held. The main event for the day was the Gatsby Picnic and this was held in the main street under the shop verandas. The weather cleared by about 11.00 am to become a beautiful sunny afternoon. The crowds again came out for the entertainment and to participate in the Gatsby picnic.

If anyone is interested in going to this event next year it is being held on the 14th - 18th February 2018. Perhaps a cruise ship tour that stops in Napier on the Saturday 16th. Check times that the ship is in port. I would suggest you book your accommodation early as it is a very busy time for the area.

Normally these areas are packed with cars and people. The weather in the morning was terrible but the

sun did come out to make it a very nice afternoon.

Windows vs Ford

For all of us who feel only the deepest love and affection for the way computers have enhanced our lives,

read on.

At a recent computer expo (COMDEX),Bill Gates

reportedly compared the computer industry with the auto industry and stated,

"If Ford had kept up with technology like the computer industry has, we would all be driving $25 cars that

got 1,000 miles to the gallon."

In response to Bill 's comments, Ford issued a press release stating:

If Ford had developed technology like Microsoft, we would all be driving cars with the following

characteristics (and I just love this part):

1. For no reason whatsoever, your car would crash.........twice a day.

2.. Every time they repainted the lines in the road, you would have to buy a new car.

3... Occasionally your car would die on the freeway for no reason. You would have to pull to the side of

the road, close all of the windows, shut off the car, restart it, and reopen the windows before you could

continue. For some reason you would simply accept this.

4.... Occasionally, executing a manoeuvre such as a left turn would cause your car to shut down and refuse

to restart, in which case you would have to reinstall the engine.

5..... Macintosh would make a car that was powered by the sun, was reliable, five times as fast and twice

as easy to drive - but would run on only five percent of the roads.

6...... The oil, water temperature, and alternator warning lights would all be replaced by a single "This Car

Has Performed An Illegal Operation" warning light.

7....... The airbag system would ask,"Are you sure?" before deploying.

8........ Occasionally, for no reason whatsoever, your car would lock you out and refuse to let you in until

you simultaneously lifted the door handle, turned the key and grabbed hold of the radio antenna.

9......... Every time a new car was introduced car buyers would have to learn how to drive all over again

because none of the controls would operate in the same manner as the old car.

10.......... You'd have to press the "Start" button to turn the engine off.

PS - I'd like to add that when all else fails, you could call "customer service" in some foreign country and

be instructed in some foreign language how to fix your car yourself!

NO NURSING HOME FOR ME!!!

No nursing home for us. We'll be checking into a Holiday Inn!

With the average cost for a nursing home care costing $188.00 per day, there is a better way when we get old and too feeble. I've already checked on reservations at the Holiday Inn.

For a combined long term stay discount and senior discount, it's $59.23 per night. Breakfast is included, and some have happy hours in the afternoon. That leaves $128.77 a day for lunch and dinner in any restaurant we want, or room service, laundry, gratuities and special TV movies. Plus, they provide a spa, swimming pool, a workout room, a lounge and washer-dryer, etc. Most have free toothpaste and razors, and all have free shampoo and soap.

$5 worth of tips a day you'll have the entire staff scrambling to help you. They treat you like a customer, not a patient. There's a city bus stop out front, and seniors ride free. The handicap bus will also pick you up (if you fake a decent limp).

To meet other nice people, call a church bus on Sundays.

For a change of scenery, take the airport shuttle bus and eat at one of the nice restaurants there. While you're at the airport, fly somewhere. Otherwise, the cash keeps building up. It takes months to get into decent nursing homes. Holiday Inn will take your reservation today. And you're not stuck in one place forever -- you can move from Inn to Inn, or even from city to city. Want to see Hawaii ? They have Holiday Inn there too. TV broken? Light bulbs need changing? Need a mattress replaced? No problem.. They fix everything, and apologize for the inconvenience.

The Inn has a night security person and daily room service. The maid checks to see if you are ok. If not, they'll call an ambulance . . . Or the undertaker. If you fall and break a hip, Medicare will pay for the hip, and Holiday Inn will upgrade you to a suite for the rest of your life.

And no worries about visits from family. They will always be glad to find you, and probably check in for a few days mini-vacation.

The grandkids can use the pool. What more could I ask for?

So, when I reach that golden age, I'll face it with a grin.
