inspiring each other and chatting. The group enjoys

occasional outings together to local scenic areas.

They take photos and try to recreate what they see on

canvas. Bring your own art supplies. Beginners and

everyone with an artistic flair are welcome. The Gallery

Wall in the rec center displays our community

Stoneybrook’s St. Patrick’s Pot Luck was held on Friday, March 8th. An intimate group of about 30 arrived in a variety of shades of green. Irish music was playing in the background for friends and neighbors to listen to as they conversed and caught-up with one another. A 50/50 was held and the “pot o’ gold” was won by one “lucky” resident. Other prizes were given as well. The committee of Al and Diana Padilla, Norah Prior, our M.C., and Marc and Karen Koch would like to thank all those who attended.

FOOD DRIVE ! COLLECTION BOX WILL BE IN THE REC CENTER LOBBY UNTIL 3/31/19

Hi! My name is Bryce, and I am a fourth grader at Freedom Elementary. I am also a member of the National Elementary Honor Society. Each year I participate in a community service project.

This year I am doing a food drive between now and March 31, 2019. Please donate any canned or any nonperishable food items you can spare to help families in need! The food that is collected will be given to The Food Bank of Manatee County. Please help me make this a huge success by dropping off items in the box located at the Stoneybrook Rec Center! Thank you!

All ponds are not alike. We have both natural and man-made ponds in our community. Both

types are important. Their purpose is to capture rainwater as it moves over the ground reducing erosion

and flooding into our drainage ditches and ultimately into the Manatee River. There are different types

of man-made ponds depending on their purpose. Both are needed because we have covered over

natural drainage by building our houses, roadways and changing the contour of the land during the

development of the community. The man-made ones are our storm water ponds. They serve two main

functions. They are designed to decrease downstream flooding and remove pollutants from the water

before it enters the aquifer, the ground to the water table, to a lake or a river from our community.

We don’t normally think about the water run-off into the sewage system. It just goes away

    somewhere. But where does it go and what does it contain? It is a cocktail of sediment accumulation;

excess pesticides from our yards and decaying vegetation, unpicked up dog litter, (especially when it

is left in plastic bags on the pavement or thrown in the ponds themselves) oil and gas by-products

from auto exhaust, litter from cans and other trash along the road side and any other solvents that

have fallen on the road way. Collecting the trash litter from our culverts, ditches and ponds is a costly

process and adds to our maintenance costs. So please don’t throw trash on the roads or in the

    gutters.

How can you tell what kind of a pond is by your house? The easiest way is to look at the outlet

structure (usually made of concrete) where water flows out of the pond after it rains. Systems known as

“borrow pits” have no outfall structure, however, they might have a structure to maintain a certain water

    level.

“Wet ponds” have what looks like a box with a “V” cut in it called a “bleed down notch”. The

entire pond has a flat bottom and is used for water retention. Their purpose is to serve as a recharged

water supply. They are connected throughout Stoneybrook, and indirectly are the source for the water

used in your sprinkling system. There might be a limited amount of vegetation around the perimeter of

    the pond.

The second type has a shallow shelf for planting around the pond called a “littoral zone”.

The plants’ purpose is to absorb nutrients and pollutants to improve water quality. The second purpose

is to stabilize the steep side slopes. The plants used are all native wetland plants, selected for their ability

to work in harmony with each other by extracting specific nutrients. The waste product from one specie

becomes the raw ingredients needed by another, thereby producing a balanced ecological system

where nothing is wasted. As the littoral zone matures the new emerging plants provide a safe-haven

and food source for fish and other aquatic life. Our ponds are well enough developed that they are

now attracting wading birds to build nests because there is protection from predators. The C.D.D. is

responsible for all pond maintenance and management.
