Dear Friends,

Last week I was blessed to be able to “sit in” for St. Nick at the annual Breakfast with St. Nick event. What a joyful time, even if there were a few tears from a couple of youngsters who weren’t so sure about having their pictures taken with the bearded one.

The children’s joy, expectation and their excitement captures what our season is about, and, in a very particular way, what our day is about today.

Today is “Gaudate Sunday,” the 3rd weekend during our Advent Season, that calls for rejoicing as the Lord is near and our time waiting is drawing close. Our vestments shift from purple to rose to demonstrate that joy.

This Sunday also highlights the contrast many experience today and during our Christmas time, when joy is not their life experience. Last week as I was visiting with a family before a funeral, one person said how hard this loss was especially at this time of year. We know that is true. For many it seems like a slap in the face when the expectation is to rejoice while their feeling of sadness, grief or loneliness is what dominates. Our hearts go out to you.

If we can’t rejoice, I think we can find some consolation in the fact that the Lord is walking with us at this time. We hear in the Beatitudes that Jesus tells us “Blessed are they who mourn, for they will be comforted.” That comfort is experienced in a very real way through each of us as members of the Body of Christ. When someone hurts, as a member of One Body, we all hurt. Also, when we walk with and console another, it is the Lord who consoles through us. And, when we are hurting and hugged by someone who consoles us, it is the Lord who is hugging us. That is especially important this time of year.

One day we will welcome the Lord, not just at Christmas, but meeting Him at the end of our lives. That is the central rejoicing we do today. We can welcome the Lord now, too, as we walk with the Lord and come into His presence in prayer and the Sacraments and through one another as members of His Body. In all of this, we can still experience God’s love, that will help us enter into God’s joy.

May today’s experience of Gaudate Sunday help us to know God’s love and joy in our lives. May we all radiate that love and joy through our lives.

God Bless,

Fr. Tom

Fathers TeamCome to Fathers Team on Friday, Dec 20th, at the IHM Welcome Center (2d Floor on the South End of the Bldg) when Fathers Team Lite, facilitated by Bob Considine, will be in session to engage you in helpful discussions about the Dec 22nd Gospel and other Readings in that Mass. You will gain new insights on those Scriptural Readings that you will hear that Sunday. We guarantee that you will enjoy this discussion to apply the Gospel to our lives.

Ushers, and Greeters, and Christmas—Oh My!With Christmas Masses quickly approaching, we will need extra help for Ushers and Greeters. If you or your family would like to temporarily help this ministry, your service would be greatly appreciated. This might also be a great opportunity for families to work together to help with greeting all of the many people that will visit IHM on Christmas. Many people only attend Mass on this holiday, so we need to do our best to warmly greet them and serve them as they enter our church.

If you are interested in helping our parish during a Christmas Mass, please contact Steve Frazer at [email protected], or sign up in the minister’s sacristy.

Transforming Jail Ministry Cookies NeededOur volunteer chaplains deliver more than 1,200 dozen of homemade goodness to all the jail facilities in Hamilton County, Ohio on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. Each incarcerated person receives a bag of cookies and assurance that someone is thinking about and praying for them over the holidays. A similar thing is done for Corrections Officers a few days earlier.

Our IHM prison ministry team asks for your help by baking cookies. If possible, decorate the cookies to be festive-looking! Please pray while baking for the incarcerated and corrections officers. Examples:

1. Sugar cookies with sprinkles, decorated cut sugar cookies, colored M&Ms

2. Oatmeal with raisins or craisins, or any regular sized cookie

Regular size is approximately 2-3”, so that 6 cookies fit comfortably in a sandwich bag. Uniformity is desired so that everyone feels the same amount of appreciation. In other words, please avoid baking any cookies that could create jealousy between inmates (candy, fudge, etc.). Allow cookies to cool and dry completely before delivering. Tins and containers cannot be stored or returned (please do not send us valuable containers you would like to receive back)

Drop Off at the IHM Welcome Center Friday December 20, by 12 noon.
